The Mashers came out swinging in game three, hitting Reuter for 5 runs in the 1st with a 2-run home run by Mark McGwire and a 3-run shot by Kevin Young. The Maul prevented the game from being a blowout by scoring 4 of their own in the bottom of the inning, with a 3-run homer by Raul Mondesi and a solo home run from Will Clark. In the 3rd inning, Will Clark hit a 2 out single, and scored on a double by Dean Palmer. 5-5 ballgame after 3. Albuquerque scored again in the bottom of the 5th. Dean Palmer and John Flaherty reached base with 2 outs, advanced to 2nd & 3rd on a Ben McDonald wild pitch, and Palmer scored on a Delino DeShields single. The Mashers were not about to roll over and concede the game. In the top of the 8th inning, Brandt Brown and Mark Smith singled, and Eric Young hit a double, scoring Brown and tying up the game at 6. In the top of the 9th inning, Julian Tavarez was pitching for the Maul with the game tied. Pete Incaviglia hit a leadoff single. After Jeromy Burnitz hit a fly out, pinch hitter Chuck Carr hit into a double play. We would move to the bottom of the inning with a chance for Albuquerque to win the game. Chris Peters was pitching for the Mashers. First batter up, Randy Velarde, smacked a leadoff double. Tim Crabtree came on in relief to face Albert Belle. Despite Belle's poor post-season showing, they chose to walk him intentionally to face Raul Mondesi. Mondesi has had the hot bat this post-season, and it continued in game 3. Mondesi singled, scoring Velarde and winning the game. Albuqerque wins game 3 by a score of 7-6 to take the series lead. Mark McGwire hit a sacrifice fly, scoring O'Neill and cutting Albuquerque's lead to 1, but there were now 2 outs on the board. The Mashers' season now rested on the shoulders of Tim Naehring. Base hit. Representing the go-ahead run at the plate was Tim Raines. Raines has had a good post-season, would that continue in game 5? It was not to be. Raul Mondesi led all-post season hitters in RBI with 18, but the 1996 CDBL Post-Season MVP award goes to Maul center fielder Lance Johnson.
