1996 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Manhatten Beach Mashers (97-65, Aaron Division Winner) vs. Dewey Beach Lush (90-72, #1, league wildcard) The Lush had one of the most formidable offenses in history, scoring their way to the league wildcard. Jim Thome hit .368 with 47 home runs, 143 runs scored and 126 RBI. Gary Sheffield hit .366 with 50 home runs, 127 runs scored and 151 RBI. Frank Thomas had a .396 on base average, 37 home runs, 137 runs scored, and 107 RBI. Craig Biggio had 146 runs scored, and Sammy Sosa hit 51 home runs with 144 RBI. Orlando Miller even got into the act, hitting 22 home runs with 103 RBI. Chris Haney went 14-10 with a 5.03 ERA, while Kevin Ritz went 15-11 with a 5.49 ERA. Terrell Wade led the Dewey Beach relievers in saves with 11. Manhatten Beach had a strangehold on the Aaron division title for most of the season, and sported the best record in the conference. Mark McGwire was a dominant force, hitting 61 home runs with 123 runs scored and 162 RBI. Dave Martinez hit .354 with 114 runs scored, while Tim Naehring hit .293 with 25 home runsa nd 108 RBI. Eric Young swiped 84 bases and scored 127 runs. The team's .376 on base average was the best in league history. Starter Juan Guzman finished the year 18-3 with a 2.43 ERA, while Ben McDonald was 16-11. Closer Ricky Bottalico saved 28 games. In 9 regular season contests, the Mashers won the season series 5 games to 4. The Mashers have home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Lush (Harnisch) at Mashers (Guzman). Dewey Beach came out swinging in this "Battle of the Beaches" series. The Lush poured out 5 runs in the first two innnings to go up 5-1. In the third inning, Eric Young walked and scored on a Paul O'Neill double to cut Dewey Beach's lead to 3. Dewey Beach found themselves in trouble in the bottom of the 6th. With the bases loaded and 1 out, Pete Harnsich faced pinch hitter Brandt Brown. Brown was a dynamo off the bench, hitting 11 home runs in 84 regular season at bats. So what does Brown do? Hit a grand slam home run. 6-5 Mashers after 6. The Lush tied it up in the 7th when Gary Sheffield doubled and was doubled in by Orlando Miller. But the Mashers were not done scoring, as in the bottom of the inning, Eric Young hit a 1 out single with runners at first and third to put Manhatten Beach up 7-6. The Lush found themselves in trouble again, loading the bases with 1 out before Norm Charlton plunked hitter Chris Snopek, forcing in another run. 8-6 Mashers after 7. Tim Crabtree pitched the top of the 9th, protecting a 2 run Masher lead. First batter up, Jim Thome, grounded out. Second batter, Sammy Sosa, struck out. Dewey Beach was looking to force a game seven. Manhatten Beach was looking to close out the series. Mashers pitcher Scott Sanders drove in the first run, singling in Tim Raines from 3rd base in the 2nd inning. The Lush evened it up by scoring a run in the top of the 5th, but the Mashers immediately responded by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. A similar scene repeated itself in the 6th inning, and Manhatten Beach found themselves up 5-2 after 6. In the 7th inning, the Mashers found themselves in trouble, loading the bases with Dewey Beach hitters with 1 out. Jim Thome grounded out, allowing a run to score to cut the lead to 2. The next batter, Sammy Sosa, showed why the Lush offense was so dangerous, going deep for a 3-run dinger. 6-5 Dewey Beach. The Mashers played catch-up in the 8th inning, when Kevin Young tied it up at 6 with a sacrifice fly. The game would remain tied 6-6 heading into the 9th inning. In the top of the 9th, Tim Crabtree was pitching for the Mashers. The first two batters, Craig Biggio and Frank Thomas, reached base on singles. Jim Thome reminded Manhatten Beach once again that their hitters were to be feared, taking Crabtree deep for a 3-run home run. 9-6 Dewey Beach. Terrell Wade pitched for the Lush in the bottom of the 9th, holding a 3-run lead. The first batter, Jeff Blauser, walked.
