Jay Bell is hitting .368 with a .520 on base average and 5 runs scored in 6 games. Darryl Hamilton has 6 runs scored and a .517 on base average. With 2 of the top of ERA leaders in the league facing each other, you'd know that the first half of the game would be a pitching duel. The Kamadoes scored in the 2nd on a throwing error by Greg Vaughn, and the Friars scored in the 6th on a throwing error by Derek Jeter. Kevin Millwood would throw 6 innings, giving up just 1 unearned run, and Omar Daal would throw 7 innings, giving up just 1 unearned run. In the bottom of the 7th, off reliever Doug Johns, Mike Stanley smacked a 2-run home run. 3-1 Kamados. In the top of the 8th, Kamados closer supreme Derek Lowe came on with an ample lead. Lowe must have had the playoff jitters, because with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Lowe proceeded to give up a 2-RBI single from Lou Merloni to tie the game at 3, another RBI single from Jason Giambi to give the Friars the 4-3 lead, then yet another RBI single from Dave Nilsson for a 5-3 Friars lead. The game remained 5-3 Friars heading into the bottom of the 9th. Friars closer supreme Trevor Hoffman was pitching, protecting a 2-run lead. Hoffman must have had the same jitters, as he gave up 2 singles, then pinch hitter Mike Darr drove in a run with a base hit, then Brent Mayne tied it up with another single. 5-5 ballgame, 0 outs. Hoffman threw a wild pitch then walked Orlando Palmeiro to load the bases with 0 outs. Hoffman would need to put up a clutch performance to get out of this, but it was not to be. Jason Giambi was walked to force in a run, and Matt Lawton was hit by a pitch, making it 2-0 Point Lomas. In the 2nd inning, Tony Womack singled, moved to third on a Greg Vaughn groundout, then scored when Omar Daal balked. 3-0 Point Lomas. California cut into the Friars lead in the third inning. Omar Daal hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a Derek Jeter groundout. With 2 outs, Erubiel Durazo doubled, scoring Daal. Brian Daubach singled, scoring Durazo and made it a 3-2 Friars contest. In the bottom of the third, Jay Bell walked, but took himself out of the inning when he was caught stealing. Jorge Fabregas followed up with a single. With 2 outs, Matt Lawton singled, putting 2 runners on base. Omar Daal was done, having pitched just 2 2/3 innings. Sean Lowe came on in relief, and gave up an RBI single to Russ Davis and threw a wild pitch to allow another run to score to give Point Lomas the 5-2 lead. Meanwhile, Kevin Millwood threw 7 innings, giving up just the 2 runs in the third inning. Doug Johns came on to pitch a scoreless 8th, and Trevor Hoffman came on board in the top of the 9th with a 3-run lead. First batter up, Randy Velarde, singled. But then Hoffman proceeded to strike out Jeffrey Hammonds, Darryl Strawberry and Derek Jeter to close out the game. Point Lomas' big 2 acquisitions of Kevin Millwood and Trevor Hoffman help the Friars win game 5 by a score of 5-2 to send the series back to California.
