NOTES: The 2001 CFOD regular season has come to a close. The Coneheads and 'Topes won their final games, and the Brouhaha, Termites and Piazza's lost their final game. Brookfield endured a 10-game losing streak at the end of August which seemingly put them out of playoff contention, but they had an excellent September to win them a league wildcard playoff spot. Springfield remained out of the playoff picture until the final month of the season, when their strong September made them contenders (and wildcard holders). California is used to sitting on top of the league, but this year will have to settle for the RY conference wildcard. The Angry Candy avoided any nasty playoff qualification series early, clinching the MK conference wildcard fairly early. Behind the big bat of Luis Gonzalez, the Arizona Thunder clinched their first pennant in their post-McGwire era. Paxtang has won the CFOD world championship before, but this is the first year they've ever won the Ruth division pennant. Their 106 wins is the league high water mark as well. The 2000 CFOD champs Cincinnati made easy work of the Koufax division, winning their 3rd straight pennant. The mighty offense of the Mechan Syndicate propelled it to their first pennant since 1997, which coincidentally was the same year they won the CFOD title. Here is the playoff bracket: 1_Mechan Syndicate (HFA)______ 4_Springfield 'Topes_(LG WC)__|___________ 3_Angry Candy (MK WC)_________ |__MK Conf winner___ 2_Cincinnati Rock (HFA)_______|___________| | | 2_Arizona Thunder (HFA)_______ _2001 CFOD Champ____| 3_California Coneheads (RY WC)|___________ | 4_Brookfield Brouhaha (LG WC)_ |__RY Conf winner___| 1_Paxtang Pitbulls (HFA)______|___________| The Park City Climbers certainly gave it their all this year, but the injured status of Pedro Martinez and overall underperforming crew caused them to have the league's worst record at 51-111. The Miami Mangos, Somerville Sluggers and Toronto Towers also qualified for the "95 losses and over" category in next year's draft. The San Francisco Piazza's will have to console themselves over not making the playoffs by having the next highest draft spot (#5). Numerous records were broken this year. No one rewrote the book like Barry Bonds of the Mechan Syndicate. Bonds set new records in sluggging average (breaking Jeff Bagwell's 8 year old record), runs (breaking A-Rod's record last year and scored 201 runs), home runs (breaking Mark McGwires' 1999 record by *5* homers), and walks (breaking Jason Giambi's 2000 record by 21). Speaking of Jason Giambi, the Regulators slugger failed to maintain that .400 batting average, but his final average of .397 is good enough to break Tony Gwynn's 1994 high water mark, and Giambi's .524 on base average breaks Larry Walker's 4 year mark. Bonds' teammate Rafael Palmeiro breaks Carlos Delgado's RBI record with 184 RBI's. Todd Helton breaks his own doubles record with 76. On the pitching side, a lone individual record was broken. Park City's Dave Burba was an iron-man, pitching 109 games in relief to break Tim Leary's 9 year old appearances record. On the team records front, the powerful offense of the Mechan Syndicate set numerous production records, including total runs (breaking their own 2 year old record), RBI (same), and home runs (breaking Paxtang's 2 year old record). The Angry Candy set a new team doubles record with 401, breaking the old mark set by the Zippys 2 years ago. On the pitching side, the Toronto Towers tied the league low for complete games with 0. Thanks to all for another great season. I will be sending out playoff information shortly.
