1996 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Hong Kong Cavaliers (109-53, Gehrig Division Winner) vs. Orange Whoop (87-75, #2 League Wildcard) The Orange Whoop battled multiple teams for the last league wildcard spot before securing it in the final week. Juan Gonzalez and Jay Buhner were the "Bash Brothers" in the middle, hitting over 40 home runs, with 110+ RBI apiece. Jeff Cirillo hit .339 with 121 runs scored, while Kenny Lofton had 52 stolen bases, a .403 on base average and 97 runs scored. Mike Lansing popped 19 home runs with 99 RBI. Tom Glavine was an ace among aces, going 22-9 with a 3.25 ERA in 41 starts, while Jaime Navarro went 14-12. Closer Jeff Brantley saved 10 games with a 3.04 ERA. The Hong Kong Cavaliers finally put together their season to remember, winning the Gehrig division pennant and winning a league high 109 games. Ellis Burks hit .329 with 43 home runs, 121 runs scored and 135 RBI, while Brady Anderson hit 39 home runs with 110+ runs and RBI. Vinny Castilla cranked out 36 home runs and 94 RBI, while Roberto Alomar had a .393 on base average with 105 runs scored. Pedro Martinez was a stellar starter, going 21-4 with a 2.72 ERA. Danny Darwin went 15-7 with a 2.61 ERA, Donovan Osborne went 16-4 with a 2.85 ERA, and Hideo Nomo went 14-11 with a 3.37 (the staff ERA was easily the league's best at 3.41). Closer TJ Mathews saved 29 games with a 1.30 ERA, while Mark Guthrie saved 13 games. In 9 regular season games, the Cavaliers won the season series 5 games to 4. The Cavaliers have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Whoop (Glavine) at Cavaliers (Nomo). The first game in this series started off with two marquee hurlers. In the 4th inning, Juan Gonzalez scored the first run of the game with a solo home run. In the bottom of the inning, Ellis Burks and Ed Taubensee reached base before Carreon doubled in Burks and moved Taubensee to third. Vinny Castilla grounded out, allowing Taubensee to score and gave Hong Kong the 2-1 lead. Gonzalez struck again against the Cavaliers in the 8th inning, when he took Nomo deep with a 3-run shot. 4-3 Whoop. But the Cavaliers were not about to give up. In the bottom of the inning, with Mike James pitching, Cavalier first baseman Carlos Delgado took him deep with a runner on base, retaking the 5-4 lead. In the top of the 9th, Hong Kong closer TJ Mathews was on the mound, trying to protect a 1-run lead. Mathews struck out the first batter Joe Giradi. The same result happened to the second batter, Mark Sweeney. And, with the final batter Jim Leyritz, Mathews got him to fly out. Hong Kong hangs on to win game 1 by a score of 5-4. It was a case of the unstoppable force of Juan Gonzalez meeting the immovable object of Pedro Martinez in the first inning, but Gonzalez prevailed, hitting a solo home run. Jay Buhner showed a little unstoppable force action himself, hitting a home run on Martinez's very next pitch. 2-0 Whoop after the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, Todd Hundley drove in his first three runs with a 3 run home run. Hundley also hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd in a 3-run inning to make it 6-2 after 3. The Whoop cut into the lead in the 5th inning. With Charlie Hayes on base, Kurt Stillwell hit an RBI single. With 2 men on base, Jeff Cirillo doubled in Stillwell, and Juan Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to cut Hong Kong's lead to 1. 6-5 after 5. Michael Tucker extended the Cavaliers lead to 2 with a solo home run in the 6th, but Jeff Cirillo narrowed it back down to a 1-run game in the 7th when he drove in Kenny Lofton with a single. TJ Mathews pitched the top of the 9th for Hong Kong with the game 7-6 in their favor. The first batter up, Jim Leyritz, struck out. Kenny Lofton walked. Jeff Cirillo reached base when a ground ball to defensive replacement Tomas Perez was bobbled. 2 on, 1 out, and the "Bash Bro's" were to make their appearance at the plate. The Whoop found themselves in trouble in the 7th, when Glavine loaded the bases with 0 outs. Rod Myers grounded out, scoring a run. Then, Brady Anderson grounded out, scoring another run and tying it up at 2. Mike Durant hit a grounder to Charlie Hayes, who couldn't handle it. Another runner scored, and the Cavaliers were up 3-2. In the 7th, Kenny Lofton hit a 0 out single. Then stole second. Then stole third, and scored when Ed Taubensee misthrew the ball in an attempt to get Lofton out. 3-3 ballgame. Jay Buhner gave the Whoop the 4-3 lead with a solo home run. Hong Kong tied it up in the top of the 8th, when Casey Candaele hit a 2 out RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, the Cavaliers had a comedy (or tragedy, depending how you look at it) of errors. With Mike Lansing on first, Lance Painter tried to pick him off at first, but threw the ball away. Lansing moved to second. Next, Joe Giradi hit a sacrifice bunt, moving Lansing over to third. With 2 outs, Jim Leyritz hit a bouncer to Greg Gagne, who bobbled it. Lansing scored, and the Whoop took the 5-4 lead. Rafael Carmona pitched for the Whoop in the top of the 9th with a 1-run lead. First batter up, Roberto Alomar, grounded out. As did Ellis Burks. With 2 outs, Todd Hundley singled, putting the go-ahead run, Carlos Delgado, at the plate. But Delgado would not be able to do anything in his at-bat, striking out to end the game. The Whoop wins game five by a score of 5-4.
