1998 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Matchup Alphaville Cautions (95-67, GT Conference Wildcard) vs. Encinitas Surfers (92-70, Gehrig Division Winner) The Alphaville rebuilding plan is well ahead of schedule, as they rode a strong pitching staff to the GT conference wildcard. Shane Andrews was their big bat in the middle, hitting 29 home runs with 88 RBI. Rusty Greer hit .284 with 102 runs scored, and Shannon Stewart had a .363 on base average, 100 runs scored and 54 stolen bases. Rookie Kerry Wood went 16-3 with a 2.45 ERA, Wilson Alvarez was 12-9 with a 3.75 ERA, and Kent Bottenfield was 11-7 with a 3.91 ERA. Closer Danny Graves saved 27 games, won another 12, and sported a 2.34 ERA. The team ERA overall was 3.52, good enough for 2nd overall in the majors. The Surfers battled a few competitors before eventually winning the Gehrig division pennant. Andres Galarraga had a big year, smacking 42 home runs with 111 runs scored and 130 RBI. Ellis Burks had 27 home runs and 108 RBI, while Tony Fernandez had a .390 on base average, 26 stolen bases and 101 runs scored. Fellow table setter Quilvio Veras had a .371 on base average with 34 stolen bases and 96 runs scored. Greg Maddux went 18-8 with a 2.53 ERA, Kevin Brown won 16 with a 3.12 ERA, and Mike Mussina went 14-8 with a 3.60 ERA. Mike Timlin won 10 games in relief with 9 saves and a 2.09 ERA, and Doug Brocail saved 28. In 9 regular season games, the Surfers won the regular season series 7 games to 2. It was the rookie phenom Kerry Wood against the established veteran Greg Maddux. In the bottom of the first, Tony Fernandez drove in Quilvio Veras with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andres Galarraga. The Surfers would score more, but 1 run was all Maddux needed as he put on a clinic, throwing a 3-hit complete game shutout. Surfers win game 1 by a score of 7-0. The game remained 4-4 heading into the bottom of the 8th. Mike Timlin was pitching for the Surfers. After Shane Andrews struck out, Richard Hidalgo pinch hit a double. Pinch hitter Shane Spencer flied out, sending Hidalgo to third. Rusty Greer smacked a 2-out RBI single, scoring Hidalgo and gave the Cautions the 5-4 lead heading into the top of the 9th. Paul Shuey was on the mound for Alphaville, trying to protect a 1-run lead in the top of the 9th. Ozzie Guillen grounded out to short and Chris Hoiles flied out to put 2 quick outs on the board. 1 more and the series would be tied. But BJ Surhoff pulled some late inning heroics, hitting a 2-out single. Dennis Cook came on in relief. Tony Fernandez continued the heroics, doubling in Surhoff to tie the game.
