1994 CDBL FIREMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD 2ND RUNNER UP -- Eric Plunk, San Diego Stars P ERA OPS OPSvL OPSvR W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP BF mr 3.32 .670 .719 .613 4 9 35 78 0 0 0 95.0 87 39 35 39 76 6 13 397 Plunk did just about everything you could ask for for a closer on a pennant winning team. His 35 saves were best in the league, and his 3.32 ERA was respectable. His only knock would be a seeming lack of clutch play .. if some of those 9 losses were converted to wins with a key strikeout, the Stars would have been able to win their conference outright. ***** 1ST RUNNER UP -- Doug Jones, Boston Bulldogs P ERA OPS OPSvL OPSvR W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP BF cl 1.71 .584 .698 .437 5 3 31 59 0 0 0 68.1 73 18 13 11 50 2 4 295 Jones was super-closer in 1994. His 1.71 ERA was the best among the leagues in saves, and his 5-3 record showed when the game was tied his pitching won more games than lost. What more could you ask for? ***** 1994 CDBL FIREMAN OF THE YEAR -- Ken Ryan, Albuquerque Maul P ERA OPS OPSvL OPSvR W L S G GS CG SHO INN H R ER BB K HR GDP BF cl 1.92 .577 .604 .549 7 3 27 64 0 0 0 79.2 64 19 17 25 61 1 13 315 Ryans stats were pretty good. His 27 saves were among the league leaders, as was his 1.92 ERA, and his 7-3 winning record was impressive. But Ryan gets the award this year because of the effect his pitching had on the team's record in close games. The Maul's league best 31-14 record in 1 run games and 11-5 record in extra inning games had a lot to do with Ryan's pitching. When the game was on the line, Ryan pitched well and shut the other team down.
