2002 CFOD All-Star Teams Below are the teams for the 2002 CFOD all-star game, to be held at Shea Stadium, home of the San Francisco Shriners, the team with the best record. Players were selected according to the following formulas: BATVAL = 0.09*(RUNS+RBI)+(AB+BB)*(OBA+SBSLG-0.757)*0.09 STARTPITVAL = ((WINS+SAVES)/1.2+IP/10*((LN(4.19/ERA)+LN(1.37/WHIP)))) RELPITVAL = ((WINS+SAVES)/1.6+IP/5*((LN(4.19/ERA)+LN(1.37/WHIP)))) Where SBSLG is slugging percentage with net steals factored in, WHIP is (walks + hits)/IP, and LN is the natural log of the function. Starters are those that have at least half of their game appearances as game starts, while relievers are those that do not have at least half of their appearances as game starts. Hitters only qualified at the position where they've played the most this season, with centerfields also qualifying in the left/right field positions if they had enough value. In general the formulas were balanced such that the best hitters/starters/relievers had an equal contribution from runs/RBI's/wins/saves as from their sabrmatic-esque stats. Park City's Jim Thome is putting up an MVP season. The high-octane offense of the Arizona Thunder have put no less than 5 sluggers on the all-star team. 3D Troy Glaus and catcher Ben Davis are starters. After a few years of mediocrity, Topeka's Jason Kendall returns with a nice first half 2002. Pedro is once again on top of his game, and is the #1 starter for the RY all-stars. California put 2 starters in the rotation, with Tim Hudson and newcomer Matt Clement. Seattle's Keith Foulke is leading the league in saves, and is the #2 closer for the RY all-stars. Brookfield's Francisco Cordero has a nice 1.13 ERA, 17 saves, and the #1 overall closer role. Interestingly enough, the team with the best record in the conference (Seattle, with a 49-30 record), only placed Foulke as an all-star. Fullmer's been knocking the stuffing out of the ball, with a .350 average and .601 slugging average. Barry Bonds takes his usual place as #1. Bakersfield fills the left hand side of the infield with SS Miguel Tejada and 3B Edgardo Alfonzo (catcher Ivan Rodriguez is a reserve all-star). The Angry Candy put their entire outfield on the all-star team, with Torii Hunter and Chipper Jones starters, and Bobby Abreu a reserve. The player Fullmer was traded for, Junior Spivey, is a reserve 2nd baseman for the MK all-stars. The late-season trade of Jason Giambi opened up a spot on the team at first, which was filled by LA's John Olerud. Young phenom Roy Oswalt switched conferences this year, but the result is nearly the same, being the #2 all-star starter. The #1 is teammate Curt Schilling, and #4 Bartolo Colon makes it a 3-some for Cincinnati. The Syndicate have traditionally been known for pitching, but this year have two workhorses, one starter (Rick Helling) and one reliever (Tim Wakefield). Wakefield has been very busy as a reliever, throwing 102 innings of 2.03 ERA ball. Boston's Jorge Julio is the best "pure" closer on the staff, with 18 saves. Mike Remlinger has been unusually dangerous, giving up just 1 earned run in 30 innings of relief. Hometown Shriner fans can look forward to the play of starter Brian Lawrence and closer Chad Bradford.
