Closing duties were shared by Mike Myers and Rob Nen, who combined for 30 saves. The Sacramento Fish captured their first division title in 9 years. Leading the way for Sacramento is slugger phenom Vladimir Guerrero, who pounded out 51 homers, scored 138 runs and drove in 134, while hitting .350. 3B Adrian Beltre hit 28 homers and scored 103 runs, while OF Lance Berkman hit 29 homers with 88 runs driven in. Jose Jimenez led the team in saves with 15, and had a 2.22 ERA. The Fish spread the saves around, winding up with 51 team saves, tied for 4th in the league. The Fish won the regular season series 5-4, and have home field advantage. ********************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Termites (Wells) at Fish (Milton) The opening game of the series was closely fought. In the bottom of the 2nd, with Edgar Renteria at 2nd, an intentional walk was given to Dan Wilson to face Eric Milton with 2 outs. Milton came through, doubling in Renteria for the 1-0 Fish game. In the top of the 4th, Mike Sweeney singled, stole second, and scored on Jeff Kent's double. 1-1. The Termites went ahead later in the inning on a Sandy Alomar single. The game was tied at 2 in the bottom of the inning on a Bruce Aven single. The game would remain tied at 2 through regulation, which meant extra innings. In the top of the 10th, with Matt Morris on the mound for Sacramento, Omar Vizquel and Craig Counsell walked with 0 outs. Ramon Martinez flied out, but Vizquel advanced to third. Orlando Palmeiro hit a grounder to Belliard, but it went under his glove, letting Vizquel score from 3rd. In the bottom of the 10th, the Fish were down 3-2. That was quickly fixed, as Vladimir Guerrero took Mike James deep out of the park, tying the game up at 3. We would move to the top of the 11th with the game still tied at 3. With Matt Morris still on the mound, Craig Counsell hit an RBI single, pulling the Termites ahead yet again. This time, there would be no heroics for Sacramento in the bottom of the inning. San Diego wins game one by a score of 4-3 in 11 innings. In the 6th, with 2 on, Mike Sweeney hit an RBI single to break the deadlock. A Jeff Kent fielders choice scored another run, making it 2-0 Termites in the 6th. In the 7th inning, Vladimir Guerrero scored the first run for Sacramento with a solo home run. We would go to the 9th inning, Sacramento still down by a run. Mike Myers (no, not that one, or that one, either) was on the mound to wrap things up for San Diego. Todd Zeile gets a 0 out double, and is replaced by pinch runner Brady Anderson. Kazuhiro Sasaki replaces Myers on the mound. Didn't help. Guerrero walks to put runners at 1st & 2nd. Up next, pinch hitting for Ron Gant, is Ozzie Guillen (!). Needless to say, Guillen didn't do much, flying out for out #1. Petrick flied out for out #2. Up next was Ron Belliard. It was all up to Belliard now. Would he come through? YES. Base hit, and Brady Anderson scores from 2nd. Game tied at two. The game would go to the bottom of the 9th inning, still tied at 2. Jose Jimenez was on the mound for the Fish. Steve Finley grounded out for the first out of the inning. Dante Bichette singled. Pinch hitting for Sasaki, Ramon Martinez (no, not that one).
