1998 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Matchup Point Lomas Friars (89-73, AP Confernce Wildcard) vs. Madison Muckrakers (102-60, Paige Division Winner) The Friars remained in the thick of the playoff race for most of the season before finally nabbing the AP conference wildcard. Greg Vaughn had a massive season, hitting 66 home runs with 132 runs scored and 152 RBI. Jason Giambi hit .320 with 28 home runs, 99 runs scored and 100 RBI, while Eric Young had a .291 average with 66 runs scored and 40 stolen bases. Mark Gardner was their winning-est pitcher, going 12-10 with a 3.61 ERA. Ramrio Mendoza finished with a 9-5 record and a 3.84 ERA. Closer Ricardo Rincon was stellar, saving 31 games with a 2.40 ERA. The Muckrakers were comfortably in control of the Paige division for much of the season. Manny Ramirz was the key player in the lineup, hitting 48 home runs with 112 runs scored and 132 RBI. Andruw Jones wasn't bad either, hitting 43 home runs with 122 RBI. Catcher Ivan Rodriguez slugged .457 with 19 home runs and 98 RBI, and Scott Brosius added 18 homers and 85 runs and 85 RBI. David Wells went 17-8 with a 2.73 ERA, and Rolando Arroyo went 18-6 with a 3.42 ERA. Tim Wakefield won 14 games. Closer Billy Taylor saved 37 games, won 10 of them and sported a 1.98 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Friars won the regular season series 5 games to 4. Madison has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Friars (Gardner) at Muckrakers (Arrojo). Game one saw both teams sizing each other up. In the top of the 2nd with a runner on, Ken Caminiti smacked a 2-run shot. In the bottom of the inning with a runner on, Andruw Jones hit a 2-run dinger. 2-2 ballgame after 2. In the 3rd, Madison gained the lead when Ivan Rodriguez grounded out to short with runners at 2nd and third, allowing Marvin Benard to score. 3-2 Muckrakers. In the 6th inning the Friars had a chance to score big, loading the bases with 0 outs. Ken Caminiti drove in his 3rd run of the day with a bases loaded walk. But Bernard Gilkey killed the rally with a double play, and Jay Bell grounded out to end the inning. 3-3 after 5 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the 6th, Manny Ramirez walked, moved to second on a Scott Brosius ground out, and scored on a single by Mark McLemore. 4-3 Madison after 6. In the 7th inning, Jesse Orosco was pitching for the Muckrakers. Matt Franco walked, bringing up pinch hitter Bill Mueller. Mueller smashed a double down the first base line, driving in Franco ... and then Mueller was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Jeff King doubled and scored on a single by Lenny Webster, giving Point Lomas the 5-4 lead ... but would Mueller's running mis-step come back to haunt them? The game remained 5-4 in the Friars' favor heading into the bottom of the 9th. Point Lomas closer Ricardo Rincon was working on his 3rd inning of the game. First batter up, pinch hitter Sean Berry, singled. Felipe Crespo struck out. Jon Zuber walked, putting 2 on with 1 out. Rick Aguilera replaced Rincon on the pitcher's mound. Ivan Rodrigeuz hit a fly out to put 2 outs on the board. With 2 on and 2 out and the game on the line, it was up to Manny Ramirez. Would Ramirez come through? Not in game one. Ramirez struck out, ending the game. Point Lomas wins game 1 by a score of 5-4. Jones would then steal 3rd and score on a single by Royce Clayton. With 2 outs and 2 on, Wally Joyner would give Madison the 3-2 lead with an RBI single. The Muckrakers added to their lead in the 3rd when Manny Ramirez reached first on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by Mark McLemore. 2 more runs in the 5th put the game out of reach for the Friars. David Wells gave the bullpen the night off, finishing with a 6-hit complete game. Madison wins game 2 by a score of 6-2, and ties up the series.
