CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW - ROUND 0 Point Lomas Friars (94-68, #1 league wildcard) vs. Springfield Isotopes (90-72, #2 league wildcard) In a highly competitive playoff race, the Friars acquired their way to the playoffs, nabbing Kevin Millwood, Trevor Hoffman and Pete Harnisch on their way to a league wildcard. Millwood went 8-3 with a 2.59 ERA with the team (and won 16 games overall). Orel Hershiser won 15 with a 3.73 ERA, while Ramiro Mendoza went 8-4 with a 3.42 ERA. Rick Aguilera saved 20 games, and Hoffman won 7 games in 13 relief appearances. Greg Vaughn was the big bat, smacking 41 home rusn with 130 RBI. Jason Giambi added 34 home runs, 116 runs scored and 113 RBI. Luis Gonzalez scored 132 runs, and catcher Dave Nilsson hit 30 home runs with 90 RBI and a .327 average. Ed Sprague and Jay Bell each smacked 24 home runs with over 100 RBI. Springfield is no stranger to the post-season, making their 7th post-season appearance in 8 seasons. Tony Clark hit 47 home runs with 155 RBI, and Bernie Williams hit .369 with 25 home runs and 165 runs scored. Barry Bonds was injured for 1/3 of the season, but still managed to hit 40 home runs with 90 runs scored and 111 RBI. Jose Canseco added 28 home runs and 73 RBI. Brian Moehler and Joe Mays each won 12 games in 32 starts, and relievers Anthony Telford and Tim Crabtree won 8 games in relief. Closer Doug Jones saved 33 games. The first game of the 1999 post-season featured a duel between aces. In the top of the 1st, Bernie Williams walked, moved to 3rd on a double by Barry Bonds, and scored on a groundout by Tony Clark for a quick 1-0 Springfield lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, the bases were loaded with 2 outs, and Friars pitcher Kevin Millwood was at the plate. Millwood was acquired for his pitching, but showed he was good with a bat too, smacking a 2-run single. 2-1 Friars. Point Lomas added another run in the 3rd on a Greg Vaughn sacrifice fly. In the 4th inning, Mark Kotsay closed the gap to 1 with a solo home run. In the top of the 6th, Barry Bonds tied it up at 3 with a solo home run of his own. The game remained 3-3 heading into the 9th inning. Doug Johns was pitching for Point Lomas in the top of the 9th. First batter up, pinch hitter Chad Curtis, popped out. As did Miguel Tejada. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Kelly Stinnett grounded out, keeping the game tied at 3 heading into the bottom of the 9th. On the pitcher's mound in the bottom of the 9th for Springfield was Terry Adams. Jay Bell got a leadoff walk, then pinch hitter Matt Lawton singled, putting runners at first and second. Adams was pulled, and closer Doug Jones came on in relief. Darryl Hamilton put down the sacrifice bunt, advancing the runners with only 1 out on the board. Luis Gonzalez was walked to load the bases. At bat was Dave Nilsson. A single or even a fly out would win the game for Point Lomas. A double play would send the game into extra innings. On a 1-1 pitch, Nilsson hit a ground ball between first and second. In the bottom of the 4th the Friars added to their lead when Darryl Hamilton doubled, moved to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on a Gonzalez sacrifice fly. 3-0 Friars. The game remained 3-0 heading into the top of the 8th. Kevin Tapani was working on a shutout. Unfortunately for Point Lomas, Tapani started to run out of gas, giving up a 0 out double to Kevin Orie, who then scored on a base hit by Jose Canseco. 3-1 Friars. After Tapani allowed Barry Bonds on base with 2 outs, Friars closer Trevor Hoffman replaced Tapani. Hoffman failed in the clutch, giving up a 2 out, 2 RBI bases clearing double to Tony Clark. 3-3 ballgame. Neither side would score in the 9th, so the game would go into extra innings. Tony Clark hit a sacrifice fly to put Springfield on the board first, but that's all they'd made of that opportunity. The Isotopes struck again in the 4th, when with runners at first and third, Mark Kotsay hit an infield grounder, and Ed Sprague attempted to get Pokey Reese out at home. He didn't succeed. Another Isotopes run scored, and Springfield was up 2-0 after 4. In the 5th inning, Pat Rapp gave up a single to Jay Bell, then Pete Harnisch got on base thanks to an error by Tony Clark. Curt Leskanic came on in relief, but it wasn't much ehlp. Darryl Hamilton smacked a bases clearing triple, tying the game up at 2. Luis Gonzalez singled, scoring another runner to give the Friars the 3-2 lead. After a Dave Nilsson single, Jason Giambi went deep, smashing a 3-run home run to put Point Lomas up 6-2. The Friars went crazy after that, scoring 8 more runs in the next 3 innings to put the game well out of reach.
