2000 CFOD WORLD SERIES PREVIEW California Coneheads (108-54) vs. Cincinnati Rock (100-62) The two teams who battled it out for the 1999 championship return for a rematch. In 1999 the Coneheads won the world series in 6 games. What will the outcome be this time? Cincinnati led the Koufax division throughout most of the season before winding up in a season-ending tie with the Hillsborough Regulators. They wound up battling the Regulators in the MK conference finals, which they won in 6 games. In round 1 action, they defeated the Mantle division pennant winner San Francisco Shriners in 5 games. The score would remain that way until the 6th inning, when California had a big run. With 2 on and 0 outs, Mike Piazza singled, scoring a run. Then Juan Gonzales singled, scoring another run. Scott Rolen singled, scoring yet another run. Damian Easley didn't single, but hit a sacrifice fly, making it a 5-0 Coneheads game. Darrin Erstad capped off the inning with another single, giving California the commanding lead. Meanwhile, Randy Johnson was simply amazing, throwing a 4-hit shutout with a mind-boggling 19 strikeouts. California wins game 1 by a score of 6 to 0. In the top of the first, John Vander Wal homered off of Tim Hudson, his first earned run of the post-season. In the bottom of the 2nd, Jose Valentin tied things up with a solo homer of his own. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Mike Piazza singled, scoring Erstad from 2nd. 2-1 California. Cincinnati tied things up in the 5th when Troy Glaus hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the 5th inning, with the bases loaded and 0 outs, Colon walked Piazza, forcing in a run and ending Colon's day. With Williamson on the mound, he walked Valentin, driving in another run. 4-2 California. In the 6th inning, Dye hit a sacrifice fly, and Darin Erstad hit an single (going 5 for 5 on the day) for another run. Richard himself scored on Derek Bell's single. They later loaded the bases with Curt Schilling at bat. Pitcher up at bat. What typically happens here? Did someone say GRAND SLAM HOME RUN? Schilling takes Ortiz deep, de-loading the bases and put Cincinnati up 6-0. California never really got started in this game. California wins this one and they're 1 away from the CFOD championship. Randy Wolf didn't allow a hit until the 4th inning. Unfortunately for Wolf, that first hit was a solo homer by Troy Glaus. 1-0 Cincinnati. The Coneheads didn't blink, as in the top of the 5th, Wolf reached on base on error, and Darrin Erstad knocked them both in with a 2-run homer. 2-1 California. In the 7th inning, with 2 on and 1 out, Russ Johnson singled in a run, tying it up at 2. Millwood walked to load the bases, but Keith Foulke struck out White and Deshields to prevent any additional scores. We would go to the bottom of the 9th, with the score still tied at 2. Foulke still on the mound for California, entering his 3rd inning of work. Juan Encarnacion flied out. Out #1. Ben Molina singled. Pinch hitter JT Snow walked. 2 on, 1 out. But Craig Paquette struck out, and Devon White flied out to end the inning. We'd go to the 10th. In the top of the 10th, Armando Benitez was on the mound for Cincinnati. Frank Thomas came through for California, bashing a 2-run homer. 4-2 California. The Rock would need to answer in the bottom of the inning, and they'd have to do it against Mariano Rivera. First up was Delino DeShields, who hit a 0 out triple. Troy Glaus walked, and was replaced at first with pinch runner John Vander Wal. Dave Justice soaked up a couple outs by hitting into a double play, but Deshields scored anyways. 2 outs, California leads by 1. Now it was up to Tony Clark to save the day, but it was not to be. Clark grounded out, ending the game. California wins game four by a score of 4-3 in 10 innings, and are a game away from winning the CFOD World Series. Down 3 games to 1, there would be no tomorrow if they lost today. And they'd be facing Coneheads ace Randy Johnson. In the top of the first inning, Frank Thomas hit a solo home run off Al Leiter. In the bottom of the 1st, Troy Glaus hit a 2-run homer off Randy Johnson. In the second inning, with 2 on, Dave Justice hit a single, making it 3-1. Randy Johnson just didn't have his stuff today, and lasted only 1 2/3 innings. In the top of the 5th, Erstad tied things up with a 2-run shot. In the bottom of the 5th, Troy Glaus got a walk. With Justice at the plate, Glaus tried to steal second, but was thrown out. Justice doubled, and Tony Clark singled to put runners at first and third with 1 out. But Encarnacion and Molina struck out to end the inning without any runs scored. In the bottom of the 7th, Delino DeShields walked, but he was able to successfully steal second. He moved to third on a Glaus groundout. David Justice grounded to Valentin, who threw home to get DeShields .. or at least try to. DeShields evades the tag and reaches home safely. Cincinnati takes the 4-3 lead. We move now to the top of the 9th, with the Coneheads down by a run, and Armando Benitez was on the mound to close it out for Cincinnati. First runner up, Damian Easley, got a walk. Benitez then struck out pinch hitter Burkhart and Jose Valentin. 2 outs. Up next was Erstad. A double would tie it, a homer would put the Coneheads ahead. The result? Erstad never got to complete the at bat. Easley tried to steal second, but was thrown out, ending the inning and the game. Cincinnati defeats Randy Johnson and the coneheads by a 4-3 score, and remain alive in the series. In the top of the 2nd, with runners at first and third, Ben Molina singled, driving in the first run of the game. In the top of the 3rd, John Vander Wal walked, and Troy Glaus drove them both in with a 2-run blast. Coneheads starter Tim Hudson would last just 5 innings. In the 6th inning, with runners at 1st & 3rd, Derek Bell hit into a double play, but with 0 outs JT Snow was able to score from 3rd. 4-0 Rock. But you can never count California out. In the bottom of the 6th, they put their first runs of the game on the board with a 2-run blast by Frank Thomas. 4-2 Rock. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Erstad hit an RBI single. 4-3 Rock. In the top of the 8th, against Mariano Rivera, the Rock got a little more breathing room when Shawon Dunston doubled and scored on Craig Paquette's single. We move now to the bottom of the 9th, with the Coneheads down 5-3. Lou Pote was on the mound for Cincinnati. The first batter, pinch hitter Marcus Jensen, grounded out. The second batter, Sammy Stewart, flied out. The last batter, Darin Erstad, grounded out. Cincinnati hangs on to win game six by a score of 5-3. Once down 3 games to 1, Cincinnati has defeated the Coneheads two best pitchers to force a game seven. This one, for all the marbles. After 162 regular season games and umpteen rounds of playoffs, the 2000 CFOD season has been reduced to one game: Game seven of the world series. After the last out, a champion will be crowned. Before we could get to the last out, we had to have a first pitch. And Curt Schilling wishes he could have had his first pitch back, as Shannon Stewart took him deep in the 1st. 1-0 Coneheads. The Rock would score their first run of the game in the 5th, when Vander Wal doubled with Ben Molina at first, and Molina was able to putter around the bases to score. After 5 innings, both of these teams were just getting warmed up. In the 6th inning, with 2 outs, Shawon Dunston bashed a solo shot. Cincinnati takes the 2-1 lead. The next batter, Derek Bell, makes it back-to-back, smacking another shot over the wall. 3-1 Cincinnati. Not to be outdone, in the bottom of the 7th, Jose Valentin smacked a solo homer to make it 3-2. Damian Easley hit another solo home run to tie the game back up at 3. Just 2 innings left in regulation. In the top of the 8th inning, with Paul Wilson the mound for California, the Rock threw down the gauntlet. Among all playoff teams, the Coneheads Randy Johnson was (almost) unbeatable, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in 4 starts. But, the MVP should come from the winning team, and the player who most personifies the Rock's success this post-season is 3rd starter Curt Schilling, who went 3-0 in 4 starts (his only no decision?
