CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW - ROUND 1 Madison Muckrakers (95-67, Paige division champ) vs. Manhatten Beach Mashers (101-61, AP conference wildcard) The Muckrakers captured their third pennant in a row in 1999. Manny Ramirez had a stellar season, hitting 44 home runs with a .339 average, 119 runs scored and 130 RBI. Ivan Rodriguez hit 30 home runs with 88 RBI, while Mark Grace had a .374 on base average and 119 runs scored. Mark McLemore added a .294 average, 74 runs scored and 74 RBI, and Andruw Jones hit 21 home runs with 89 runs scored. Pedro Astacio won 19 games with a 3.22 ERA. Eric Milton won 13 games with a 3.79 ERA, and Mike Sirotka won 11. Closer John Wetteland won 9 games and saved another 40 with a 2.66 ERA. Madison added an insurance run in the third to put them up by 3, and added yet another insurance run in the 9th. Mike Sirotka was working on a complete game shutout against the Mashers with a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 9th. The first batter, Robin Ventura, smashed a ball towards Dave Hansen, who misplayed the throw to first. Error to the third baseman, and Ventura wound up at second base. Damon Buford was plunked by the next pitch, putting runners on first and second with 0 outs. With the end of the rotation facing each other, game four would determine which team had momentum heading into the second half of the series. In the first inning, David Wells got tagged, giving up a pair of 2-run home runs to Mark McGwire and Mike Sweeney. 4-0 Mashers. Madison chipped away at the lead, scoring in the third on an Ivan Rodriguez double and again in the 4th on a solo home run by Andruw Jones. 4-2 Mashers. In the top of the 6th inning, Madison loaded the bases to bring up Mark McLemore. McLemore's eye prevailed, drawing the walk to force in a run. 4-3 Mashers. The next batter, Dave Magadan, doubled, scoring 2 more runs to put the Muckrakers ahead 5-4. A Mark Clayton insurance run made it 6-4 Muckrakers. Manhatten Beach closed the gap to 1 when Armando Rios doubled in a run. Then, in the 8th, with a runner on, Mark McGwire did what he does best, smacking the ball out of the park. 2-run home run, and the Mashers found themselves back on top 7-6. The Mashers would add 2 more insurance runs to put themselves up 9-6 heading into the top of the 9th inning. Matt Mantei was pitching for the Mashers in the top of the 9th, trying to protect a 3 run lead. Pinch hitter Chili Davis singled. Mantei was pulled in favor of closer Billy Wagner. Ricky Gutierrez grounded out, moving Davis to 2nd. Marvin Benard grounded out, moving Davis to 3rd. And with 2 outs, Wagner got Ivan Rodriguez to pop out, ending the game. The Muckrakers added an insurance run in the 4th (in part due to Juan Guzman's fielding error, one of 5 errors for the Mashers today) and another in the 6th to put the score at 7-4 in the Muckrakers favor. In the bottom of the 6th, the Mashers tied it up all up with a 3-run blast by Mark McGwire, his 2nd home run of the game. Billy Wagner was pitching for the Mashers. Wagner hit the leadoff batter and gave up a single to Ricky Gutierrez to put 2 on with 0 outs. Marvin Benard singled, scoring a run to tie the game up at 8. Wagner continued to struggle, loading the bases to bring up Manny Ramirez. Ramirez was clutch, smacking a single up the middle to score 2 more runners to give Madison the 10-8 lead. Andruw Jones hit a sacrifice fly to give Madison a 3-run lead. On the mound for the first time this playoffs in the bottom of the 9th with a 3 run lead was Madison closer John Wetteland. In the top of the third, the Mashers loaded the bases, and scored their first run of the game when Jeromy Burnitz walked, forcing in a run. In the top of the 4th, with 2 on and 1 out, Terry Shumpert hit a sacrifice fly, cutting the Muckrakers lead to 1. In the 5th, Manhatten Beach pulled ahead on back to back solo home runs by Benny Agbayani and Jeromy Burnitz. 4-3 Mashers. In the bottom of the inning, Mark McLemore walked, moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Eric Milton, moved to third on a Hampton wild pitch, and scored when Stan Javier grounded a ball to Robin Ventura, who misplayed it for the error. 4-4 tie ball game. In the top of the 6th, the Mashers pulled ahead when Jeromy Burnitz was once again issued a bases loaded walk, forcing in a run. 5-4 Manhatten Beach. In the bottom of the inning, it was Madison's turn to load the bases, and Hampton was pulled in favor of Matt Mantei to face Royce Clayton. Clayton's batting eye prevailed, getting the walk to force in a run to tie it up at 5. Next up was Mark McLemore. McLemore was clutch, smacking a base hit to score 2 runners to put the Muckrakers up 7-5. In the top of the 7th, Geoff Jenkins hit a leadoff solo home run to cut the Madison lead to 1. In the bottom of the inning, Madison loaded the bases again to once again bring Royce Clayton to the plate. Clayton came through yet again, smashing a bases clearing double to put Madison up 10-6. An 8th inning Manny Ramirez 2-run homer gave the Muckrakers a 6 run advantage heading into the top of the 9th. Onan Masaoka was working in his 2nd inning of relief for the Muckrakers, just 3 outs away from the conference finals with his team up 12-6. Dave Berg flied out for out #1. Doug Glanville singled, and Terry Shumpert smacked a 2-run home run to close the lead to 4. Mike Sweeney lined out to put 2 outs up. Mark McGwire was issued a 2-out walk. Next to the plate was Craig Paquette, and Muckrakers closer John Wetteland came on board. Wetteland did what he does best, striking out Paquette to end the game. The Muckrakers defeat the Mashers 12-8 in game 6, and advance to the AP conference finals.
