******************************************************************* GAME FOUR -- Kamados (Woodard) at Destroyers (Helling). California could win it all with a game 4 victory, Dedham was looking to get their rotation another round in the world series. In the bottom of the first, the Destroyers went up 3-0 with a Todd Helton RBI double and Sal Fasano 2-run shot. After trading a run in the 3rd, Dedham scored twice more in the 5th inning on solo home runs by Helton and David Justice. 6-1 Destroyers after 5. California nibbed away at the lead, scoring lone runs in the 7th & 8th to close the gap to 6-3. But they were still down 3 runs heading into the top of the 9th. Dedham had Vic Darensbourg on the mound. After a Mo Vaughn groundout, Scott Rolen hit a single. Eddie Perez came up to the plate, and wouldn't you know it, "Mr. October" would come through. Perez smacked a home run, driving in 2 runs and closed the Destroyers' lead to 1. Glenallen Hill got to first on an error and was replaced by pinch runner Chris Stynes. Stynes used his legwork to get to 2nd on a passed ball, and scored on a Jeffrey Hammonds triple. 6-6 tie ballgame. Donne Wall replaced Darensbourg on the mound. With a runner at third, Kevin Sefcik walked. The next batter, Mark Whiten, hit a grounder to Walt Weiss, who threw out Hammonds at home, preventing a run from scoring. Jose Offerman walked to load the bases with 2 outs. Up came pinch hitter Randy Velarde. Velarde had his most important hit of the season, smacking a single to score 2 runs. 8-6 Kamados. Mo Vaughn smacked a double, scoring 2 more. 10-6 Kamados, with 7 of those runs happening in the top of the 9th. Chad Fox pitched for the Kamados in the bottom of the 9th with a 4-run lead, and just 3 outs away from California winning their first ever CDBL championship. First batter up, Walt Weiss, singled. But Rondell White hit into a double play, emptying the bases and putting 2 outs on the board. Up now was Brian Giles to try and save the Destroyers' season. But it was not to be. Fox struck out Giles, ending the game, the series and the season. California wins game 4 by a score of 10-6, wins the series in 4 straight series, and captures their first ever CDBL world series championship. KAMADOS WIN 4-0, 1998 CDBL WORLD CHAMPIONS! 1998 PLAYOFF MVP: California started slow in the post-season, but picked up steam as they advanced. Bartolo Colon went 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA, and Eric Davis hit .410 with 8 home runs, 14 runs scored and 19 RBI in 16 games. But the 1998 playoff award goes to platoon catcher "Mr. October" Eddie Perez, who hit .450 with 2 home runs, 3 runs scored, and 7 RBI (3 of those game winning) in just 20 at bats and 4 started games.
