The Surfers were going for a well managed game in the opening game of this series. In the bottom of the first, Quivio Veras singled, Fernandez walked, and Veras scored on a single by Willie Greene. Facing Encinitas' 2nd ace in as many days, the Destroyers showed no fear, scoring 1 run in the 1st inning on a Rondell White home run and another run in the 2nd on a Damion Easley RBI single. After that both Kevin Brown and Jose Lima pitched well for most of the game. The score remained 2-0 Dedham heading into the bottom of the 9th. Feeling confident, Jose Lima was working on a shutout. First batter, Tony Fernandez, flied out. With 1 out, Andres Galarraga singled, bringing the tying run, Willie Greene, at the plate. Lima's first pitch to Greene went over the wall. 2-run home run, and the game was tied at 2. Lima was done for the day. Vic Darensbourg entered the game and got the last 2 outs of the inning. We'd go to extra innings with a tied ball game. Dan Miceli was pitching for the Surfers in the top of the 10th. Damion Easley struck out for out #1. Pinch hitter Todd Hollandsworth singled, and the next 3 batters reached base to load them up with 1 out. Brian Giles singled, scoring Hollandsworth. 3-2 Dedham. Dan Miceli threw a wild pitch, scoring another run to give Dedham a 2-run lead heading into the bottom of the inning. The Destroyers once again have 3 outs to get a victory with a 2-run lead. This time, closer Donne Wall was on the mound. After Chris Hoiles struck out, Ozzie Guillen walked to once again bring the tying run, pinch hitter BJ Surhoff, at the plate. But this time, Surhoff struck out. With 2 outs and 1 on, Wall got Quilvio Veras to pop out to end the game. Dedhams wins game 2 by a score of 4-2 in extra innings. After falling into an 0-2 hole in the series, the Surfers came out swinging in game 3. The Surfers loaded the bases in the top of the first, and Steve Finley cleared them with a 3-RBI, 2 out triple. Juan Guzman's wild pitch made it 4-0. With the game 4-1 Surfers in the top of the 2nd, Mike Mussina reached second on an error by Brian Giles with 0 outs. Quilvio Veras and Tony Fernandez ground outs allowed Mussina to score to make it 5-1 Encinitas. In the bottom of the 4th, with Dave Burba pitching (Guzman lasted just 2 innings), Todd Helton hit a leadoff double. After Sal Fasano was plunked by a pitch, David Justice doubled, scoring a run. With 2 out, Damion Easley doubled, scoring 2 runs and cut the Surfers lead to 1. 5-4 ballgame. Surfers (Gooden) at Destroyers (Helling). The Surfers sport the big 3 of Maddux, Brown and Mussina, but it's CDBL 80's ace Doc Gooden who pitched the strongest Encinitas performance of this series, throwing 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball. The Surfers scored a run in the 3rd inning on an RBI single by Tony Fernandez, and 2 more in the 4th on a Steve Finley trip and subsequent error by Fernando Tatis. An insurance run in the 9th made it 4-0 Surfers heading into the bottom of the inning. John Hudek was pitching for the Surfers in the bottom of the 9th with a 4-run lead. Hudek walked the first batter, Todd Helton, and Hudek was promptly replaced by Doug Brocail. Brocail gave up a double to pinch hitter Tony Phillips, putting runners at first and third with 0 outs. David Justice popped out for out #1. The next batter, Fernando Tatis, hit a sacrifice fly. 4-1 Surfers. But with 2 outs, that would be all the Destroyers would muster, as Damion Easley grounded out to end the game. The Surfers win game 4 by a score of 4-1, and tie up the series. Both aces were back on the mound, and both got tagged early. Dedham scored 2 in the first thanks to a 2-run shot by Todd Helton, and Encinitas scored 4 in the 2nd, led by a 3-run shot by Quilvio Veras. After the dust cleared in the early innings the Surfers were up 6-3 after 3. In the bottom of the 6th inning with a runner at first, Damion Easley doubled to put runners at the corners. Pinch hitter Todd Hollandsworth singled, scoring 2 runners and shaved the Surfers' lead to 1. 6-5 ballgame. Encinitas added to their lead in the top of the 8th when Steve Finley walked, stole second and scored on a Chris Hoiles single. 7-5 Surfers. The Surfers put Dan Miceli on the mound in the bottom of the 8th. After David Justice singled, pinch hitter Tony Phillips smacked a triple, scoring Justice. Pinch hitter Jason Varitek singled, scoring Phillips and tied the game up at 7. Mike Timlin became the new pitcher on the mound, and his 3rd pitch to Bobby Smith plunked him, putting a batter on. With 2 outs and 2 on, Brian Giles singled, scoring Smith and gave the Destroyers the 8-7 lead. The Surfers would have 3 outs to try and score some runs. Vic Darensbourg was pitching for the Destroyers, and he would have to face the heart of the Surfers order. The first batter up, Andres Galarraga, struck out. Pinch hitter Butch Huskey grounded out. With 2 outs, it would be up to Ellis Burks to do something for the Surfers. But it was not to be. Darensbourg struck Burks out, ending the game. Dedham comes from behind in the late innings to win game 5 by a score of 8-7, and are a victory away from going to the CDBL world series. With the Destroyers on the brink of advancement and the Surfers on the edge of elimination, game six was important. In the top of the first, Rondell White hit a 1 out double, and Todd Helton drove in the first run of the game with a 2 out single. Sal Fasano and David Justice hit consecutive singles to drive in Helton and put Dedham up 2-0 after 1 inning. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Surfers loaded the bases with 2 outs. Willie Greene was walked, forcing in a run to cut the Destroyer lead to 1. 2-1 Dedham after 3. Both teams were scoreless from the 4th-8th inning. In the top of the 9th, Todd Helton hit a leadoff double. Helton moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Todd Hollandsworth, and after David Justice was intentionally walked to put runners at first and third, pinch hitter Tony Phillips drove in the insurance run with an RBI double. 3-1 Dedham heading into the bottom of the 9th. Closer Vic Darensbourg was on the mound for Dedham, just 3 outs away from sending his team to the world series. The first batter up, Chris Hoiles, hit a leadoff double. Mike Benjamin flied out. 1 out. Pinch hitter Lyle Mouton struck out, but the third strike was a passed ball, allowing Mouton to get to first and Hoiles to third. Representing the winning run at the plate was Quilvio Veras ... at least until Mouton was caught trying to steal second. 2 outs. Now representing the tying run, Veras grounded out, ending the game and the Surfers' season. The Dedham Destroyers win game 6 by a score of 3-1, and advance to the 1998 CDBL World Series. DESTROYERS WIN 4-2. 10/16/1998, DED98-ENC98, Jacobs Field 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LOB DP 1998 Destroyers 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 3 6 0 6 0 1998 Surfers 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 7 0 9 1 Destroyers AB R H BI D T
