Martinez threw 258 innings, 4th best in the league, 21 wins (tied for second best), a 2.72 ERA (3rd best), and struck out 251 batters (4th best). Martinez was near unhittable, holding batters to a league best .206 batting average, and a league best 9.4 runners per 9 innings. ******************************************************************* 1996 Fireman of the Year Award 2nd runner up - TJ Mathews, Hong Kong Cavaliers P ERA OPS OPSvL OPSvR W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP BF mr 1.30 .540 .654 .455 7 4 29 65 0 0 0 69.0 45 12 10 27 57 6 1 280 Mathews was a great closer on a great pennant winning team. Hoffman's 31 saves was third best in the league, and his 1.17 ERA was best among all pitchers with at least 69 innings pitched. Hoffman's 93.9% save percentage was 2nd best in the leagues. ************************************ 1996 CDBL Fireman of the Year - Greg McMichael, Albuquerque Maul P ERA OPS OPSvL OPSvR W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP BF mr 2.20 .586 .710 .459 8 4 37 73 0 0 0 81.2 61 22 20 33 66 4 7 336 The Maul won 91 games and made the playoffs, despite actually having a run differential of -5 runs. A lot of that was due to the pitching of Greg McMichael. The Maul were 10-4 in tied ballgames after 7 innings, 28-17 in 1-run games and 11-4 in extra inning games. McMichael led the league in saves with 37, and had 8 wins as well. His 81 2/3 innings was 2nd best among relievers with at least 20 saves. McMichael's 56 games finished was 2nd best among relievers. McMichael put up good stats... not necessarily the very best in stats, but good enough to make a significant difference for his team.
