2002 CFOD PLAYOFFS PREVIEW California Coneheads (100-62, Ruth division winners) vs. Park City Climbers (85-77, 4-2 winners over Piazza's in round 0) After clawing their way up the standings in September, the Park City Climbers ended their season in a dead heat against the San Francisco Piazza's. In a special round 0 series, the Climbers defeated the Piazza's in 6 games to officially enter the playoffs as the #2 league wildcard. Their round 0 series featured a variety of pitcher duels, which has resulted in a 1.86 playoff team ERA. Pedro Martinez is 2-0 with no earned runs in 14 innings, while Mark Prior is 1-0 with a 0.61 ERA in 14 2/3 innings. Mariano Rivera and Alan Embree each have a save with a 0.00 ERA. In 18 at bats, Gene Kingsale has a homer and 4 RBI, while Jeff Cirillo is hitting .429 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Slugger Jom Thome has 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. The meeting against the Coneheads is a reunion of sorts for several Climber players. Last season, Randy Johnson was the ace on the staff, Mariano Rivera was their closer, and Jim Thome was their ace hitter. What else can be said about the California Coneheads that hasn't been said already? After trading Johnson to the Termites in the offseason for Larry Walker (who hit .289 with 89 runs and 95 RBI), they filled his gap in the rotation with Matt Clement, who went 19-9 with a 2.86 ERA. Tim Hudson put in a Cy Young worthy season, going 20-6 with a 2.71 ERA. With Mariano Rivera and Keith Foulke lost to the draft, the Coneheads relied on a bullpen by committee approach, and had 5 different relievers save a total of 28 games, each with an ERA of 3.00 or below. Without Thome, the Coneheads didn't skip a beat at the plate. Mike Piazza continued his all-CFOD ways at catcher, hitting 33 homers with a .551 slugging average and 117 RBI's. 3B Scott Rolen had 33 homers as well, scoring 101 runs and drove in 112. In mid-season the Coneheads made a blockbuster deal for 2000 MVP Jason Giambi and Mark Bellhorn. Giambi hit .282 with a .454 on base average, a .481 slugging average, and 59 runs scored for California, and ended the season with a combined .296 average, 37 homers, 118 runs scored and 90 RBI. Bellhorn finished with a combined 94 runs scored and 85 RBI, with a .371 on base average and .491 slugging average. California won the season series 5 games to 4, and have home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Climbers (Martinez) at Coneheads (Clement). Today's opening round one game could only be described as epic. Park City's first opportunity to score came in the third inning. Craig Counsell singled. Matt Lawton doubled, and Counsell went for home. The throw went home, Counsell dived head first, Piazza blocked the plate and made the tag. No runners scored, the game was still 0-0. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Durazo singled and Jason Giambi walked to put 2 runners on for Mike Piazza. And just like that, the game changed. Piazza took Martinez deep to put 3 runs on the board for the Coneheads. 3-0 Coneheads after 3. The Climbers second opportunity to put runs on the board was in the bottom of the 5th. With 1 out, Pedro Martinez reached first on an error. Craig Counsell hit a hard line drive off the glove of 2B Orlando Hudson, allowing Martinez to go to 3rd with 1 out. Matt Lawton walked to load the bases and bring on Jim Thome to face Coneheads starter Matt Clement. Thome hit a grounder to Giambi, who threw home to get the run-saving out. 2 outs, and Jermaine Dye was at the plate. Not for long. Dye struck out to leave the bases loaded, and the Coneheads up by 3. Park City's next opportunity came in the 6th inning. Chris Woodward hit a 0 out double. Perry put the Climbers on the board with a single, driving in Woodward, and making it 3-1 Coneheads. Jason Varitek hit a double. Perry rounded 3rd to go home. The ball was thrown home, but went past Piazza. Perry scored to reduce California's lead to 1, and Varitek wound up at 3rd. Clement was done, and on came Chris Hammond with 0 outs in the inning and a runner on third. Darin Erstad became Hammond's first out with a strikeout. Pedro Martinez grounded out for out #2. Varitek couldn't advance. Counsell grounded out for the final out. Once again, runners were left in scoring position, but the game was now a 1-run contest. The game would go into the top of the 9th inning, with California leading 3 to 2. Octavio Dotel was on the mound to close it out. Jim Thome was issued a 0 out walk. Carlos Febles substituted for Thome on the base paths. Jermaine Dye singled. Orlando Cabrera bunted the runners over to 3rd & 2nd and put 1 out on the board. Just 2 more outs to go. Herbert Perry hit a slow rolling grounder to Rolen as Febles ran home. Rolen threw to defensive replacement catcher Tom Prince, but Febles was too fast. Park City scored, and the game was tied at 3. Runners were at 1st & 3rd, and Jason Varitek was the new batter. Base hit, and Park City took the 4-3 lead. Dotel threw a wild pitch, advancing the runners to 3rd & 2nd. Former Conehead Darin Erstad was at the plate, and got his 2nd hit of the night, a double that cleared the bases. After the smoke cleared, Park City had scored 4 times in the 9th to take a 6-3 lead. Reliever Scott Schoenweiss was the pitcher for Park City in the bottom of the 9th. A 3 run lead, and 3 outs to give Park City the upset win. First batter, Nick Johnson, flied out. Pinch hitter Julio Franco grounded out to first. 2 outs. It was now up to Mark Bellhorn to prolong the game, and prolong the game he did. Baseball over the wall, home run, and the game was now 6-4. Schoenweiss was removed in favor of Mariano Rivera. Rivera faced Tom Prince. Prince was no Piazza at the plate, popping out to short to end the game. Park City performs some 9th inning heroics to steal game one from the Coneheads, 6-4. The double-play combos for each team were very busy today. The teams combined for 7 double plays, 3 in the first two innings alone. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Prior issued a walk to Tim Hudson. Mark Bellhorn singled. A Durazo deep flyout would move Hudson to 3rd. Hudson later scored on a passwed ball. 1-0 California. In the 5th inning, Chris Woodward singled and moved to 2nd when Larry Walker misplayed the fly ball. Herbert Perry's uniform was grazed by a fastball and was subsequently awarded first base. Jason Varitek hit into one of those double plays, putting 2 outs on the board, but Woodward moved to 3rd. Darin Erstad tied up the game at 1 with a single. California took the lead in the bottom of the 5th, when Jason Giambi bashed a 2-run homer off a Mark Prior pitch. Prior threw 107 pitches, but lasted only 5 innings. 3-1 California after 5. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, Tim Hudson ran into control problems. Pinch hitter Eric Munson, Craig Counsell, and Matt Lawton all walked to load the bases, and brought Jim Thome to the plate. Counsell was the tying run, so a single would likely tie things up. But Hudson settled down, and Thome hit a groundout to end the inning. 3-1 California after 8. Hudson remained on the mound in the top of the 9th. The first batter, Jermaine Dye, walked. Hudson was replaced by Octavio Dotel. Chris Woodward grounded out, as did Herbert Perry to put 2 outs on the board. It was now up to Jason Varitek, representing the tying run. Varitek walked to put 2 on with 2 outs. The go-ahead run, Darin Erstad, was at the plate. Erstad drove in Park City's only run of the game, but that single run was all the Climbers would get for game two. Erstad popped out, ending the game. California wins the battle of the double plays, and ties up the series at 1 game apiece. Randy Johnson made just 1 appearance against his former team in the regular season. That just happened to be a 5-hit shutout. More on that later. In the bottom of the 1st, Wiki Gonzalez had an infield hit, and Jack Wilson doubled with no outs. A fielder's choice scored Gonzalez to make it 1-0 Climbers after 1. Johnson's game three performance was shaping up to be nothing short of awesome. Johnson was throwing a no-hitter through 7 innings. In the top of the 8th, with the game still 1-0 Park City, Johnson started the inning by hitting Jason Giambi with a fastball. With a runner at first, Mike Piazza broke up the no-hitter, hitting a double to move Giambi to 3rd with 0 outs. Juan Gonzalez hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Giambi to tie it up at 1. Larry Walker was issued a walk. Pinch hitter JT Snow hit a key double (California's 2nd hit of the game), driving in 2 runs to give California a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, with runners at first and third, Jason Varitek hit a sacrifice fly to narrow the lead to 3-2. Scot Shields was on the mound for California in the bottom of the 9th with a 1 run lead. Jim Thome hit a leadoff single, and was replaced on the basepaths by pinch runner Chris Woodward. Pinch hitter Gene Kingsale singled to put runners at first and 2nd, 0 outs. Craig Wilson hit a deep flyout, allowing Woodward to advance to 3rd, with only one out. Unfortunately for Park City, Sheilds was quick with the pickoff throws, and caught Woodward leaning the wrong way while Preston Wilson was batting. Out at third, 2 outs in the game. Wilson grounded out to end the game. California was amazingly efficient, manufacturing 3 runs on just 2 hits (and left just 1 batter on base) to edge Park City 3-2. The Climbers jumped out to the early lead, with an Erstad RBI single in the 2nd and a 2-run shot by Chris Woodward in the 3rd to make it 3-0 Park City. California closed the gap in the 4th on RBI singles by Larry Walker and Nick Johnson. Park City got into a jam in the 6th inning, loading the bases with California sluggers. The Coneheads made the most of the opportunity, with Nick Johnson tying the game up with a bases loaded walk. Freddy Garcia gave the Coneheads the lead with a 2-run single. A wild pitch scored another. Mark Bellhorn hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3 after a 5-run 6th inning. The Coneheads added 2 more in the 9th to put the game well out of reach. California wins game 4 by a score of 9-3, and are 1 game away from advancing to the RY conference finals. The Climber's season was in danger of ending, being down 3 games to 1, but they'd have Pedro Martinez on the mound for game 5. Unfortuantely for Pedro, he got into trouble early. With 2 on and 2 outs in the 1st inning, Larry Walker took Martinez deep. 3 run homer, California up 3-0. After a wild first, Martinez settled down and was putting 0's in the runs allowed column. So was California's Matt Clement. In the 8th inning, with the score still 3-0 and Scott Schoenweis on the mound, Jason Giambi smacked a solo shot. Scott Rolen hit a single with 2 on, scoring another run to make it 5-0. In the bottom of the 8th, Darin Erstad hit a 0 out triple, and scored on a groundout by Craig Counsell. 5-1 California after 8. Matt Clement remained on the mound in the bottom of the 9th, just 3 outs away from advancing the Coneheads to the RY conference finals. First batter up, Jim Thome, ground out. As did Jermaine Dye. 1 more out, and the batter at the plate was Chris Woodward. Single. Clement was pulled in favor of reliever Chris Hammond to face Herbert Perry. Perry hit a grounder to Orlando Hudson, who threw to first for the final out. California wins game 5 by a score of 5-1, win the round 1 series 4 games to 1, and advance to the RY conference finals.
