Martinez led the league in average, on base average, hits, doubles, was 2nd in slugging, 3rd in runs, 5th in RBI, 3rd in walks, and tops in runs created and runs created per 27 outs. So why isn't Martinez MVP? Largely because the Bulldog pitching let the rest of the team down this year, posting a 5.24 ERA to slow them down to a .500 record this year. Still, one of the best performances of the year. ***************** 1995 CDBL MVP: Albert Belle, Albuquerque Maul P Age AVG OBP SPC SBSLG VAL AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI HBP BB K SB CS lf 28 0.317 0.438 0.694 0.694 49.109 589 187 59 2 53 146 132 9 124 94 5 5 Ah, big bad Albert Belle. The surly slugger posted some gaudy stats this year, leading the league in slugging, 4th in on base average, 2nd in doubles, 2nd in home runs, first in extra base hits, and top ten in walks, runs and RBI. Even more impressive was his 49 intentional walks, more than twice that of the 2nd highest total. Is that a reflection of Belle's fearsome statue or the relatively mediocre players hitting behind him? Either way, Belle's big season was put to good use, powering the Maul to a share of the Gehrig division pennant. ********************************* ********************************* 1995 CDBL CY YOUNG AWARD 2ND RUNNER UP: Kevin Appier, Arkham Investigators P Age ERA OPS VAL W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP sp 27 2.86 0.632 32.16 20 8 0 39 37 3 2 251.2 188 90 80 112 240 16 26 Appier put in another stellar performance, helping the Arkham Investigators make it to the playoffs.
