They battled the expansion Kamados to 7 games before emerging victorious. Robin Ventura is having a hot post-season, hitting .364 with a .909 slugging average, 3 home runs, 4 runs scored and 9 RBI. Springfield came out swinging in this opening game of the conference finals. They put up 2 runs in the first, and hit solo back to back home runs in the 3rd to put them up 4-0 after 2 1/2 innings. Ken Griffey Jr singled in Ron Karkovice in the 3rd to cut the Isotope lead to 3. Then Ken Griffey Jr. hit a 2-run home run in the 5th to hit the Isotope lead to 1. 4-3 Springfield after 5. Mike Stanley singled in Greg Vaughn in the 8th to provide an insurance run, but Ken Griffey Jr. kept the pressure up in the bottom of the inning, hitting another home run to make it 5-4 Isotopes. Springfield entered the bottom of the 9th holding onto a 1 run lead. Rich Rodriguez was in the mound. The first batter up, Robin Ventura, singled. Scott Service replaced Rodriguez on the mound. The next batter, Greg Gagne, struck out. 1 out. Ron Karkovice was up. With a runner at first, Karkovice hit into a game ending double play. Ken Griffey Jr has been hot all series long, and game 5 was no exception. In the 3rd, Griffey drove in the first runs of the game with a 3 run homer. Arkham held Springfield to a comfortable distance throughout the game, springing to a 8-2 lead after 8 1/2 innings (Griffey hit another 3 run home run in the 9th inning). Springfield would have to try and save their season by scoring at least 6 runs in 1/2 an inning. Springfield got off to a good start in the bottom of the 9th, as Dave Hollins, Barry Bonds and Mark Grace all walked to load the bases with 0 outs. Pinch hitter Juan Samuel struck out for out #1. The next batter, Brent Gates, singled, scoring 2 runs and moved Grace to third. Storm Davis came on in relief. Mike Stanley hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Grace. 3 run Arkham lead. Bernie Williams hit a 2-out infield single, putting runners at first and second and brought the batter representing the tying run, pinch hitter Dave Staton, to the plate. Scott Radinsky came on in relief. Staton was replaced even before he could get a practice swing up with Brad Ausmus. Would the switch pay off? Not in 1993. Ausmus flied out to right, ending the game and the Isotopes' season. Arkham wins game 5 by a score of 8-5, and advance to the CDBL World Series.
