2002 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW MANTLE-KOUFAX CONFERENCE FINALS Angry Candy (99-63, Mantle pennant winner, 4-0 over Brewins in Rd 1) vs Cincinnati Rock (96-66, Koufax pennant winner, 4-1 over Shriners in Rd 1) Both teams are no strangers to going deep in the playoffs. In the past three years, the world series representative for the MK conference has either been the Rock (1999, winners in 2000) or the Angry Candy (2001). the two teams even met in the first round last year, when the Candy defeated the Rock in 5 games. The Angry Candy swept the Boston Brewins in their opening round 1 series. Bobby Abreu is hitting .385 with 4 runs scored, Todd Helton is slugging .563 with 3 RBI's, and Chipper Jones is slugging .500 with 5 runs scored. Mike Maroth pitched 7 shutout innings for his win, while Omar Daal pitched a complete game, giving up just 1 earned run. In 2 games, John Smoltz has a 0.00 ERA with a win and a save. The Cincinnati Rock bested the San Francisco Shriners in 5 games in their round 1 series. Ace Curt Schilling is in top form, throwing 16 innings, giving up only 1 earned run for a 0.56 ERA. Roy Oswalt is 1-0 in his only start with a 1.23 ERA. 3B Joe Randa has been hot so far, hitting .429 with 4 runs scored and 7 RBI. 2B Junior Spivey is hitting .389 with 7 runs scored. Catcher Jorge Posada is slugging .625 with 5 RBI's. Cincinnati won the season series 5 games to 4, but the Angry Candy have home field advantage due to their better overall regular season record. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Rock (Schilling) at Angry Candy (Ohka). Fielding, schmielding, as long as they can hit, you say? Well, that may come under closer scrutiny after a game like this. In the bottom of the 1st inning, leadoff batter Todd Walker hit a deep fly ball to Jeremy Giambi .. who dropped it. Walker reached on error. That could come back to bite Cincinnati. Hard. Curt Schilling got into further trouble, loading the bases with 2 outs. Torii Hunter singled, scoring two runs, giving the Angry Candy a 2-0 lead. Jose Valentin broke it open, sending one over the wall, 3 run homer, and giving the Candy a 5-0 after 1. All runs unearned. The Rock started the long slow slog back into the game starting in the 2nd inning. Randall Simon and Jorge Posada got hits, and Joe Randa drove Simon in with a single. Cincinnati made it 5-2 after Posada scored from 3rd during a David Eckstein DP with 0 outs. The Rock scored again in the 3rd on a Junior Spivey double. 5-3 after 3 innings. The Candy extended their lead in the 7th. Shigetoshi Hasegawa was on the mound, the third pitcher of the day (Schilling lasted just 2 innings, but interestingly enough, his post-season ERA actually went down). Bobby Abreu singled and Chipper Jones doubled to put runners at 2nd & 3rd. Todd Helton hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3. Tomokazu Ohka remained on the mound in the top of the 9th inning. Geoff Jenkins struck out, Sean Burroughs grounded out and Jorge Posada struck out for the easy 1-2-3 inning. 5 big unearned runs were the difference, as the Angry Candy win game 1 by a score of 6 to 3. Tomokazu Ohka pitches AC's 2nd complete game of this post-season, after pitching none in the regular season. And Guess who gets extra fielding practice tomorrow? After their bummer of a game one, Cincinnati was looking to even up the series. In the top of the first, hot bat Joe Randa singled and scored on a Jorge Posada double. Posada himself scored in a double by Aaron Rowand. 2-0 Rock after 1. The Angry Candy scored in the bottom of the 2nd, when with 2 outs and the bases loaded, a wild pitch scored Pierzynski ... who had reached on error. 7 total Angry Candy runs scored in this series, and only 1 of them earned. The Rock added 2 more runs to their lead in the 4th on a Ramon Martinez 2-run shot. Roy Oswalt pitched 8 strong innings, giving up just that one unearned run. Felix Rodriguez came on in the 9th to retire the batters 1-2-3. Cincinnati commits only one small fielding gaffe to take game two by a score of 4-1 and even the series. Curt Schilling was back on the mound after giving up 5 unearned runs in game one. Unfortunately for Schilling, game five didn't turn out much better. Bobby Abreu hit a solo shot in the 1st inning. Torii Hunter tagged Schilling for a 2-run shot in the 2nd. Chipper Jones hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd. 5 runs again, this time all earned. Cincinnati would get within 2, but the Angry Candy eventually pulled away. Everything that has a beginning has an end, and for the Rock and Angry Candy, one of them would be victorious and advance to the CFOD world series, and the other would simply be done for the season. In the top of the first, 4 of the first 5 batters hit singles off of Josh Beckett, manufacturing 2 runs. In the 2nd inning, David Eckstein singled, moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Bartolo Colon, moved to 3rd on a Junior Spivey flyout, and scored when Jeremy Giambi hit a scorcher to Jose Valentin, who bumbled the ball. In the top of the 4th inning, David Eckstein singled again, was bunted over again by Bartolo Colon, and scored again, this time on a single by Ken Griffey Jr. 4-0 Rock. Beckett would last only 3 2/3 innings. The Angry Candy started to chip away at the Rock's lead in the bottom of the 4th. AJ Pierzynski singled, moved to 2nd on a wild pitch, and scored on Torii Hunter's double. In the bottom of the 6th, Pierzynski hit a 0 out double, moved to 3rd on a flyout by Hunter, and scored on a Jose Valentin groundout. 4-2 Cincinnati. The game would go to the bottom of the 9th with the score still 4-2 in Cincinnati's favor. The Candy's season was now down to 3 outs, and Colon was gunning for a complete game. First batter up, Torii Hunter, hit the ball right up the middle for a base hit. 0 outs. The tying run was now at bat. Or was. Jose Valentin struck out for out #1. So did Andy Fox. AC's season now hinged on pinch hitter Damian Easley. Easley hit a little roller to the left side of the mound.
