2000 "SEMI" PLAYOFF PREVIEW Toronto Towers (89-73) vs. Seattle Moshers (89-73) The regular season wasn't enough to decide who was going to the playoffs, so a special 7 game series is to decide who gets to go to the postseason. The winner moves on, the loser goes home as if they've never seen past game #162 at all. The Toronto Towers enjoyed their best season ever in 2000, sharing the Mantle division pennant with the Angry Candy and San Francisco Shriners. The Towers have one of the deepest middle infields in the game. Toronto's catching batter had no equal in 2000. Catchers Ivan Rodriguez and Charles Johnson combined to hit .318, with 43 doubles, 42 homers, 112 runs scored and 142 RBI's. 2B Edgardo Alfonzo made the all-star team and finished up with 124 runs scored. Miguel Tejada continues to improve his game year after year, hitting 23 homers and driving/scoring 76 runs from the shortstop spot. OF Ryan Klesko was the big bat in the middle, smashing 37 homers, drove in 120 and scored 107. 1B Carlos Lee hit 38 and drove in 110. The pitching staff was overall better than league average, posting a 4.28 ERA. Anchoring the staff are a pair of all-star relievers, Jose Santiago and LaTroy Hawkins. The duo combined for a sub-3.00 ERA, 11 wins, and 31 saves. The Seattle Moshers have been on a "close but no cigar" pace for the past 4 years, and their 89 wins this year was the highest since 1995. After a terrible 1999, ace Greg Maddux came back in 2000 with a vengence, posting a 20-8 record with a 3.21 ERA. In just 17 stars, Ismael Valdes posted a 9-3 record. Turk Wendell struggled early in the season, but came back strong in the second half to finish with a 3.92 ERA and 26 saves. For hitters, the Moshers depended on their corner outfielders, Magglio Ordonez and Tim Salmon, who both made the all-star this year. The duo combined for 248 RBI's, 200 runs, and 63 home runs. The 1B platoon of Will Clark and Fernando Seguignol matched up with any 1B in the league, combining for a .335 average, .438 on base average, 35 homers and 125+ runs and RBI. 2B Fernando Vina scored 112 runs. In the regular season, the Towers won the series 3-1. Due to a larger run differential, the Moshers get home field advantage for this series. If the Moshers win this series, they go into the playoffs as the #2 league wildcard and face the Coneheads. If the Towers win, they either go in as the #2 league wildcard to face the Sluggers in round 0 play or as the Mantle division pennant hold to face the Rock, depending on the outcome of the Angry Candy/Sluggers series. ******************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Towers (Mercedes) at Seattle (Maddux). Oh my. Seattle ran right out of the gate and never looked back. In the bottom of the 1st, Fernando Vina singled and Ray Lankford drove the both of them in with a 2-run shot. Tim Salmon hit a back-to-back solo shot for the 3-0 game. Several batters later, Jorge Fabregas singled, scoring a runner from 3rd. 4-0 Seattle in the 1st inning. With the lead in the 3rd, Will Clark tried to steal second .. against Ivan Rodriguez. Results were predicable, Clark was out by a mile. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Tony Womack hit a 0-out triple. The next batter, Greg Maddux, hit a grounder towards 3rd. Robin Ventura tried to throw Womack out at home, but Tony was too quick. Womack scores, and it is a 5-0 game. It gets worse. The bases get loaded, and Omar Olivares comes on the mound for the Towers. He walks Tim Salmon. 6-0 Seattle. Will Clark hits an infield single. 7-0 Seattle. Jorge Fabregas hits a 2 out, 2-RBI bases loaded single. 9-0 Seattle. Womack comes up to bat again in the inning, and hits an RBI single. 10-0 Seattle. In the top of the 5th, Greg Maddux finally got into trouble, giving up a bases loaded sacrifice fly for a 10-1 game. It wouldn't be nearly enough. The Moshers were not done yet. They add on 2 in the 5th and pound out *7* more runs in the 8th inning, when most of the Mosher bench got into the action. Seattle wins game one big time, by a score of 19-5. Fernando Vina singled, and Mark Kotsay singled, putting Vina at third with 0 outs. Then, Kotsay tried to steal 2nd, but was thrown out in a pitch out. Magglio Ordonez hit a grounder to Carlos Lee, who threw home to get Vina. The Mosher early inning rally fizzled out without a run scored. In the top of the 3rd, Robin Ventura doubled, and scored the first run of the game on a Becker double. Becker became the second run of the game on an Alfonzo double. The Moshers wouldn't go quietly, tying up the game in the bottom of the inning by a 2-run Seguignol homer. In the top of the 5th, Ryan Klesko put Toronto ahead once more with a 2 run tater. Robin Ventura hit an RBI single later on for a 5-2 Toronto game. In the 6th, Toronto added to their lead on RBI singles by Klesko, Rodriguez and Carlos Lee. Toronto recovers nicely from their game 1 pasting to win game 2 by an 8-2 score. Robin Ventura singled, and Kenny Lofton came up to bat. What happened? You guessed it. 2-run homer. Toronto scores 6 runs in the 3rd for a 7-0 game. The Moshers put themselves on the board in the 5th on a solo homer by Cal Ripken, but it wasn't nearly enough. Toronto piled on 5 more runs in the latter innings to blow out Seattle, 12-1, and take the lead in the series. The first run of the game happened in the 4th, when Jorge Fabregas hit a sacrifice fly to score Will Clark from 2nd. The Towers quickly responded in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back homers by Miguel Tejada and Robin Ventura. 2-1 Toronto. In the bottom of the 5th, the bases were loaded with 0 outs and Ryan Klesko was at the plate. Klesko's had a heck of a regular season, and it appears he wants to have a heck of a post-season, as he took Appier out of the park for a grand slam. 6-1 Towers. The Moshers whittled at the lead in the latter innings. Toronto's lead was cut to 3 in the 7th when Fernando Vina hit a 2-run homer. The lead was cut to 2 in the 8th on a solo home run by Will Clark. But that's as close as Seattle could get. Ivan Rodriguez made it 7-4 in the 8th on a solo home run of his own, and that's how the score would end. Toronto wins game four, and is 1 game away from entering the "official" playoffs.
