1998 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Matchup Seattle Decaf (87-75, #2 League Wildcard) vs. California Kamados (118-44, Aaron Division Winner) This round 1 matchup features the best team at the beginning of the season vs. the best team at the end of the season. Seattle roared out to a 10-0 record at the beginning of the season, faded a bit, then came back strong to clinch the last wildcard spot on the final day of the season. Ron Coomer hit 26 home runs with 86 RBI, and Derek Bell had 20 home runs and 90 RBI. Fernando Vina had a .378 on base average, 25 stolen bases and 102 runs scored. Mid-season acquisitions Raul Mondesi and Tony Gwynn combined for 28 home runs, 98 runs scored and 113 RBI in a little over 700 at bats. Kevin Millwood finished the season with a 15-8 record and a 3.65 ERA, and Kevin Tapani went 10-7 with a 4.18 ERA. Closer Mike Jackson was phenomenal, leading the league in saves with 45 and 2.44 ERA. California started strong and sported the league's best record for most of the season on their way to winning the Aaron division pennant. Scott Rolen hit 33 home runs with 128 runs scored and 129 RBI, and Eric Davis hit .300 with 27 home runs and 117 RBI. Derek Jeter stole 27 bases and scored 126 runs, while Jose Offerman had a .383 on base average and 121 runs scored. Early season acquisition Mo Vaughn hit 34 home runs with the team and finished with a total season record of 41 home runs, 115 runs scored and 138 RBI. Jamie Moyer won 20 games with a 3.00 ERA, and Omar Daal went 19-3 with a 2.04 ERA. Bartolo Colon and Steve Woodard combined to win 26 games between them. Closer Mike Williams saved 33 games, won another 7 with a 1.51 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Kamados won the matchup 6 games to 3. California has home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Decaf (Millwood) at Kamados (Moyer). In the opening game of their first round series, the Kamados scored first in the first inning on their home turf when Mark Whiten doubled and was driven in by Eric Davis. In the 2nd inning, Brian McRae hit leadoff solo home run for a 2-0 California lead. The Decaf were not going to lie down. In the top of the 3rd, Gerald Williams doubled and moved to third on a Feranando Vina single. Vina made it runners on 2nd & 3rd with a stolen base. With Tony Batista at the plate, Batista hit a ball towards Mo Vaughn, who bobbled it. Runner scores, and the Kamados lead is 1. Derek Bell hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Vina and tying the game up at 2 (with 2 unearned runs by the Decaf). The game remained 2-2 heading into the 8th inning. In the top of the 8th, Batista hit a 1 out double, and scored on a single by Bell. The Decaf would have a chance to win it in the bottom of the 9th, leading 3 runs to 2. Seattle closer Mike Jackson was on the mound in the bottom of the 9th with a 1-run lead and a chance to take home field advantage away from the Kamados. Leadoff hitter Jose Offerman walked. Jackson balked, sending Offerman to 2nd. Jackson's mistake was rectified, as Offerman was thrown out attempting to steal 3rd. With 1 out, Eric Davis struck out. Now it was up to Mo Vaughn, who had a key error that allowed 2 unearned runs in the 3rd inning. Would Vaughn be able to attone for his previous gaffe? Yes! Vaughn took Jackson deep. Solo home run, and the game was tied at 3. After Rolen lined out to center, the game would head into extra innings. In the 11th inning, Bell lined a single to center field. With 1 out, Tony Gwynn took reliever Scott Elarton deep. 2-run home run, and the Decaf were up 5-3. The Kamados would go into the bottom of the 11th with a 2-run deficit. Mike Jackson was still on the mound for the Decaf, having pitched a scoreless 10th. Roberto Petagine pinch hit for Elarton, and hit an infield fly out. Kevin Sefcik hit a single, putting the tying run at the plate. Carlos Reyes came on in relief. Jose Offerman was at bat, and his grounder got Sefcik out at second, but Offerman made it to first in time. 2 outs, Kamados down by 2, with Eric Davis at the plate. Would Davis be a late inning hero like Mo Vaughn was in the 9th? Not today. Davis grounded out, ending the game. The Decaf upset the Kamados in game 1 and take the game by a score of 5-3. Calfornia had a chance to move out big by loading the bases in the bottom of the 2nd with 0 outs, but Brent Mayne struck out and Derek Jeter grounded into a double play to end the inning with Seattle still up 1-0. California finally put some runs on the board in the 4th, when Glenallen Hill hit a 2-run home run off of Kevin Tapani. Seattle tied it up in the top of the 8th when they loaded the bases, and Derek Bell hit a 1 out groundout to 2nd, forcing in a run and tying it up at 2. California had their own bases loaded situation in the bottom of the inning, and Glenallen Hill grounded out to third, forcing in a run. 3-2 California heading into the 9th inning. Mike Williams was pitching for the Kamados, just 3 outs away from their first post-season win of the year. First batter, Quinton McCracken, struck out. Jeff Reed grounded out. With 2 outs, it was up to Ron Coomer. Coomer made the most he could of the situation, eeking out an infield single. Representing the go-ahead run at the plate was Raul Monedesi, getting his first at bat of the post-season. In this battle of hitter vs. pitcher, it was closer Mike Williams who won out. In the 2nd inning, with 2 on, McRae hit an RBI single, Eric Davis an RBI double and Mo Vaughn an RBI ground out to make it 6-0 California. Quinton McCracken doubled in a run in the 4th, but another 3 Kamados runs in the 6th put the game away for good. With the game 12-3 Calfornia in the top of the 9th, pitcher David Weathers got Fernando Vina to fly out for the final out of the series. The Decaf put up an epic fight, but it is the Kamados that win the series and move on to the AP conference finals.
