Round 1 Playoffs Preview San Francisco Shriners (89-73) vs Cincinnati Rock (100-62) San Francisco has done well in the playoffs when they make them: their last appearance back in 1998 had them reach the MK conference finals. They battled the Angry Candy in a "who's in the playoffs?" series and defeated them in 5 games. Sammy Sosa has been his usual stellar self, hitting .400 with 3 homers, 6 RBI's and 8 runs scored. OF Carl Everett also has 3 homers and has driven in 9 runs. 3B Jose Hernandez has got playoff fever, hitting .563 with 9 RBI's. Ace Denny Neagle has been solid in both his starts, going 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 15 1/3 innings. Reliever Dan Miceli is also 2-0. The Cincinnati Rock are looking to repeat as MK conference champs, and they plan on doing it with one of the best starting rotations in the game. Al Leiter went 16-6 with a 3.26 ERA, Bartolo Colon won 10 games with a 3.5 ERA, and Kevin Millwood and Curt Schilling combined for 30 wins. Armando Benitez saved 29 games in the closer role. In the hitting lineup, 3B Troy Glaus has been making his claim as the best third baseman in the league, and his 2000 season was killer. Glaus hit 50 homers, scored 120 runs and drove in 144. Mid-season acquisitions Delino Deshields and David Justice were particularly effective. Deshields hi .303 with 61 runs scored while Justice smacked 25 homers and drove in 68, each in half a season. Longtime league pinch hitter John Vander Wal got a solid season's worth of at bats, and responded with 28 homers, 98 runs scored and 89 RBI's. San Francisco won the season series 5 games to 4, and have home field advantage due to their Mantle pennant winner standing. *************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Rock (Leiter) at Shriners (Neagle) Troy Glaus got things started early for Cincinnati, hitting a solo shot in the 1st. In the bottom of the 9th, score still 1-0, Colon still had a chance to throw the CFOD's first ever playoff no hitter. First batter up was Eric Karros, who struck out. Second batter was Eric Young, who hit a fly out. 1 more out. Up next was Mark Grace. Grace followed suit, popping out to end the game and notch the no hitter for Colon. In the top of the 3rd, Alex Ochoa smacked a 2-run shot, driving himself and Mark Grace in. The Rock cut the lead to 1 in the bottom of the inning on a Troy Glaus RBI single. In the top of the 4th, Mark Gardner hit into a fielder's choice, but a runner scored anyways from 3rd. 3-1 San Francisco. In the bottom of the 4th, Derek Bell reached first on an error by Hernandez. Bell went to steal second, and Joe Girardi went to throw him out, but the ball wound up in center field. Bell reaches 3rd on 2 straight errors. Ben Molina drove him in with a single. 3-2 San Francisco. In the 5th inning, John Vanderl Wal doubled and scored on a Chris Richard double. Game tied at 3. In the bottom of the 8th, Derek Bell came through again, hitting a 0 out triple. Ben Molina was plunked by a pitch and was awarded first base. Pinch hitter JT Snow struck out for the first out of the inning. The next batter, Delino Deshields, hit a suicide squeeze bunt .. that was successful. Bell scores from 3rd, and Cincinnati takes a 4-3 lead. The Shriners now had a score a run in the top of the 9th to stay in the game. On the mound was Rock closer Armando Benitez. Benitez got Hernandez and Girardi to ground out to give San Francisco just 1 more AB. Kevin Millar walked, and was replaced at first by speedster Damain Jackson. Up to the plate was pinch hitter Butch Huskey. This AB was probably the longest of the game, as Benitez threw over to first multiple times to keep Jackson at bay. But it was all for naught, as Huskey struck out, ending the game. Cincinnati wins a tight one, 4-3, and takes the lead in the series. This one was no exception. The Shriners and Rock traded blows early, with the score ending up 7-4 Rock after just 3 innings. The Shriner's Chris Holt lasted 1 2/3 innings while Scott Williamson of the Rock lasted just 4 1/3 innings. In the top of the 5th, with runners at first and third, Jose Hernandez grounded out, scoring Eric Young from third. The next batter, Sammy Sosa (who had accounted for all 4 RBI's in the early innings with 2 2-run shots), hit an RBI triple, and scored himself on a Carl Everett sacrifice fly. Game tied at 7. In the bottom of the 6th, the Rock broke the standstill, or rather, John RockER broke the standstill, by giving up the gopherball to Troy Glaus. 8-7 Cincinnati. In the top of the 7th, Eric Young doubled, moved to 3rd on a deep flyout by Mark Grace, and scores on a sacrifice fly by Jose Hernandez. Tied at 8. In the top of the 9th, Cincinnati's Lou Pote was on the mound, and got the requisite 3 outs. Now Cincinnati had 3 chances to take the game in the bottom of the 9th. Vic Darensbourg was on the mound for San Francisco. First batter up was Troy "the man" Glaus, who hit a 0 out double. A couple of sacrifice flies would win the game, but it wasn't necessary. David Justice hit a double, scoring Glaus from second. Cincinnati wins a tight one, 9-8, to put them one game from the MK conference finals. In the bottom of the first, off Neagle, Devon White walked, and scored on a Delino Desheilds double. In the bottom of the 2nd, Jeremy Giambi singled, and Ben Molina took Neagle deep. 2-run shot, 3-0 Rock. Later in the inning, Russ Johnson singled, and scored on White's double. 4-0. Delino Deshields gets a 2-out infield single. The next batter, Troy Glaus, hit a grounder to Benjamin, who booted it. White scores, and the game is now 5-0 Cincinnati in the second. The Shriners were not going to give up easily. In the top of the 4th, Mark Grace doubled, and scored on a single by Sammy Sosa. Einar Diaz hit an RBI double to close the lead to 3. In the top of the 5th, Sosa hit another RBI single to close the lead to two. We would go to the top of the 9th with the Rock still leading 5 to 3. Armando Benitez was on the mound. Just 3 outs separated the Rock from the MK conference finals. First batter up, pinch hitter Armando Rios, struck out. Kevin Millar popped out. 1 more out. Up next was pinch hitter Eric Karros. One more out and that's the ballgame. Karros hits a deep fly ball, but it heads towards Devon White .. who drops it! Karros is safe at first on error! Up now was Eric Young, who was the tying run of the game. Young had a chance to be the hero, but it wasn't to be. Young strikes out, ending the game and the Shriners' season. Cincinnati wins game five by a score of 5-3, and win the closely-fought series 4 games to 1. Cincinnati advances to the MK conference finals.
