1997 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 San Diego Rude Dawgs (101-61, Tiant Division Winner) vs. Encinitas Surfers (93-69, #2 league wildcard) The Rude Dawgs sprang out in front early in the season, and fought off a challenge late in the season by the Boston Bulldogs before clinching the Tiant division pennant. Tino Martinez had a big year, hitting .289 with 38 home runs, 110 runs scored and 105 RBI. Steve Finley smacked 35 home runs with 109 runs scored and 118 RBI. Nomar Garciapara only hit .265, but scored 91 runs and drove in 87. John Burkett won 20 games for San Diego with a 3.21 ERA. Andy Benes went 13-5 with a 3.31 ERA, while Todd Stottlemyre was 11-7 with a 3.56 ERA. Mariano Rivera was among the best of closers, saving 32 games with a microscopic 1.51 ERA. The Surfers battled their way to the last playoff spot. Andres Galarraga hit .311 with 30 home runs, 102 runs and 102 RBI. Ellis Burks hit 25 home runs with 76 runs scored, while Quilvio Veras had 76 runs scored and 30 stolen bases. The Surfers feature one of the top rotations in the league. Greg Maddux went 17-5 with a 2.20 ERA, Mike Mussina was 16-12 with a 3.20 ERA, Kevin Brown went 15-8 with a 3.73 ERA, and Mike Morgan won 12 games with a 3.64 ERA. Closer Mike Timlin saved 31 games. In 9 regular season games, the Rude Dawgs bested the Surfers 6 games to 3. San Diego has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Surfers (Maddux) at Rude Dawgs (Stottlemyre). In this opening round series, San Diego was the first team to score. In the 2nd inning, Nomar Garciaparra singled, stole second, and scored on a Carl Everett single. The Surfers tied it up on a 0 out, bases loaded Bip Roberts sacrifice fly in the 4th inning. The Rude Dawgs slowly pulled ahead in the 6th inning, when Todd Hundley and Tino Martinez hit back to back solo home runs off of Greg Maddux. In the 7th inning, Bobby Bonilla hit a pinch hit 2-run home run to put the game away for good. San Diego wins the first game of this series by a score of 5-2. In the bottom of the 3rd inning with 2 on, Ellis Burks drove in the first run of the game, singling in Dave Magadan. The Surfers would score twice more to go up 3-0. The Rude Dawgs had a chance to do some damage in teh top of the 4th inning, loading the bases with 0 outs. But Bill Mueller struck out and Carl Everett ground into a double play, leaving the Rude Dawgs scoreless. They made up for it in the 5th inning, when Todd Hundley doubled in a run and Dave Martinez smacked a 3-run home run, tying it up at 3. They scored individual runs in the 6th and 7th, and Tino Martinez put the game away for good in the 8th with a grand slam home run. San Diego wins game 3 by a score of 9-3. San Diego slowly pulled away from the Surfers early in the game. In the 2nd inning, Dave Martinez doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch by Mike Mogran, and scored on a Nomar sacrifice fly. In the 3rd, with runners at first and third, Rich Becker grounded out, allowing a run to score. 2-0 San Diego after 3. In the bottom of the 8th, the Surfers made their move. With runners at second and third with 0 outs, Chris Hoiles smacked a double, scoring both runners and tying the game up at 2. Reliever Anthony Telford came on board, and threw a wild pitch to move Hoiles to third. 2 outs later, pinch hitter Todd Hollandsworth hit an infield single, scoring Hoiles and giving Encinitas the 3-2 lead. In the top of the 9th, the Rude Dawgs now had 3 outs to keep in the game. Surfers closer Mike Timlin was pitching. First batter up, Dave Martinez, struck out. Nomar grounded a single, as did Steve Finley to put 2 on. Bill Mueller also smacked a single, scoring Nomar and tying the game up at 3. The Surfers would go into the bottom of the 9th with the score tied, and have 3 outs to try and take the game outright.
