The off-season import bashed 64 homers (2nd in the league), scored 143 runs (6th in the league), and drove in 158 (3rd best in the league). His .359 average was 2nd best in the league. Giambi flirted with batting .400 throughout the season, before settling in at .397 (a new CFOD record and best in the league). Giambi's .524 on base percentage was also a new record, and his .767 slugging percentage was 2nd best in the league. Giambi finished 2nd in runs and 10th in RBI's. Bonds had the greatest season ever by a hitter in the CFOD. Bonds set a new home run record with 81, a new record for slugging average, a new record for runs (201!) and a new record for walks. Bonds also finished 2nd in RBI's, on base average, and was top 10 in batting average. His 37 intentional walks were best in the league. Mulder won a league-leading 22 games, and his 3.36 ERA was top 10. Buehrle's 20 wins tied for 2nd in the league, and his 2.84 ERA was 3rd best in the league. His 10 runners per 9 innings was 2nd best in the league, as was his 75.8% quality start percentage. 2001 CFOD Cy Young: Mike Mussina, SP, Oregon Wet Sox ERA OPS W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP 2.54 .628 20 3 0 34 33 4 2 240.2 210 73 68 49 226 18 21 For the whole year, Mussina was robo-ace, pitching great game after great game. Mussina's 2.54 ERA was best among all starters, and his 20-3 record was the best winning percentage among all starters. Mussina also led the league in allowed on base average (low), 2nd in slugging percentage allowed, and allowed the least number of runners among starters (the only one to be below 10, at a 9.9 runners per game clip). Musinna's 84.8% quality start percentage was almost a full 10% higher than the 2nd place finisher. Charlton's 96.8% save percentage was best in the league, and his 30 saves was top 5. The efficiency of Charlton's pitching helped the Thunder to the 2001 Young division pennant. 1st runner up: Kyle Farnsworth, RP, Springfield 'Topes ERA OPS W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP 2.37 .578 7 8 38 71 0 0 0 79.2 53 23 21 24 99 9 4 The Springfield Isotopes had a killer pitching staff this year, and had a killer closer in Farnsworth. Farnsworth led the league in saves, with 38, and his 92.7% save percentage was 2nd in the league. Farnsworth was also a workhorse, finishing in the league top 10 in appearances. Farnsworth's 61 games finished was tied for most in the league. And, and, Farnsworth helped get the 'Topes into the playoffs. 2001 Fireman of the Year: Troy Percival, RP, Angry Candy ERA OPS W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP 0.90 .463 11 0 25 52 0 0 0 70.1 42 9 7 23 87 2 4 Percival was money all year for the Angry Candy. Percival's 0.90 ERA led all relievers, and his 0.463 OPS was 2nd only to Jeff Zimmerman of the Piazza's. Percival saved only 25 games, but in games where he didn't have the lead, he was a perfect 11-0, which was the most wins by a pure reliever this year. Percival helped the Candy have a 74-2 record after leading by 7 innings, 2nd best in the league. The ace pitching of Percival also helped the Angry Candy into the post-season as a wildcard team.
