2000 "SEMI" PLAYOFF PREVIEW San Francisco Shriners (89-73) vs. Angry Candy (89-73) The regular season wasn't enough to decide who was going to the playoffs, so a special 7 game series is to decide who gets to go to the postseason. The winner moves on, the loser goes home as if they've never seen past game #162 at all. The 1997 trade bringing Sammy Sosa to San Francisco has envigorated the franchise, who have not had a losing record since their '96 campaign. Sosa was golden again this year, making the all-star team and finishing with 53 homers, 107 runs scored and 134 RBI. CF Carl Everett also made the all-star team, hitting 28 dingers, scoring 108 runs and driving in 98. 2B Eric Young was a rocket around the bases, stealing a league-high 75 bases and scored 104 times. Even though Randy Johnson hasn't graced the roster for 3 years, the Shriners posted a 4.08 ERA, 3rd best in the league. Denny Neagle was an all-star, and finished with 13 wins and a 2.96 ERA. 13 was a popular number for San Francisco, as those were the win total for their other 3 starters, Glendon Rusch (13-11), Mark Gardner (13-6) and Chris Holt (13-9). Once Vic Darensberg took over the closing position from John Rocker, he excelled at it, saving 18 games with a 3.23 ERA. The Angry Candy (formerly known as the Reservoir Dogs) have been a dominant force in the Mantle division since their inception in the 1993 expansion draft. They field a potent lineup, featuring 3B Chipper Jones, (.34 homers, 116 runs scored, 150 RBI) and 1B Todd Helton (.336 average, 74 doubles, 118 runs scored, 131 RBI). OF Bobby Abreu scored 118 runs, and Jeromy Burnitz bashed 35 homers and drove in 101. On the pitching side of things, Jim Parque made the all-star team, and finished with 11 wins and a 3.63 ERA. Orlando Hernandez won 15, and Scott Elarton went 14-9. Julian Tavarez won 11 games in just 21 starts. Closer Troy Percival saved 20 games, while long reliever CJ Nitkowski won 8 games and saved 10 in 85 appearances. The Angry Candy and San Francisco Shriners tied their regular season series 6-6, but due to the Candy's run margin get the home field advantage. If the Moshers win their series, the winner of this series goes in as Mantle pennant winners against the Cincinnati Rock. If the Towers win their series, the Angry Candy would go in as the #2 league wildcard to face Somerville in round 0 action, while the Sluggers would go in as the Mantle division pennant winner. ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Shriners (Neagle) vs. Angry Candy (Parque). The first hit of the game came in the 2nd inning, when Butch Huskey smacked a 2-out single off of Parque. Einar Diaz singled as well, bringing up Jose Hernandez .. who drove in the games first three runs with a 3-run dinger. In the top of the 4th, Jose Hernandez drove in another run, this time a fielder's choice. The Candy strike back in the bottom of the 4th on a solo shot by Chipper Jones. But the Shriner attack kept going. In the 6th inning, Einar Diaz singled in Sammy Sosa from 3rd. For the icing on the cake, Carl Everett blasted a 3-run shot in the top of the 9th. Denny Neagle pitched 7 1/3 innings of 1 run ball, notching the win in the 8-1 Shriners game. The Shriners evened things up in the 2nd when Carl Everett singled, moved to 3rd on Jose Hernandez's double, and scored on Joe Girardi's fielder's choice. The Candy had a chance to score more runs in the bottom of the 3rd in a bases loaded situation with 2 outs, but Randy Velarde flied out to end the inning still tied at 1. The Candy did capitalize in the 5th, when Chipper Jones bashed the ball over the wall, scoring himself and Rondell White for a 2-run lead. The Shriners answered right back in the top of the 6th on a Sammy Sosa 2-run shot. The game would go into the 8th inning with the score tied at 3 all. In the top of the 8th, Sammy Sosa singled, ending the day of Orlando Hernandez. Scott Sullivan came on in relief, and immediately got rocked for a 2-run homer by Carl Everett. San Francisco takes the lead for the first time in the game, 5-3. But the lead wouldn't last long. In the bottom of the 8th, Dan Miceli on the mound for the Shriners, Randy Velarde cut the lead to 1 with a solo shot. Next up was pinch hitter Bobby Abreu, who hit a back-to-back homer, tying the game up at 5. On to the 9th. On the mound for the Angry Candy was Ramiro Mendoza, who gave up a leadoff single to Mark Grace. Alex Ochoa hit a double, and Grace motored around the bases to try and score. The ball was thrown from the outfield to home plate, but the tag wsan't quick enough. Mark Grace scores, and the Shriners go up 6-5 ... but all of the heroics wasn't necessary, as the next batter, Sammy Sosa, hit his 2nd 2-run homer of the game, making it an 8-5 San Francisco game. In the bottom of the 9th, Vic Darensbourg came on for San Francisco. The first batter up, Reggie Sanders, walked. The next batter, Chipper Jones, hit into a double play ... if it hadn't gone through Eric Young's legs. Error to the second baseman, and 2 runners are on with 0 outs. The first out is recorded when Todd Helton struck out. Jeromy Burnitz flied out for out #2. Next batter up was Randy Velarde. 2 outs, 2 on, 3 runs down. Velarde ended up smacking the ball well out of the infield .. into the outfield .. going back ... back ... down .. down .. down .. into an outfielder's glove. San Francisco wins a closely fought game by an 8-5 score. Todd Helton came alive in the 1st, doubling in Mark Bernard for the first AC run of the game. Jeromy Burnitz added to the score with a 2-run homer. 3-0 Angry Candy in the 1st. In the 3rd inning, AC added to their lead. With 2 runners on, Bobby Abreu hit an RBI single. 4-0, and Helton moves to third. Burnitz, the next batter, hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Helton. 5-0 Candy. The Candy scored twice more in the 4th for a commanding 7-0 lead, putting the game out of reach ... ...or was it enough? In the bottom of the 4th, with 2 runners on, Carl Everett knocked an Elarton pitch over the fence for a 3-run homer. In the 5th inning, with 2 runners on, Jose Hernandez knocked an Elarton pitch over the fence for a 3-run homer. That 7-0 lead evaporated to a 7-6 lead in just 2 innings. In the bottom of the 6th, with Butch Huskey at first, catcher Einar Diaz gave the Shriners the lead for the first time in the game with a 2-run shot. In the bottom of the 7th, Carl Everett singled, and tried to steal second ... but was caught in a throwdown. Todd Helton managed to muck it up, plunking him in the back, officially "catching" Everett stealing but awarding him second on the throwing error. Not to be content with being thrown out stealing second, Everett stole third, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Jose Hernandez completed a 5-for-5 day in the 8th with an RBI single. In the top of the 2nd, Chris Holt's pitch barely grazed Julian Tavarez's uniform, awarding him a free base. Next batter up was Chipper Jones, who took Holt deep. 2-0 Angry Candy. In the third inning, Jeromy Burnitz walked, stole second and scored on a single by Alex Gonzalez. In the bottom of the 3rd, those pesky Shriners roared back. With the bases loaded and 0 outs, Tavarez threw a tough pitch that Barrett couldn't control. It gets past him, everyone moves up a base and a runner scores. 3-1 AC. The next batter hits into a fielder's choice, scoring Ochoa from 3rd. 3-2 AC. Jose Hernandez hits the ball into the infield, and Eric Young goes to score from third. Chipper Jones tries to throw him out, but isn't fast enough. Young scores, and the game is tied at 3 apiece. Chipper Jones broke the tie in the 4th on another home run, a solo tater this time. The Shriners scored a run of their own in the 5th on a Carl Everett RBI double. In the top of the 8th with the score still tied at 4-all, The Candy's Alex Gonzalez hit a 0 out double. John Rocker comes on in relief for San Francisco, and walks Gary Bennett. Still 0 outs. Todd Walker hits into a potential double play ball, but they can only get the out at second. Runners at 1st & 3rd with 1 out, the score still tied. Chipper Jones breaks the deadlock again, hitting an RBI single. Marvin Benard walked to load the bases. Todd Helton struck out for out #1. Rocker's wild pitch scored Walker from 3rd, giving the Angry Candy a 2-run lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Ramiro Mendoza was pitching for the Candy, his 4th inning of the game. The first batter, Kevin Millar, flied out. Tony Graffanino popped out. And pinch hitter Eric Karros struck out, ending the game.
