1996 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Springfield Isotopes (91-71, Paige Division Winner) vs. Point Lomas Friars (92-70, AP Conference Wildcard) Point Lomas settled into the AP wildcard slot early on in the season and easily held onto it. Greg Vaughn had a big year, hitting 38 home runs with 116 RBI. Kevin Seitzer hit .299 with 41 doubles, 106 runs scored and 92 RBI. Catcher Dave Nilsson hit .353 with 18 home runs, 90 runs scored and 96 RBI. Bob Tewksbury finished the season 15-7 with a 3.60 ERA, while Donne Wall went 13-8 with a 3.75 ERA. Hired gun Pat Hengten was 7-5 with a 3.80 ERA in 19 games started. Bob Patterson saved 13 games and Antonio Osuna saved 17 games in a split closer role. Springfield battled Dewey Beach for the Paige division pennant all season before emerging as the victor. Barry Bonds hit .310 with 40 home runs, 137 runs scored and 156 RBI, while Bernie Williams hit .285 with 28 home runs, 17 doubles, 114 runs scored and 125 RBI. Tony Phillips had a .413 on base average with 135 runs scored, and Mark Grace and Tony Whiten each scored at least 100 runs. Curt Schilling went 15-6 with a 2.99 ERA, while Tom Gordon was 16-10 with a 3.25 ERA. Closer Darren Holmes sported 24 saves with a 2.72 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Friars bested the Isotopes 6 games to 3. Springfield has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Friars (Martinez) at Isotopes (Schilling). The batters were out in force in game one. In the bottom of the first, the Isotopes chased Ramon Martinez early, putting everyone in the lineup at the plate and scoring 5 runs, ending Martinez's day after 2/3 of an inning. Curt Schilling didn't have much more luck, lasting 3 1/3 innings after giving up 6 earned runs. The game was 7-6 Isotopes after 4 innings. After both starters were chased out of the game, the relievers clamped down on the offense. The Friars would not score again in the 8th, when Kevin Seitzer walked, moved to third on a Chris Sabo double, and scored on a Robert Perez ground out. 7-7 tie ballgame. In the bottom of the 8th, the Isotopes loaded the bases with 1 out with the game still tied. Tyler Houston had a chance to send his team ahead, but struck out instead. Next, it was up to Andy Tomberlin to make a difference. Tomberlin got a 2 out walk, forcing in a run and giving Springfield the 8-7 lead. Bob Patterson balked, forcing in another run. Heading in the top of the 9th, the Isotopes had a 9-7 lead. Darren Holmes was on the mound. Kevin Mitchell hit a leadoff double. Glenallen Hill grounded out to third, unable to advance the runner. Walt Weiss grounded out as well. Mark McLemore walked with 2 outs. Representing the go-ahead run at the plate was Kevin Seitzer. But the luck of the Friars would run out, as Seitzer popped out in the infield to end the game. Springfield wins a slugfest game one by the score of 9 to 7. The Friars were looking to nickel and dime their way to victory in game two. In the top of the first, Kevin Seitzer hit a 2 out double, and scored on a Dave Nilsson single. In the 2nd, Jason Giambi hit a 0 out triple, and scored on a Robert Perez single. 2-0 Point Lomas after 2 innings of play. Springfield would start their charge in the middle innings. In the bottom of the 4th, Barry Bonds cut the lead to 1 with a solo home run. In the 5th, with runners at first and second, Ozzie Smith singled, scoring Mike Stanley. Springfield's starting pitcher, Jack McDowell, would even get into the act, grounding a 1 out single between first and second, giving the Isotopes the 3-2 lead. The game remained 3-2 in Springfield's favor heading into the top of the 9th. Isotopes closer Darren Holmes was on the mound. First batter up, Darren Fletcher, walked. Walt Weiss singled, moving the runner to third. 2 batters later, Kevin Seitzer grounded out, allowing a runner to score and tying the game up at 3. With 2 outs, Dave Nilsson hit a single in a chaotic play, resulting in another runner scoring and an error on Al Martin. 4-3 Friars, and now the Isotopes needed to score in the bottom of the 9th to not lose the game. Doug Bochtler pitched the bottom of the 9th for the Friars, holding onto a 1 run lead. First batter up, Chris Jones, singled, and moved to 2nd on a throwing error by Greg Vaughn. Bernie Williams tied the game up with an RBI triple. 4-4 ballgame, and it would head into extra innings. Unfortunately for the Friars, Bochtler completely fell apart in the bottom of the 10th inning, putting the first three runners on base, and then in an anti-climax forced in the winning run when he walked Dave Silvestri. Springfield wins game 2 by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings. In the bottom of the 4th inning with 1 out and runners on second and third, Walt Weiss hit an infield single, scoring Greg Vaughn to give the Friars a 6-5 lead. Mark McLemore grounded out, allowing another runner to score to make it 7-5. In the top of the 8th, FP Santangelo hit a leadoff home run to close the gap to 1. Kevin Stocker singled, followed by 2 outs from Jeff Reboulet and Tony Phillips. The next batter, Mark Grace, hit a bounding ball to Walt Weiss, who misplayed the ball. Error to the shortstop, his second of the game, making it 2 runners on, 2 outs. Up next was Barry Bonds, who so far has not had a good series.
