1997 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Madison Muckrakers (97-65, Paige division winner) vs. Manhatten Beach Mashers (100-62, Aaron Paige Conference Wildcard) The Muckrakers kept pace with the Isotopes this season, and ended the season in a dead tie. Thanks to a tiebreaker they enter the playoffs as the Paige division winner. Manny Ramirez hit .303 with 22 home runs, 95 runs scored and 93 RBI. Dave Hollins hit .300 with 91 runs scored and 92 RBI. Andruw Jones smacked 22 home runs while scoring 82 runs and drove in 81. Tim Wakefield posted a 17-7 record with a 3.34 ERA, and Roger Bailey finished 16-9 with a 3.59 ERA. Closer Billy Taylor was among the best, saving 38 games with a 3.19 ERA. The Mashers were kept in 2nd place in their division thanks to Arkham's stellar season, but they were no slouch, winning 100 games and the conference wildcard. Mark McGwire had an amazing season, hitting .307 with 67 home runs, 141 runs scored and a league record 186 RBI. Jeff Blauser had a .376 on base average and 125 runs scored, while Jeromy Burnitz slugging .555 with 31 home runs and 98 RBI. Justin Thompson won 20 games with a 3.50 ERA, and Jimmy Key went 17-7. Alan Benes and Ben McDonald each finished with 13 wins. Closer Jim Corsi had 29 saves and a 3.38 ERA. The Mashers won the season series 7-2, but Madison holds home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Mashers (McDonald) at Muckrakers (Wells). The Mashers were the first team to strike. In the top of the first inning, Jeff Blauser smacked a 1 out double and scored on Kevin Young's RBI double. In the 3rd inning, Blauser got a 1 out walk, scored on Kevin Young's double, and Sandy Alomar Jr. made it 4-0 with a 2-run home run. The Mashers remained comfortably in front for the rest of the game. The Mashers win game 1 by a score of 7-1. Down 3-1, the Muckrakers were in a must win situation. The Mashers were looking to polish off Madison and advance to the conference finals. The Mashers kept to a 3-0 lead by the 2nd inning, and made it 4-0 after 5. The Muckrakers chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the 6th on a Mike Sweeney solo shot and a run in the 7th on a Dave Martinez solo home run. The Mashers were still up 4-2 heading into the top of the 9th inning. Marc Valdes was pitching for Manhatten Beach. Valdes got into trouble quickly, loading the bases with 0 outs. Royce Clayton grounded out, scoring a runner. 4-3 Mashers, 1 out. The next batter, Jeff Reboulet, hit a sacrifice fly, tying up the game. We would go into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th inning, Manhatten Beach had a chance to win it, when with Ben Grieve at first, Billy Spiers smacked a double. But Dave Martinez was able to get the ball home in time, and Ivan Rodriguez tagged Grieve out. In the top of the 12th, Tony Graffanino hit a leadoff single. In the 6th inning, with Billy Spiers at first, Jeromy Burnitz smacked a 2-run dinger to cut the lead to 2. In the bottom of the inning, Smith homered again for a 5-2 game. Ruben Sierra answered in the top of the 7th with a solo home run of his own. The game remained 5-3 heading into the top of the 9th. Manhatten Beach had to score at least 2 runs to save their season.
