1997 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Arkham Investigators (113-49, Aaron Division Winner) vs. Springfield Isotopes (97-65, #1 league wildcard) Arkham had their best season in history, posting a league-record-tying 113 victories. Ken Griffey Jr had a stellar year, hitting .291 with 48 home runs, 141 runs scored and 141 RBI. In just 378 at bats, Reggie Sanders hit 36 home runs with 93 RBI. JT Snow had a .370 on base average with 26 home runs and 84 RBI, while Joe Randa hit .337 with 74 runs scored in 407 at bats. Kevin Appier finished the season 19-12 with a 3.82 ERA, while Francisco Cordova went 15-6 with a 3.06 ERA. Rick Reed and Scott Kamienecki both finished with 17 wins. Closer Arthur Rhodes saved 24 games with a 2.46 ERA, and Stan Belinda finished with 18 saves and a 2.74 ERA. Springfield battled the Muckrakers for control of the Paige division before both teams settled for a pennant tie. Barry Bonds had his customary great season, hitting 33 home runs with a .399 on base average, 121 runs scored and 138 RBI. Bernie Williams hit .343 with 107 runs scored and 106 RBI, while Mark Grace scored 110 runs and Tony Phillips 107. Catcher Mike Stanley hit 22 home runs with a .382 on base average and 82 runs driven in. Curt Schilling had an ace season, going 22-8 with a 3.06 ERA. Tom Gordon finished 15-5 with a 3.59 ERA, while John Thomson went 11-7 with a 3.84 ERA. Closer Butch Henry saved 26 games and won another 10. In 9 regular season games, Arkham won the season series 6 games to 3. Arkham has home field advantage due to their higher playoff seeding. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Isotopes (Schilling) at Investigators (Appier). The Investigators struck early and often, scoring 4 runs in the first 3 innings, capped by a 2-run dinger by JT Snow in the 1st. In the 6th inning, the Isotopes put themselves on the board when FP Santangelo singled in Mark Grace. The Investigators answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Reggie Sanders. The Isotopes cut the lead to 3 in the 8th when Kevin Stock was hit by a pitch in a bases loaded situation, forcing in a run. But Arthur Rhodes and Stan Belinda kept the Isotopes from scoring again. Arkham wins game 1 by a score of 5-2. Game two was a real back and forth between the two playoff teams. Jon Nunnally started things off with a 2-out RBI single in the first. Mike Cameron answered in the top of the 2nd with a solo home run, and Jose Valentin hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to put Arkham up 2-1. In the 6th inning, the bases were loaded for the Isotopes with 1 out. FP Santangelo smacked a grounder to Randa, who misplayed it. Runner scored, and the game was tied at 2. Mike Stanley singled, scoring 2 more runs and put Springfield up 4-2. Arkham tied it up in the bottom of the 6th when Jon Nunnally tripled in a run and scored himself on a Matt Lawton double. Arkham made their move in the bottom of the 8th inning, when Nunnally again came through, hitting a 2-run shot. The Investigators would go into the top of the 9th with a 2-run lead. Stan Belinda was on the mound for Arkham. Mike Stanley grounded out for out #1. Kevin Stocker singled. Rhodes came on in replacement for Belinda. Craig Counsel singled. Pinch hitter Todd Greene doubled, scoring a run. With 1 out and runners at 2nd and third, Mark Grace hit a sacrifice fly, scoring another runner. Springfield got to Arkham's 2 best relievers to tie the game up at 6. In the bottom of the 9th, with runners at first and third with 2 outs, Matt Lawton had a shot to win the game outright for Arkham, but flied out to end Arkham's chances in regular innings. We would go to extra innings with the game tied at 6. The Isotopes were the team to score first in extra innings. With 0 outs, Kevin Stocker doubled, and Craig Craig Counsell doubled him in, putting Springfield up 7-6. Wade Boggs advanced Counsell to third with a single, and Mark Grace grounded out, scoring Counsell. 8-6 Isotopes. With 2 outs, Mike Cameron singled, scoring Boggs and gave Springfield a 3-run lead. Butch Henry made the bottom of the 11th a non-event, not allowing a single Arkham batter to reach base. Springfield wins game 2 by a score of 9-6 in extra innings.
