CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW - WORLD SERIES California Kamados (118-44, Aaron division winner, 4-2 over Friars in round 1, 4-1 over Muckrakers in AP Conf Finals) vs. Avila Dragons (89-73, GT conference wildcard, 4-2 over Surfers in round 1, 4-2 over Cautions in GT Conf Finals) This world series features a battle between the two 1993 CDBL expansion teams. The team with the best regular season record in the playoffs who qualified for the playoffs first vs. the team with the worst regular season record in the playoffs who qualified for the playoffs on the last day of the season. Each has captured the CDBL championship before, and this series will determine who gets championship #2. The Kamados posted a league-tying record 118 wins in the regular season on their way to the Aaron division pennant, then bested the upstart Friars in 6 games in their round 1 series and then Paige division champ Madison in 5 games in the AP conference finals. Sean Casey is hitting .467 with 4 home runs, 7 runs scored and 12 RBI, while Brian Daubach is hitting .400 with 8 RBI. Derek Jeter has 11 runs scored and 6 RBI in 11 games. Randy Velarde has a .435 on base average with 6 runs scored. The bullpen has been very strong, with Sean Lowe, John Rocker, Mike Venafro and Bob Wells combining for 15 1/3 innings with an ERA of 0.00. Derek Lowe is a couple of bad pitches away from a 0.00 ERA as well (current 4.91), but has 2 wins and 2 saves to his credit. Avila captured the GT conference wildcard on the last day of the season, then outscored the Encinitas Surfers in 6 games in their round 1 matchup and defeated the Tiant division champ Cautions in 6 games in the GT conference finals. Alex Rodriguez has been strong at the plate, hitting 9 home runs, 12 runs scored and 20 RBI in 12 games. Brady Anderson is hitting .395 with 10 runs scored and 10 RBI, while Harold Baines as a .405 on base average and 12 runs scored. Johnny Damon is hitting .320 with 11 runs scored, and Alex Arias is hitting .406 with 8 RBI. Orlando Hernandez is 3-0 in 4 starts, and Roger Clemens is 2-1 in 4 starts with a 3.67 ERA. Keith Foulke has 4 saves in 6 games. In 4 regular season games, the teams battled to a 2-2 tie. California has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dragons (Clemens) at Kamados (Daal). Derek Jeter came prepared for the playoffs, hitting the first Orlando Hernandez pitch out of the park for a home run. 1-0 California. The Kamados scored 2 more in the 5th on a Randy Velarde solo home run and an Erubiel Durazo RBI single. 2-0 Kamados after 5. Avila had a chance to score in the 6th inning. With runners at first and third and 1 out, Ken Caminiti tried to hit a sacrifice fly, but Matt Mieske couldn't outrun Ray Lankford, who threw him out at home. Still 3-0 Kamados. California added an insurance run in the 8th for a 4-0 lead. Meanwhile, California starter Jamie Moyer was working on a complete game shutout. After Mo Vaughn flied out, Moyer allowed 2 runners on base, putting Redmond at third and Terry Steinbach at 2nd on a single and a double. Olmedo Sanez hit a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-1 with 2 outs. Up next was Alex Rodriguez. The Kamados left Moyer in there to go for the complete game, and today that was a good choice. Moyer got Rodriguez to fly out to center, ending the game. California wins game 2 by a score of 4-1. GAME THREE - Kamados (Elarton) at Dragons (Olivares). Taking advantage of the rarefied air of Coors field, California's Sean Casey got the Kamados off to a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning via a 3-run home run. In the 4th, California made it 4-0 on a Randy Velarde solo home run. 4 more Kamado runs in the 5th and another 2 in the 7th put the game well out of reach. Despite scoring 5 runs in the last 2 innings, Avila would never come close to threatening. California wins game 3 by a score of 11-5, and are a win away from repeating as CDBL champions. The last game of the season at Coors field, the Dragons were hoping it would end in a victory for them and a continuation of the series. For California, it was their 2nd chance at clinching the CDBL championship. In the top of the 1st, Derek Jeter singled after previously hitting a foul popup that Olmedo Saenz misplayed. Roger Clemens tried to throw Jeter out, but the ball sailed past first, allowing Jeter to move to 2nd. Sean Casey singled, scoring Jeter, and with 2 outs, Cal Ripken singled in Casey. 2 unearned runs made it 2-0 California after the first inning. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, with 2 outs and 2 on, FP Santangelo doubled, scoring 2 runs to tie the game up at 1. Roger Clemens gave himself the lead with a base hit, scoring Santangelo. 3-2 Avila after 2. Avila padded their lead in the 6th with an RBI single by Saenz and a sacrifice fly from Alex Rodriguez. 5-2 Dragons after 6. California cut the lead to 2 runs in the 7th with a Derek Jeter solo home run. The Dragons extended right back to 3 runs in the 8th when FP Santangelo was issued a bases loaded walk. 6-3 Dragons heading into the top of the 9th. Rudy Saenez was pitching for the Dragons, trying to close out the game on his home turf. Brent Mayne grounded out for out #1. Orlando Palmeiro singled, after which closer Keith Foulke came on in relief. Randy Velarde smacked an 0-2 pitch over the wall. 2-run home run, and suddenly the Dragons were up by only 1 run. Scott Rolen popped out to put 2 outs on the board. Now it was up to Derek Jeter. A repeat of his 7th inning home run would tie the game up. But it was not to be. Jeter popped out to Alex Rodriguez, ending the game. Avila hangs on to win game 5 by a score of 6-5, and send the series back to California for the conclusion of the world series.
