2001 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW WORLD SERIES California Coneheads (4-1 over Arizona Thunder in Rd1, 4-2 over Brookfield Brouhaha in RY Conf Finals) vs. Angry Candy (4-1 over Cincinnati Rock in Rd1, 4-3 over Springfield Isotopes in MK Conf Finals) The entire 2001 CFOD season is almost over. From a base of 24 teams to 8 playoff teams down to 2 conference champs. The California Coneheads are no strangers to the world series, with 2001 making their 4th straight appearance and 8th overall. Their starters, inconsistent and frustratingly mediocre in the regular season, have been stars in the post-season. Tim Hudson and Freddy Garcia are 4-0 in 5 starts with a 1.73 ERA. Ace Randy Johnson is 2-1 in 4 starts with a 2.63 ERA. Closer Mariano Rivera has 5 saves in 5 games with a 1.80 ERA. Catch Mike Piazza is hitting .400 with 3 homers, 8 runs scored and 7 RBI in 11 games. 1B Jim Thome is slugging .595 with 3 homers and 9 runs scored. Shortstop Jose Valentin has 4 homers and 9 RBI. The Angry Candy have always had a fair amount of success, ever since the winning season of their inaugural 1993 campaign. 8 years later, they make their first world series appearance. They did so by defeating the the defending champion Cincinnati Rock in 5 games, and defeated the Springfield Isotopes in 7 games in the MK conference finals. Infield cornerstones Chipper Jones and Todd Helton have been cornerstones of the team throughout the playoffs. Jones is hitting .294 with 9 runs scored and 8 RBI's in 12 games. Todd Helton leads all playoff teams in RBI's with 12. 2B Todd Walker is hitting .360 with 3 homers and 7 runs scored. The Angry Candy pitchers have been surprisingly effective, with a 2.80 team ERA, 2nd only to the Coneheads in post-season ERA. Starter Paul Abbott has a 1.14 ERA in 4 starts, and closer Troy Percival is 2-0 with 4 saves in 7 appearances. In the regular season series the Angry Candy won the season series 3 games 1, but in this topsy-turvy playoffs where the conference champs were the #3 seeds, anything could happen. The Angry Candy have home field advantage due to their better regular season record (93 wins vs 90). ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Coneheads (Johnson) at Angry Candy (Abbott) -- It was back and forth between the two teams, but it definitely was won by the hitters. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Todd Helton singled, Chipper Jones walked, and Shane Spencer hit a 2 out, 2 RBI double. 2-0 AC. In the top of the 4th inning, Scott Rolen walked, and Jim Thome singled, moving Rolen to 3rd. Durazo grounded out, scoring Rolen. 2-1 AC. A wild pitch moved Jim Thome to 3rd. A Piazza singled would score Thome and tie the game up at 2. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Mike Kinkade was awarded a 2 out walk. Paul Abbott hit a 2 out single. Frank Menechino brought them all home with a 2 out, 3 run home run off of Randy Johnson. 5-2 AC. In the top of the 5th inning, Randy Johnson and Mark McLemore walked. Jim Thome blasted a 2 out 3 run homer to tie the game at 5, and knocked Abbott out of the game. In the bottom of the 5th, Chipper Jones hit a 0 out triple, and it was only a matter of time before he scored, in this case off of Shane Spencer's single. The Candy moved ahead 6-5. In the bottom of the 6th, the Angry Candy extended their lead when Todd Helton bashed a 2-run homer. 8-5 AC. Spencer made it 9-5 in the 7th inning, and Helton put the game officially out of reach in the 8th inning with another 2 run homer. Troy Percival gets 3 easy outs in the 9th to end the game. The Angry Candy win game 1 by a score of 11 to 5. In the top of the 1st, Royce Clayton hit a 1 out homer, and 2 batters later Dean Palmer smacked a 2 run shot for an early 3-0 Coneheads lead. The Angry Candy cut it to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer by Abreu. In the top of the 3rd inning, Scott Rolen singled, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on Clayton's single, and scored on a Mike Piazza single. Juan Gonzalez was walked to load the bases, bringing up Dean Palmer again. And Palmer delivered once again, taking Vladimir Nunez deep. Grand slam, Coneheads lead 8-1. Palmer homers again in the 5th for the seeminginly unsurmountable 9-1 lead. Palmer finished the game with 3 homers and 7 RBI. The Candy did score 3 runs in the 5th, capped by an Abreu 2 run homer. They scored again in the 6th. In the 7th, Todd Helton homered to make it 10-6. In the bottom of the 8th, the Candy had runners on all of the bases facing Mariano Rivera, and D'Angelo Jimenez hit a 2-out, 2 RBI single to make the Coneheads lead just 10-8. The Candy were making the mother of all comebacks. California added to their lead in the top of the 9th with a Scott Rolen solo home run off of Troy Percival. Rivera remained on the mound for California in the bottom of the 9th. Todd Helton grounded out, Chipper Jones grounded out, and Jeromy Burnitz struck out to end the game. California started strong, then held onto the lead until the end, winning game 2 by a score of 11 to 8 and ties up the series. Or at least try. Piazza gets the ball to 3rd before Burnitz, and Burnitz is thrown out. Todd Walker singled, scoring Hunter from 3rd. 1-0 AC. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Carl Everett singled, moved to 2nd on a passed ball, and scored on a Mike Piazza single. Game tied at 1. Jose Valentin gets plunked and Darin Erstad walks to load the bases with 1 out. Up comes Tim Hudson. Alas, Hudson's not much of a batter, and hits into a double play to end the inning with the game still tied at 1. In the top of the 3rd, D'Angelo Jimenez doubled and moved to 3rd on a Bobby Abreu groundout. Todd Helton walked, and a Chipper Jones sacrifice fly scored Jemenez. 2-1 AC. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Mark McLemore singled, and Scott Rolen singled to move McLemore to 3rd. Jim Thome singled in a run to tie it up at 2. A balk moves up the runners on base. Consecutive groundouts by Everett and Juan Gonzalez score runners to give California the 4-2 lead. Everett put the game out of reach in the 5th with a 3-run shot. California goes on to win game 3 7 to 2. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Mark McLemore walked and scored on Juan Gonzalez's double. 1-0 Coneheads. The Candy tied things up in the top of the 2nd with a Torii Hunter solo home run. In the top of the 7th, D'Angelo Jimenez hit a 0 out single. Todd Helton walked to put 2 runners on. Chipper Jones hit a fly out, allowing Jimenez to advance to 3rd. Jeromy Burnitz singled, scoring Jimenez and moved Helton to 3rd. The Candy take the lead, 2-1. Pinch hitter Timo Perez singled, scoring Helton. Burnitz tried to move to 3rd, but the feet of concrete slugger was thrown out, ending the inning. 3-1 AC after 7. In the top of the 8th inning, Todd Walker hit a 0 out double and moved to 3rd on an Pierzynski groundout. Pinch hitter Adrian Brown hit a ball towards McLemore, and McLemore throws home to catch Walker. Candy fail to score, but still have a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Mike Piazza singled, Homer Bush singled, and Jose Valentin walked to load the bases with 1 out. Troy Percival was brought on board for the AC. Batter up, Darin Erstad. Erstad hits a sacrifice fly deep enough to not only score Piazza from 3rd, but advances Bush to 3rd. 3-2 AC. Pinch hitter Cesar Izturis singles to score another run. Tie ballgame at 3. McLemore walks to load the bases again. Scott Rolen hit a bases loaded single to score 2 more runs. California retook the lead at 5-3. The Candy would need to score at least 2 runs in the top of the 9th to keep the game going. Mariano Rivera was once again on the mound for California. Abreu grounded out and Todd Helton grounded out to put 2 quick outs on the board. Chipper Jones hit a 2 out double. The tying run, Jeromy Burnitz, was at the plate. And remained at the plate. Burnitz struck out, ending the game. California wins game 4 by a score of 5-3, and are 1 win away from the 2001 CFOD Championship. If they didn't, it was a long road back to the Angry Candy's home turf. In the bottom of the 1st, Mark McLemore singled, stole 2nd, and scored on Thome's single. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Jose Valentin smacked a solo homer to make it 2-0. Scott Rolen hit a solo homer in the 3rd to make it 3-0 California. Jim Thome walked, and Juan Gonzalez hit a 2-run shot to make it 5-0. Paul Abbott was done for the year. Carl Everett hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. The Candy put themselves on the board in the 4th inning when Reggie Sanders hit a solo home run. In the 5th, Todd Helton doubled, and scored on Chipper Jones' single. 6-2. The Coneheads added to their lead in the 5th on a 2-run shot by Mike Piazza. 8-2 California. In the top of the 6th, Torii Hunter hit an RBI double to make it 8-3. Mike Kinkade hit a grounder to McLemore, who threw to Thome but found the stands instead, making it a 2 base error and allowed Hunter to score. 8-4 California. In the top of the 9th inning, Danys Baez was assigned the task of winning the championship for the Coneheads with a 4 run lead. First batter up, pinch hitter Todd Hundley, popped out to McLemore. 1 out. Next batter, Frank Menechino, hit a broken bat grounder to the infield. Baez picked it up and rocketed it to first, acquiring the 2nd out. 1 more out, and the Coneheads would be champions. But they'd have to get past Todd Helton. Helton doesn't go down, hitting a grounder into the outfield. Single. 2 outs, and Chipper Jones is at the plate. Jones grounds it to Royce Clayton, who tosses it to McLemore, who steps on 2nd, which ends the game. California wins game five by a score of 8-4, and capture the 2001 CFOD championship on their home turf! CONEHEADS WIN 4-1, 2001 CFOD CHAMPS. 2001 PLAYOFF MVP: There are certainly a bevy of talented sluggers who could win it, such as Jim Thome (.558 slugging, 14 runs scored, 10 RBI), Mike Piazza (.417 average, 13 runs scored, 12 RBI's) or Scott Rolen (.559 slugging, 5 homers, 13 runs scored, 11 RBI). But the key to the Coneheads victories this post-season was their mid-starters, Freddy Garcia and 2001 playoff MVP Tim Hudson.
