Up 2-0, the Mashers were feeling confident rolling into Springfield. In the 3rd inning, Ben McDonald smacked a double, and was driven in by Eric Young. Mark McGwire singled, scoring Young and gave Manhatten Beach the 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Bernie Williams hit his first home run of the post-season, closing the gap to 1. In the 5th inning, with 2 outs, Tony Phillips and Mark Grace were issued walks. Barry Bonds has been hit and miss this post-season, but in the 5th, he was all hit, taking McDonald deep for a 3- run shot. 4-1 Isotopes. In the 6th inning, the bases were loaded with Mashers, and Manhatten Beach scored a run when Paul O'Neill was forced in with a walk. In the 7th inning, Kevin Young cut the Springfield lead to 1 with a leadoff home run. With 2 outs and the bases loaded for the 2nd straight inning, Dave Martinez smacked a double, scoring 2 more runs and gave the Mashers a 6-4 lead. With the Istopes batting in the bottom of the 8th, pinch hitter Kevin Stocker cut the Masher lead to 1 with a solo home run. After Bernie Williams singled, FP Santaneglo drove him in with a single. 6-6 tie ballgame. The Isotopes were not done, loading the bases with 2 outs. Barry Bonds continued his hot streak, smacking a single and driving in 2 runs. Al Martin cleared the rest of the bases with a single. 10-6 Isotopes. The Mashers would not recover. The Isotopes scored 4 in the 2nd, with the go-ahead run being a sacrifice fly by Chris James. The Mashers scored yet another 3 runs in the 3rd, starting with a leadoff home run by Mark McGwire. An exchange of single runs in the 4th made the game 7-5 in Manhatten Beach's favor. The Isotopes poured out 4 more runs in the 7th, capped by a 3-run shot by Chris Jones. 9-7 Springfield. Manhatten Beach took the lead in the 8th with 3 runs scored, with the go-ahead run coming from a Mike Dyer wild pitch scoring Jeff Blauser from 3rd. 10-9 Manhatten Beach. Springfield retook the lead in the bottom of the 8th with 2 runs scored with a 2-run home run by Kevin Stocker. 11-10 Springfield. Manhatten Beach now needed to score in the top of the 9th to win it. And, like how the rest of the game went, they did. Paul O'Neill tripled in Dave Martinez, and scored on Kevin Young's sacrifice fly. Then, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Chad Kreuter smacked a bases clearing hit. 15-11 Manhatten Beach. Now the Isotopes needed to score at least 4 runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game. Springfield made a good effort with 2 outs and the bases loaded. Mark Grace was at the plate, and got the walk, forcing in a run and cutting Manhatten Beach's lead to 3. Representing the winning run at the plate was Rey Sanchez. Sanchez hit 1 home run in the regular season, and the game had been one of offense so far. Would Sanchez save the day? Unfortunately for Springfield, the answer was no. Sanchez popped out to second, ending the game. Manhatten Beach wins a wild slugfest 15-12, and are a win away from advancing to the CDBL World Series.
