1995 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 - Springfield Isotopes (99-63) (HFA) vs. (3) Dewey Beach Lush (90-72) Springfield has been a Paige division juggernaut, winning at least 95 games each of the last 4 years. Barry Bonds had another great year, hitting 37 home runs, stealing 47 bases, scoring 142 runs, and driving in 124 RBI. Mark Grace scored 127 runs, while Bernie Williams hit .327 with 129 runs scored and 100 RBI. Catcher Mike Stanley hit 33 home runs with 100+ runs and RBI. Pitcher Mark Gubicza went 18-10 with a 3.29 ERA, while Curt Schilling was 11-4 with a 2.35 ERA. Tom Gordon finished the year 14-9. Dewey Beach had the hit patrol this year, setting records for home runs and RBI. Craig Biggio finished the year hitting .307 with 164 runs scored, 33 home runs and 35 stolen bases. Frank Thomas slugged .571 with 51 home runs, 131 runs scored and 146 RBI. Jim Thome, Larry Walker, Ron Gant and Sammy Sosa all hit at least 30 home runs and scored at least 100 runs. Despite a 5.87 ERA, pitcher Chris Bosio finished the season 14-10. Reliever Doug Henry went 7-1 with 7 saves and a 2.37 ERA. In 12 regular season games, the Lush won the season series 7 games to 5, but the Isotopes have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Lush (Leiter) at Isotopes (Gubicza). Larry Walker got this series off to a rousing start, taking a Gubicza pitch deep in the 2nd inning for a quick 1-0 Dewey Beach lead. The Isotopes scored in the third, when Rey Sanchez singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Gubicza single. 1-1 ballgame. In the 4th, the Lush got offense from some surprising sources, as Danny Sheaffer hit a 2-run home run, followed by a solo shot from Mark Leiter. 4-1 Dewey Beach. Springfield chipped away at Dewey Beach's lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, when Jody Reed hit a leadoff solo home run and Mike Stanley hit an infield RBI single with 2 outs and runners at 2nd and third to cut the Lush lead to 1. Stanley provided the offense again in the 7th inning, hitting a 2-out solo home run to tie up the ballgame at 4. The game remained tied at 4 through 9 innings. Going into extra innings, it was merely a question of who would get that clutch hit. As it turns out, it would be Barry Bonds. In the bottom of the 10th, with Mike Stanley on base, Bonds took Doug Henry deep, with a game winning 2 run home run. Springfield wins game 1 by a score of 6-4. Springfield padded their lead in the 5th with 2 more runs on an RBI single by Al Martin and an RBI double by Tim Wallach. 6-1 Springfield after 5 innings. The Lush are a dangerous team on offense, and it finally showed in the 6th inning when they scored 4 runs, led by a 3-run home run by Gary Sheffield. Then, in the 7th with the score being 7-5 Isotopes, Ron Gant hit a solo home run, Larry Walker an RBI double and Orlando Miller an RBI single to give the Lush the 8-7 lead. Ron Gant tripled in Craig Biggio in the 8th inning to give Dewey Beach a 2-run lead. Doug Henry pitched the 9th for the save. Dewey Beach scores 8 runs in 3 innings to power their way to a 9-7 victory in game two. In the top of the first, the Lush pounded out 5 runs before the first out was recorded and finished with 6 for the inning. Up 7-3 by the third inning, Dewey Beach blasted 5 more runs in the 4th. Springfield answered with 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning, but the game was still well out of reach at 12-6 Dewey Beach. Springfield chipped away at Dewey Beach's lead in the 6th. With runners at first and third, John Habyan threw a wild pitch, scoring Mark Grace. 2 batters later, Habyan misplayed an Ozzie Timmons ground ball, allowing another runner to score. With 2 outs, Rey Sanchez and Juan Samuel hit consecutive RBI singles, cutting the Lush's lead to 2. The game remained 12-10 heading into the bottom of the 9th. Springfield had 3 outs to score 2 or more runs in order to move on in the series. Otherwise, it would go to a final game seven. Doug Henry pitched for Dewey Beach. First batter up, Rey Sanchez, singled. Pinch hitter Brad Ausmus walked. The next batter, representing the winning run, Bernie Williams, hit a grounder to Craig Biggio... who bobbled it. Third Dewey Beach error of the game, and the bases were loaded with 0 outs. Mark Grace was up to the plate. A single could very well win it. But Grace went one better. With a 1-0 pitch, Grace took Henry deep. Grand slam home run! And with that, Springfield wins game six by a score of 14-12, and advance to the AP conference finals.
