FIVE -- Rude Dawgs (Stottlemyre) at Bulldogs (Johnson). The two aces of these GT conference finals meet for one last time. In the top of the 4th, with Jeff Frye at first, Bobby Bonilla went deep for a 2-0 lead. Nomar Garciaparra knocked in a run in the 6th for a 3-run San Diego lead. The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead in the 6th, when Stan Javier hit a leadoff home run. They scored another run in the 7th on a Kevin Orie home run. They tied it up in the 8th when Pat Meares singled in Edgardo Alfonzo from second. Neither team would score in the 9th, so the game would head into extra innings with the score deadlocked at 3. In the top of the 10th inning, Mark Wohlers was pitching for the Bulldogs. Chris Stynes flied out and Al Martin struck out to put 2 quick outs on the board. Carlos Hernandez singled and Greg Zaun walked to put 2 runners on. Once again going with a pinch hitting catcher, Brent Mayne could not continue the streak, striking out to lead the game 3-3 heading into the bottom of the 10th. Ricky Bottalico started out the inning for San Diego. First batter up was Ray Lankford. Looking at a 3-2 pitch, Lankford ended the game by sending the ball over the wall. Walk off home run, and Boston wins game 5 by a score of 4-3. The Bulldogs are 1 win away from advancing to the CDBL world series. Boston was 1 game away from the world series, but they'd have to defeat San Diego on their home turf to do so. Both starters would prove to be effective. The first run of the game happened in the 5th, when San Diego's Steve Finley hit a solo shot off of Jeff Fassero. Orlando Merced returned the favor in the 7th, hitting a solo shot off of Andy Benes in the 7th inning. Both starters would last 7 innings, and each gave up 1 run. In the 8th inning, it was the bullpen's turn to hold steady. In the bottom of the 8th, with Roberto Hernandez pitching, Jeff Frye got a 1-out walk. Bonilla advanced Frye to third on a single. Tino Martinez singled, scoring Frye and gave San Diego the 2-1 lead. Nomar Gariaparra walked, loading the bases. On came Jeff Nelson in relief to face George Williams. Williams broke the game open, hitting a bases clearing double to give San Diego the 5-1 lead. Mariano Rivera got the last 3 outs in the top of the 9th to seal the game. San Diego wins game 6 by a score of 5-1, and force a final game seven, with a trip to the world series as the prize. After 162 regular season games, a round 1 series and 6 conference final games, this one was for the ticket to the CDBL world series. In the top of the 2nd inning, with 2 outs and 2 on, Bulldogs pitcher Matt Morris helped his own cause, smacking a double and driving in 2 runs. In the 3rd inning, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with 0 outs. Pat Meares grounded out, allowing a runner to score for a 3-0 Boston lead. Turner Ward grounded out as well, scoring a 2nd run to put Boston up 4-0. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Todd Hundley smacked a 2-run shot, cutting the Bulldogs lead to 2. In the 6th, with 1 on and 1 out, Steve Finley tied it up with a single swing, hitting a 2-run home run to tie the game up at 4. For these two teams, their futures changed to a sudden-death 3 inning playoff. In the top of the 7th inning, Eric Gunderson was pitching for the Rude Dawgs. Turner Ward walked and moved to third on a Kevin Orie single. After Joe Girardi lined out, pinch hitter Jeff Conine hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Ward and giving Boston the 5-4 lead. After Stan Javier was issued a walk, Edgardo Alfonzo added to Boston's lead with an RBI single. 6-4 Bulldogs. Mariano Rivera would pitch 1 2/3 shutout innings to prevent the Bulldogs from scoring again, but the Rude Dawgs would need to score at least 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to keep the game going. The Boston Bulldogs were 3 outs away from advancing to the world series. Mark Wohlers was pitching for the Bulldogs. The Rude Dawgs needed to score at least 2 runs in 3 outs, or their season would be over. The first batter up, Jeff Frye, grounded out. 1 out. The next batter, Chris Stynes, struck out. 2 outs. Just 1 out separated the Rude Dawgs from the end of their season. The pressure was on the shoulders of Rich Becker. Becker, who hit .257 in the regular season. Todd Hundley, who has been having a massive playoff series, was on deck. All Becker needed to do was to get on base. But it was not to be. Becker grounded out, ending the game and the Rude Dawgs season. Boston wins game 7 by a score of 6-4, and advance to their fourth appearance in the CDBL world series.
