2001 PLAYOFF PREVIEW ROUND 1 Cincinnati Rock (96-66, Koufax Division Pennant Winners) vs. Angry Candy (93-69, MK Conference Wildcard Winner) These two playoff vets last battled in 1999, when the Rock defeated the then named Reservoir Dogs in 6 games to appear in the CFOD world series. The Cincinnati Rock didn't win it all that year, but only had to wait until last season's 2000 CFOD world series to claim the championship in 7 games. Cincinnati had a pretty easy go of it this season, winning their division early and finishing 17 games out in front. Carlos Beltran's sophomore slump officially ended, as the young superstar hit 43 homers, stolen 42 bases, scored 122 runs and drove in 133 while hitting .332. There's a Giambi in the playoffs, but it's Jason's brother Jeremy, who had a pretty decent season (20 homers, 87 runs scored in 426 at bats). 3B Troy Glaus was a terror at the plate, bashing 52 homers with 127 runs driven in. OF/2B Frank Catalanotto was a mid-season acquisition, but hit .366 in his time with the Rock. While the batting was good, what drove the Rock this year was pitching. Their 4.00 team ERA was 2nd best in the league. Brad Penny went 18-10 with a 3.13 ERA, and Al Leiter went 15-8 with a 3.72 ERA. Closer Kazuhiro Sasaki saved 35 games witha 2.95 ERA. The Angry Candy battled it out with the Mechan Syndicate for most of the season before settling in for the MK conference wildcard. Todd Helton and Chipper Jones combined for the best corner in baseball. Helton hit 46 homers, 76 doubles, scored 130 runs and drove in 152. Chipper Jones hit 40 homers with 127 runs scored and 120 RBI. OF Bobby Abreu had only 497 at bats, but still hit 35 homers with 128 runs scored. OF Jeromy Burnitz drove in 102 runs in only 459 at bats. Most of the starting pitchers were simply innings eaters (their winningest pitcher, Paul Abbott, finished 13-11 with a 5.26 ERA). But the pitchers that made a difference made a big difference. Ramiro Mendoza pitched in only 16 games, but went 12-3 in that span. Closer Troy Percival was money, giving up 7 earned runs all season. Percival finished 11-0, with 25 saves, and a 0.90 ERA. Their 74-2 record after leading in the 7th inning was 2nd best in the league. Cincinnati won the regular season series 5 games to 4, and have the home field advantange. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Angry Candy (Abbott) at Rock (Penny) The first pitch had not even been thrown when controversy erupted. The Angry Candy planned to start Ramiro Mendoza in game one, but due to a league minimum games started rule, Mendoza was disqualified from starting. In his place was Paul Abbott. In the bottom of the 1st, Frank Catalanotto hit a 0 out single. 2 outs later, Carlos Beltran hit a dribbler in front of the plate. Pierzynski threw to first, but the ball sailed over Helton's head. Runners at 2nd and 3rd, with 2 outs. Up next was Chris Richard. What happens? 3 run homer. Cincinnati scored 3 unearned runs in the 1st. In the top of the 2nd, with 0 outs and runners at first and third, Torii Hunter hit a grounder to 2nd. While Hunter was being thrown out at first, Chipper Jones scored from third. 3-1 Rock. In the top of the 5th inning, Todd Walker was issued a base on balls, moved to 2nd on a groundout by Pierzynski and was driven in by a single from Paul Abbott. 3-2 Rock. The game would remain 3-2 in Cincinnati's favor going into the top of the 9th. Closer Kazuhiro Sasaki was pitching for the Rock. Chipper Jones hit a 0 out double. Burnitz grounded out, but got Jones to 3rd. 1 out. Torii Hunter tied things up with a sacrifice fly, scoring Jones from 3rd. 3-up, tie ball game. The Rock had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 9th. They'd be facing Troy Percival, who pitched a scoreless 8th. Catalanotto flied out. David Segui struck out. Troy Glaus popped out. The game would go to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Pierzynski hit a 0 out triple off Sasaki. Pinch hitter Adrian Brown doubled him in, giving the Candy the 4-3 lead. Jimenez doubled in Brown, making it 5-3. Todd Helton hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Jimenez and giving the Angry Candy a 6-3 lead. The bottom of the 10th put Jim Mecir on the mound and the Rock 3 runs down. Carlos Beltran singled. Chris Richard, of the 3-run homer earlier in the day, struck out. The next batter, Russ Johnson, hit into a game ending double play. The Angry Candy overcome an early 3 run deficit to win game one 6-3 in extra innings. In the top of the 3rd inning, Mike Kinkade of the Candy singled, as did Omar Daal. Frank Menechino singled to drive in the first run of the game. Al Leiter threw a wild pitch to score another. A passed ball moved Menechino to 3rd, who scored on Chipper Jones' groundout. A Shane Spencer solo shot would make it 4-0 after 3. In the bottom of the 3rd, Cincinnati closed the gap on a 2 on, 2 out 2 RBI single by Shawn Wooten. In the top of the 4th, Torii Hunter reached 1st on error, moved to 2nd on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Omar Daal. 5-2. Angry Candy. In the bottom of the 4th and top of the 5th, Cincinnati's Michael Young and Angry's Chipper Jones traded solo shots for a 6-3 game after the top of the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 5th, Omar Daal put 2 on before facing Troy Glaus. Glaus doubled, making it 6-4. Shawn Wooten hit a single, driving in 2 runs, giving the catcher 4 RBI for the day, and tying the game up at 6. In the bottom of the 7th, Cincinnati took the lead with a solo shot by David Segui. 7-6. In the top of the 8th inning, with 2 outs and 2 on, Kazuhiro Sasaki came on to relieve Steve Karsay. Sasaki didn't have a good game one, and unfortunately for Cincinnati, game two wasn't much better. Sasaki throws a meatball to Todd Helton, who bashed it into the stands for a 3-run homer. The Angry Candy took a 9-7 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Rey Ordonez singled, causing the Candy to call in the heavy artillery. Troy Percival. Alex Gonzalez came up to bat, and got plunked. The free base put 2 runners on. Next batter, Carlos Beltran, hit a grounder to 2nd, getting Gonzalez out but putting runners on at first and third with 2 outs. The next batter, Shawon Dunston, singled, slimming the lead to just 1. Next batter, David Segui, singled. Carlos Beltran tried to score from second, but couldn't beat the throw home. The Rock would go into the bottom of the 9th still down by 1. Troy Percival was on the mound for the Angry Candy. First batter up, Troy Glaus, walked. Shawn Wooten grounded out, moving Glaus to 2nd. Craig Paquette walked. There was just 1 out. Michael Young struck out for out #2. Rey Ordonez was up next, and hit a dribbler in the infield. Rey's speedy legs were enough to make it an infield single, and the bases were loaded. Bases loaded, 2 outs, Cincinnati down by 1, Troy Percival on the mound for the Angry Candy. So who got to step in for the Rock? Pinch hitter John Flaherty. The most important at bat of the year for Flaherty. But there would be no heroics today from Flaherty. He pops outs, ending the game. The Angry Candy win game two by a 9-8 score, and take a 2-0 series lead. Carlos Beltran hit a deep fly out, allowing Catalanotto to score. 4-2 Angry Candy. In the 5th inning, Burnitz and Torii Hunter singled to put 2 on for the Candy. Todd Walker grounded to 3rd, and Glaus started up a double play ... only the ball sailed into the outfield instead of 2nd. Burnitz scored to make it 5-2. Pierzynski grounded out to first, allowing Hunter to score. 6-2 Angry Candy. Julian Tavarez singled. Another run scored. 7-2 Angry Candy. The Candy loaded the bases, and Todd Helton hit a 2-RBI single. 9-2 Angry Candy (and *all* of those runs in the 5th were unearned). Cincinnati never recovered. The Angry Candy win game 3 by a score of 9-3, and are just 1 win away from advancing to the MK conference finals. The 4th starters, Colon for Cincinnati and Ohka for the Candy, were dominant for most of their innings. The first run of the game didn't occur in the 5th inning. In the 5th, Jeremy Giambi and Carlos Beltran walked, and Richard drove in Giambi with a single. The Angry Candy tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Todd Walker. The game would remain 1-1 going into the 9th inning. Jim Mecir was pitching for the Angry Candy. Catalanotto flied out for out #1. Giambi flied out for out #2. Glaus ended the inning with a strikeout. The Candy would have a chance to advance in the playoffs in the bottom of the inning. The Rock kept Steve Karsay on the mound to start his 2nd inning. First batter up was Todd Helton, who struck out. Helton didn't like the last call, and argued with the ump .. and got an ejection. Chipper jones popped out for the 2nd out. Burnitz could have been the hero of the day for the Angry Candy, but struck out instead. The game would go to extra innings (the 2nd extra innings game of the series). Mecir remained in the game in the top of the 10th inning, and struck out Beltran for the first out of the inning. Chris Richard walked, which brought John Smoltz into the game for the Candy. After 8 pitches, Smoltz got Russ Johnson to hit into an inning ending double play. In the bottom of the inning, the Rock took a chance and put Sasaki into the game. Sasaki got the first batter, Torii Hunter, to strike out. Todd Walker singled. Shane Spencer singled, moving Walker to third, with 1 out. Mike Kinkade was up to bat. A deep fly out would win the game. But Kinkade could only hit a shallow pop out, making it 2 away. D'Angelo Jimenez walked to load the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th. Sasaki was still on the mound, and Bobby Abreu was at the plate. Moment of truth time ... and Sasaki finally showed why he was the regular season closer for the Rock, getting Abreu to pop out to end the inning. Still 1-1 after 10. In the top of the 11th inning, Scott Sullivan was pitching for the AC's. Brad Fullmer was issued a 0 out walk. Ramon Hernandez singled, moving Fullmer to 3rd. Troy Glaus struck out. Frank Catalanotto flied out, and Fullmer attempted to score from 3rd. The throw went home, but Fullmer was able to beat the tag. 2-1 Cincinnati after 10 1/2. In the bottom of the 11th winning, Bob Wickman was aiming to save the game for Cincinnati. Reggie Sanders grounded out. Chipper Jones walked. Jeromy Burnitz struck out. 2 outs, runner on for Torii Hunter. Hunter singled, moving Jones to 3rd. 2 outs, runners on first and third, with Todd Walker up at the plate. A single would extend the game, a homer would win it (both actions done by Walker so far this game). But there would be no more magic in Walker's bat this game. Walker flied out, ending game 4. Cincinnati lives to fight another day with a 2-1 victory after 11 innings. Both Paul Abbott and Brad Penny had their game going today, throwing shutouts through 6 innings. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Todd Helton hit a 2 out double, and Chipper Jones singled him in off of Bob Wickman. First run of the game. Next batter, Jeromy Burnitz, doubled, scoring Jones. 2-0 Angry Candy. In the top of the 8th, with 1 out, Carlos Beltran singled off of releiver John Smoltz. With the series on the line, the Angry Candy called out Troy Percival. Percival primed the bases by giving up a single to Chris Richard. Brad Fullmer flied out for out #2. Percival escaped the inning on another flyout by Mackowiak. The Rock came into the top of the 9th inning, down by 2 runs. Percival was still on the mound. Hernandez grounded out. Alex Gonazalez filed out. The Rock's season came down to the next at bat, Frank Catalanotto. Base hit. The Rock are alive, and the tying run, Jeremy Giambi, was at the plate. Percival was 1 out away from advancing the Angry Candy to the finals. For most of the season his brother Jason was getting all of the headlines with the chase for .400. Now it was Jeremy's shot at fame. Alas, Jeremy did not come through, hitting a pop out to end the game. The Angry Candy win game 5 by a score of 2-0, and advance to the MK conference finals.
