NOTES: The Austin Longhorns ended their season on a 5-game losing streak, losing their last game with Tom Glavine on the mound. They ended the season tied with the Avila Dragons, who bested them 8-4 in regular season play. Thus, the Dragons win the tiebreaker, and enter the post-season as the GT conference wildcard. The playoffs will be structured as follows: Round 0: (5) Springfield Isotopes (League Wildcard #2) vs. (4) Point Lomas Friars (League Wildcard #1) (HFA) Round 1: (1) California Kamados (Aaron division winner, HFA) vs. Round 0 winner (2) Madison Muckrakers (Paige division winner, HFA) vs. (3) Manhatten Beach Mashers (AP Conf. Wildcard) (1) Alphaville Cautions (Tiant division winner) vs. BYE (2) Encinitas Surfers (Gehrig division winner, HFA) vs. (3) Avila Dragons (GT Conf. Wildcard) Alphaville wins its first pennant as a franchise in 8 years, and its 100 wins is easily a franchise record. Speaking of franchise bests, the California Kamados tie the league mark for wins, set by them last year with 118 victories. The Muckrakers capture their third straight pennant, while the Surfers capture their 2nd straight pennant. The Minutemen, Trout, Investigators and Commanders are all part of the 95 loss club. With the new rules on #1 picks, the top priority goes to teams who have been out of the playoffs and/or without a #1 pick the longest. The Investigators made the playoffs in 1997, the Trout and Minutemen made the playoffs in 1991, and the Commanders last made the playoffs in 1990 when they were the Hurdlers. With these tiebreakers in place, the Commanders get the #1 pick, followed by the Minutemen and Trout, and the Investigators get the #4 overall pick. Having just missed the playoffs, the Austin Longhorns wind up with the #5 overall pick. In records news, the Cavaliers' Pedro Martinez shattered Randy Johnson's 1995 mark for strikeouts, logging an incredible 396 K's during the year. Derek Lowe of the Kamados shattered Tim Burke's 1990 saves record, logging 55 saves for the year. The Dragons set new team records for batting average with .307, on base average with .383, slugging with .517, runs with 1085, and RBI with 1059 (hooray for Coors Field!) The Kamados tied the record for most wins with 118 and broke the record for team saves with 71. The Cavaliers set a new record for most pitching strikeouts with 1340. The Black Sox tied an infamous record for fewest complete games with just 1. I will send out playoff information shortly. Thanks for another great season!
