1998 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Matchup Dedham Destroyers (91-71, League Wildcard #1) vs. Avila Dragons (104-58, Tiant Division Winner) The Dragons and Destroyers dueled for the Tiant division pennant before Avila pulled away in the final month. Now the teams face each other to determine who goes to the GT Conference Finals. Dedham's offense revolved around young 1B Todd Helton, who hit .333 with 27 home runs, 92 runs scored and 123 RBI. Rondell White hit .337 with 26 home runs and 88 runs scored, while Damion Easley had a .372 on base average with 23 home runs and 95 runs scored. Fernando Tatis added in a .297 average and 79 RBI. Juan Guzman led the starters in wins with 17, Jose Lima added 16 with a 3.73 ERA, and Rick Helling and Dustin Hermanson each won 14 games with ERAs below 3.50. Closer duties were split between Donne Wall (23 saves) and Vic Darensbourg (22 saves, 3.22 ERA). The Dragons had the highest scoring offense in the majors this year with 1017 runs scored. Jim Edmonds hit .342 with 132 runs scored and 116 RBI, Brady Anderson had a .401 on base average and 105 runs scored, while Alex Rodriguez nearly set a new major league record for RBI with 181, and hit 45 home runs with 50 stolen bases and 133 runs scored. Mickey Morandini added 98 runs scored to the cause. Jason Schmidt's ERA was 5.14, but the offense was still good enough for him to go 18-3. Andy Ashby won 17 with a 4.90 ERA, and Roger Clemens went 15-8. Closer duties were split between Steve Reed (19 saves) and Jason Christiansen (20 saves, 2.56 ERA). In 12 regular season games, the Destroyers edged the Dragons 7 wins to 5. The Dragons have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Destroyers (Hermanson) at Dragons (Clemens). The runs started plenty early, as Jim Edmonds hit a 2-run home run and Harold Baines a 2-out solo home run to put Avila up 3-0 in the 1st inning. Dedham slowly closed the gap by scoring runs in the 2nd & 3rd innings, but Avila added to their lead with an Alex Rodriguez RBI single in the 3rd to make it 4-2 Avila. The Dragons pulled away in the 5th inning. With 2 on and 1 out, Johnny Damon doubled, scoring a run and ending Hermanson's day. After Andy Fox walked, Chad Kreuter hit a sacrifice fly and Roger Clemens snagged an RBI single to put the Dragons up 7-2. Normally being down 5 runs would be the end of the game. Not for these teams. The Destroyers roared back in the 5th, scoring 5 runs, capped by a 2-out, 2 RBI single by Rondell White, which knocked Roger Clemens out of the game. 7-7 ballgame. In the 7th, pinch hitter Trenidad Hubbard hit a solo home run. In the 8th, with runners at first and second, Rondell White smacked a ball to Harold Baines at first. The venerable slugger couldn't handle it, allowing the bases to be loaded with 1 out. Pinch hitter Matt Mieske grounded to second, scoring a run to tie the game up at 8. Jason Christiansen threw a wild pitch, allowing Walt Weiss to score from 3rd and gave the Destroyers the 9-8 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, trailing by 1, Jim Edmonds walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Hubbard to tie it up at 9 heading into the 9th inning. The Destroyers were hitting in the top of the 9th. Leadoff hitter Bob Henley singled, moved to third on a single by Bobby Smith, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Damion Easley. 10-9 Destroyers, and the Dragons would need to score in the bottom of the inning to stay alive in the game. Donne Wall was pitching for the Destroyers, protecting a 1-run lead. First batter up, Craig Wilson, flied out. Next batter, Ron Gant, tied it up with a solo home run. 10-10 ballgame, and this one would go to extra innings. Ricky Bones was pitching for the Dragons in the top of the 10th. Rondell White reached first on an error by Alex Rodriguez. After Mieske singled, Todd Helton smacked a double, scoring White to give Dedham an 11-10 lead. Henley was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 0 outs. Wall was left in to hit, and smacked a key single, scoring 2 runs to put the Destroyers up 13-10. The game moved to the bottom of the 10th, with the Dragons facing a 3-run deficit. Dave Burba, the 8th Dedham pitcher of the day, was on the mound. Harold Baines grounded out for out #1. After Trenidad Hubbard singled, Andy Fox struck out to make it out #2. Pinch hitter Dave Magadan singled, moving Hubbard to 2nd. With 2 on and 2 outs, pinch hitter Carlos Guillen singled, scoring Hubbard to cut Dedham's lead to 2. Up next was Ron Gant. Gant had previously homered in the 9th inning, and he kept up his late inning heroics, taking Burba deep for a 3-run home run. Avila wins game 1 of this playoff matchup in the final at bat by a score of 14-13. ******************************************************************* GAME FOUR -- Dragons (Ashby) at Destroyers (Helling). Continuing the series on their home turf, Dedham made the most of it. In the first inning, Brian Giles hit a solo home run to give the Destroyers the quick 1-0 lead. In the third, with 0 outs and the bases loaded, Orlando Palmeiro hit into a double play, allowing a run to score. Giles then smacked a 2-out triple and scored on a Todd Helton single. 4-0 Destroyers. The Dragons made their first mark on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th, when Andy Fox hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly, scoring Alex Rodriguez. But Dedham answered with 2 more runs in the bottom of the inning, and kept the Dragons at arm's length for the rest of the game. Rick Helling gives the Destroyers' bullpen some more rest by throwing 8 innings as the Destroyers defeat the Dragons 7-3, and are one win away from advancing to the GT conference finals. ******************************************************************* GAME FIVE -- Dragons (Clemens) at Destroyers (Hermanson). After the fireworks of game 1, the starting pitchers were hoping to show why they were the aces. Did not happen. Brady Anderson took Dustin Hermanson's 2nd pitch deep, and the Dragons piled on 4 runs in the top of the inning. Not to be out-done, the Destroyers loaded the bases with 0 outs, and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. By the 5th inning, the score was 6-4 Dragons. In the 6th inning, the Dragons piled on 4 more runs, capped by a 2-out, bases loaded, 2-RBI single by Roger Clemens. True to the game's form, the Destroyers closed the lead to 2 by score 4 runs over the next 2 innings, led by a 2-run home run by Damion Easley in the 7th. The score was 10-8 Avila heading into the bottom of the 9th. Jason Christiansen was pitching for the Dragons. First batter up, Troy Glaus, singled. Damion Easley singled and Ruben Rivera walked to load the bases with 0 outs. The chance for the Destroyers to advance to the conference finals with one swing was a real possibility. The next batter at the plate, Walt Weiss, struck out. Next up, Rondell White, lined out to Alex Rodriguez at short. Now with 2 outs, the bases loaded, and the Destroyers down by 2, up came pinch hitter Manny Martinez to the plate, replacing Brian Giles. Would Manny Martinez prove to be the series hero? Not this game. Martinez struck out, ending the game without a score. Avila wins another aces slugfest in a 10-8 victory, and move the series back to their home turf. Jason Schmidt got off to a rough start, as the first pitch to leadoff batter Walt Weiss resulted in a home run. 1-0 Dedham. Alex Rodriguez, who has been on fire this series, tied it up for Avila in the bottom of the inning with an RBI triple. 1-1 after 1. In the third inning, Sal Fasano reached first after Harold Baines misplayed the ball. A Schmidt wild pitch advanced Fasano to second, and two consecutive ground outs allowed Fasano to score. 2-1 Dedham. After Damion Easley walked, Juan Guzman smacked a double, scoring Easley. Weiss singled, scoring Guzman and gave the Destroyers a 4-1 lead, 3 runs unearned. Another run in the 7th padded Dedham's lead, 5-1 Destroyers. In the bottom of the 8th, the Dragons scored again when Alex Rodriguez hit a solo home run (his 2nd hit of the night, as well as Avila's 2nd hit of the night). 5-2. Dedham added another insurance run in the top of the 9th, a Brian Giles RBI single. Vic Darensbourg was pitching for the Destroyers with a 4-run lead. The home town Avila crowd was pretty muted, and he made easy work of the rest of the Avila lineup. Chad Kreuter struck out to end the game and the Dragons' season. Dedham wins game 7 by a score of 6-2, and advance to the GT conference finals. DESTROYERS WIN 4-3. 10/8/1998, DED98-AVI98, Coors Field 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E LOB DP 1998 Destroyers 1 0 0 3 0 0 1 0 1 6 9 0 9 0 1998 Dragons 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 3 1 6 1 Destroyers AB R H BI D T HR
