1994 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW AARON/PAIGE CONFERENCE FINALS Manhatten Beach Mashers (97-65, AP Conf Wildcard, 4-3 over Isotopes in Round 1) vs. Arkham Investigators (106-56, Aaron Division Winner) The Mashers found themselves down 0-3 in their first round series with the Isotopes before using their mighty offense to power their way to a 7 game series victory. Sandy Alomar Jr is having a playoffs to remember, hitting .296 with a .963 slugging average, 6 home runs and 18 RBI in 7 games. Mike Kingery is hitting .429 with 7 runs scored, and Paul O'Neill and Kevin Mitchell are each hitting over .300 with 7 runs scored. Tim Wallach is hitting .423 with 6 runs scored and 7 RBI. Steve Ontiveros is 1-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 2 starts, while Danny Jackson is 1-0 with a 3.14 ERA in 2 starts. Reliever Billy Brewer has yet to give up a run or hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Arkham established themselves as the team to beat early on, and finished with a league best 106-56 record. Ken Griffey Jr had one of the best seasons ever seen by a hitter, hitting .343 with 67 home runs, 138 runs scored and 176 RBI. Robin Ventura slugged .535 with 38 home runs, 114 runs scored and 124 RBI. Tony Phillips had a .383 on base average, 28 home runs and 135 runs scored. As good as the hitters were, the pitchers were even better. Their 3.48 ERA was easily best in the league. Bret Saberhagen finished with a 25-4 record and a 2.95 ERA. Jose Rijo went 16-9 with a 3.35 ERA, while Kevin Appier went 18-8 with a 3.51 ERA. Closer Mel Rojas won 7 games, saved 23 and had a 3.21 ERA. In 12 regular season games, the Investigators won the season matchup 8-4. Arkham has home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Mashers (Jackson) at Investigators (Rijo). The explosive Masher offense flexed their muscle in the 1st inning, as 3 straight hits scored 2 runs, and a 2 out single & fielder error scored another for a 3-0 Masher lead after 1. The Investigators started working their way back in the bottom of the 1st. With 1 out, Geronimo Berroa singled, moved to 3rd on a Ken Griffey Jr double, and scored on a Reggie Sanders sacrifice fly. In the 5th inning, Robin Ventura reached 2nd base when Tim Wallach misthrew the ball to first on what should have been a routine groundout. Jose Rijo grounded out, moving Ventura to third. Tony Phillips grounded out, allowing Ventura to score. 3-2 Manhatten Beach. In the bottom of the 7th, Alan Trammell hit an infield single. The next batter, Mike Macfarlane, doubled, scoring Trammell and evening up the game at 3. With 2 outs, and a runner at 3rd, Tony Phillips singled, scoring Macfarlane and gave Arkham the 4-3 lead, their first of the game. Arkam would add an insurance run in the 8th to give them the 5-3 lead. Mel Rojas pitched for the Investigators at the top of the 9th, with a 2-run lead. The first batter up, Sandy Alomar Jr, reached 2nd base when an errant throw by Ken Griffey Jr sailed past David McCarty's glove. Mark McGwire struck out, and Kevin Mitchell grounded out to put 2 outs on the board. It was now up to Tim Wallach. Mel Rojas helped the Masher's cause by throwing a wild pitch during their matchup, moving Alomar to 3rd. Wallach followed up a 3-2 pitch with a single. Alomar scored. In the excitement, Reggie Sanders mishandled the ball, allowing Wallach to 2nd base. 5-4 Investigators, and the tying run at 2nd. Representing the go-ahead run at the plate was Tim Naehring. Would Naehring provide late inning heroics? Not in game one. Naehring grounded out to 2nd, ending the game. Arkham wins game 1 by a score of 5-4. The Mashers cut the lead to 1 in the 5th inning, when with a runner on third, Mickey Morandini hit a grounder to Alan Trammel, who couldn't quite handle it. Error to the shortstop, and it was a 2-1 ballgame. Paul O'Neill hit a solo home run in the 7th to tie up the ballgame. Neither team would score in the 8th or 9th innings, and the game would go into overtime. The Investigators made the first move in extra innings. Mike Macfarlane hit a solo shot to put them ahead 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, the Mashers would have to score at least one run to keep the game going. Mel Rojas was on the mound for Arkham. Mike Kingery hit a leadoff double. Kevin Mitchell would make the Investigators pay for that error, hitting a 2-out home run for a 2-0 Masher lead. Arkham cut the lead to 1 when Ken Griffey Jr "double played" in a run in the bottom of the 4th. In the 6th inning, the Investigators struck again. With 2 on, Wally Joyner hit a single, scoring a run and tying the game up at 2. The next batter, Mike Macfarlane, also singled, scoring Ken Griffey Jr and giving Arkham the 3-2 lead. Manhatten Beach tied it up in the 8th when Mickey Morandini walked, moved to third on a Mike Kingery double, and scored on a Sandy Alomar Jr sacrifice fly. 3-3 ballgame. The game would remain tied at 3 heading into the 9th inning. 162 regular season games, and multiple playoff games boiled down to 1 inning of frenzied activity. The Mashers were up first. Kevin Appier was still in the game and pitching for the Investigators. First batter up, Kevin Mitchell, struck out. Next up, Tim Wallach singled. Then, with Wallach at first, pinch hitter Rich Becker hit into an inning ending double play. Arkham would go to the bottom of the 9th with 3 chances to win the series. Mike Fetters was on the mound for the Mashers in the bottom of the 9th. The first batter up, Reggie Sanders, struck out. The next batter, Greg Gagne, struck out too. 2 quick outs. It was all up to pinch hitter Gerald Williams. A home run would win it. A single or walk would extend the inning. Williams shook off any nerves he might have had, getting a base hit up the middle. Fetters was relieved, and closer Josias Manzanillo walked to the pitcher's mound. The next batter up was Tony Phillips, who was responsible for the fielding error which allowed 2 unearned Masher runs to score earlier in the game. Would Phillips redeem himself? Not exactly, but he did hit a 2-out single, moving Williams to 3rd. The next batter, Robin Ventura, walked to load the bases. Bases loaded, 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th in a series deciding game seven in a playoff series. Who is up to bat? Ken Griffey Jr. Griffey was the hero of game six, hitting a 3-run home run in late innings to win that game. And he had another opportunity to win the game and the series for the Investigators. A walk or a hit would win it. Unfortunately for Arkham, Griffey could not come through, grounding out to short and leaving the game tied at 3. The game would go to extra innings. The Mashers failed to put a runner on base in the top of the 10th, so the Investigators had another 3 chances to win the game. Heathcliff Slocumb was pitching for the Mashers. Wally Joyner flied out for out #1. The next batter, Mike Macfarlane, was hit by a pitch and awarded first base for his efforts. After Macfarlane, veteran Tom Brunansky hit a single, moving Macfarlane to 3rd. But Reggie Sanders and Greg Gagne couldn't seal the deal, lining out and striking out respectively to end the inning with the score still tied at 3. In the top of the 11th inning, Investigators reliever Storm Davis was working on his 2nd inning. First batter up, Paul O'Neill, singled. As did Sandy Alomar Jr. 2 runners on, no outs. Mark McGwire grounded out, advancing the runners to 2nd and third. Kevin Mitchell walked to load the bases with 1 out. The next batter up, Tim Wallach, hit a ground ball to Tony Phillips. The same Tony Phillips whose prior fielding error cost the Investigators 2 runs. What happens? Phillips can't handle the ball ... again. O'Neill scores, putting the Mashers up 4-3. The next batter, Rafael Bournigal, sacrifice bunted Alomar home. 5-3 Mashers, with 4 of those runs occurring from Tony Phillips errors. Heading into the bottom of the 11th inning, the Investigators now had 3 chances to decide the final outcome of the game. Heathcliff Slocumb was still pitching for the Mashers. The first batter up, Scott Fletcher, struck out. Next up, Tony Phillips. Would the fielding goat of game seven be a batting hero? Not in the 11th inning. Phillips flied out to center field. It was now down to Robin Ventura to save the Investigator's season. But it was not to be. Ventura grounded out to the shortstop, ending the game and the Investigators' season.
