CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW - ROUND 0 Encinitas Surfers (88-74, Gehrig division winner) vs. Avila Dragons (89-73, GT conference wildcard) The Surfers led the Gehrig division for much of the year and clinched it in the final week of the season. Ellis Burks proved to be the man in the middle, hitting 44 home runs, 91 runs scored and 110 RBI. Matt Stairs and Steve Finley each blasted 36 home runs with 92 runs scored and 100+ RBI. Tony Fernandez sported a .393 on base average with 109 runs scored, and BJ Surhoff had 116 runs scored and 20 home runs. Kevin Brown went 17-9 with a 4.11 ERA, and Greg Maddux was 16-9 with a 4.42 ERA. Dave Mlicki followed up with 15 wins and the 3rd amigo Mike Mussina won 12. Closer Billy Koch saved 40 games. The Dragons were out of the playoff runnings until the final game of the season, when they entered as the GT conference wildcard via tiebreaker. Their 1085 runs scored was the most ever seen in the CDBL. Alex Rodriguez hit 59 home runs with 126 runs scored and 143 RBI, and Harold Baines hit 32 home runs with 134 RBI. Brady Anderson hit 35 home runs, stole 45 bases, and scored 131 runs. Johnny Damon swiped 39 bases, hit 24 home runs, scored 119 runs, and drove in 103. The Dragons won their games via hitting, as the team ERA of 5.87 was easily a league record for highest ERA by a playoff bound pitching staff. Roger Clemens finished 12-9 with a 5.56 ERA. Closer Keith Foulke was great, winning 10 games and saving another 32 while posting a respectable 2.53 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Dragons edged the Surfers 5 games to 4. Encinitas has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dragons (Clemens) at Surfers (Brown). As the top of the rotation faced each other again, the Dragons had a chance to advance to the conference finals on their home turf. The Surfers were looking to kick the series back to their own home turf. In the bottom of the 2nd, after Terry Steinbach singled, Ken Caminiti reached base on a fielding error by David Segui. Alex Arias hit a 1-out RBI single, and Roger Clemens hit an RBI ground out to make it 2-0 Avila (both runs unearned). As it will happen in Coors Field, the Surfers tied it up in the 3rd inning on back to back solo home runs by Charles Johnson and Jose Hernandez. 2-2 ballgame. In the 5th inning, the Dragons scored 3 more runs on doubles by Harold Baines, Alex Rodriguez and a Caminiti RBI single. An insurance run in the 7th made it 6-2 Avila. Down 4 runs in the top of the 8th, the Surfers gave themselves a scoring opportunity by loading the bases with 2 outs. Clemens and Rudy Seanez had already pitched in the inning, and closer Keith Foulke was brought on to bring things in. The first batter Foulke faced, Steve Finley, got the walk, forcing in Scott Hattenberg. 6-3 Avila. Next batter, David Segui, came through in the clutch, smashing a grand slam home run. Surfers were now up 7-6. The Surfers added an insurance run of their own in the top of the 9th. Avila would go into the bottom of the 9th down by 2 runs. Surfers closer Billy Koch was on the mound. First batter up, Alex Rodriguez, grounded out. Johnny Damon smacked a triple with 1 out. The next batter, Jim Edmonds, struck out. With 2 outs, the tying run, Mike Redmond, was at the plate. Redmond kept the game alive, doubling Damon in to cut the Surfers lead to 1. Now representing the series-clinching run was Olmedo Saenz. Would Saenz be able to send Avila on on their home turf? Not this year. Saenz grounded out to end the game. The Surfers come from behind to win game 5 by a score of 8-7, and move the series back to their home turf.
