1993 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW California Kamados (97-65 #1 league WC, 4-2 over Thunder in Round 0) vs. Arkham Investigators (102-60, Aaron division pennant winner) California can consider their 1993 campaign a success, winning 97 games in their first year of existance to nab the #1 league wildcard. In their opening round 0 series against Thunder, they rode a high powered offense to a series victory in 6 games. Damion Easley is hitting .615 with 5 runs scored in 13 bat bats, while Tim Teufel is hitting .583 with 6 RBI in 12 at bats. As a whole the team is hitting .276 with a .479 slugging average. On the pitching side, Chris Bosio has 6 2/3 shutout innings in his start, and Steve Bedrosian is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 3 games pitched. Arkham put up another great year, winning a share of the Aaron division pennant and tying for the league's best record. Ken Griffey Jr. had a banner year, hitting .352 with 50 home runs, 145 runs scored and 151 RBI. Reggie Sanders hit 29 home runs with 110 RBI. Tony Phillips and Robin Ventura each scored over 100 runs. Kevin Appier won 21 games with a 2.65 ERA, while Danny Darwin won 20 with a 3.59 ERA. Jose Rijo was "only" the 3rd best pitcher on the staff with a 17-10 record and a 3.34 ERA. Joe Grahe and Scott Radinsky combined to save 30 games. In 12 regular season games, the Kamados bettered the Investigators 7 games to 5. Arkham has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Kamados (Swift) at Investigators (Appier). A bit of a homecoming for Kamados ace Bill Swift, who used to play for Arkham before being nabbed in the expansion draft. Arkham welcomed him back with a leadoff walk by Tony Phillips. Mike Aldrete singled, and Tony Phillips moved to third on an error by Al Martin (who is no stranger to errors in the post-season). A Ken Griffey Jr sacrifice fly scored Phillips and gave Arkham a 1-0 lead. The lead wasn't to last long, as Mike Macfarlane tied it up in the 2nd with a solo home run. In the bottom of the 8th, deja vu struck again. Tony Phillips got a leadoff walk. With 2 runners on base, Wally Joyner hit a fly ball to Al Martin .. who dropped it again. Bases loaded. With 2 outs in the inning, Robin Ventura doubled, scoring 2 runs and gave Arkham a 3-1 lead, with all 3 runs unearned. California had 3 outs to manufacture at least 2 runs. In the top of the 9th, Scott Radinsky was closing for the Investigators. Pinch hitter Dave Gallagher doubled and moved to third by an error from Reggie Sanders. With runners at first and third, Radinsky balked, scoring a runner from third. A second balk moved a Kamado to third base, who scored on a single by pinch hitter Mark Whiten (who was hitting for Al Martin, denying Martin a chance for redemption). 3-3 ballgame heading into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, the Kamados put themselves into excellent position for scoring some runs, loading the bases with 1 out. But Dave Gallagher struck out and Lance Blankenship grounded out to short, killing the rally and giving the Investigators 3 shots to take game 1 in the bottom of the inning. Duane Ward was closing for the Kamados, one of the best closers in the game. Mike Aldrete and Ken Griffey Jr each grounded out to short to put 2 outs on the board. It was up to Wally Joyner to make something happen. And something is what he did, hitting a walk off home run. Arkham wins an error-prone game 4-3 in extra innings to take the opening game of the series. It looked like curtains for California, as Arkham hit them hard and early, scoring 3 runs in the first and 2 in the third for a 5-0 lead. Arkham was nursing a 5-1 lead heading into the 8th when California came roaring back. With 2 runners on board, Mike Macfarlane hit a deep double, scoring a run. The next batter, Phil Plantier, smashed a 3-run home run, tying the game up at 5. Neither side could score in the 9th inning, and we would go to extra innings for the second game in a row. In the top of the 10th, California had a chance to score with runners at first and third with 2 outs, but Orestes Destrade stuck out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, with 1 out, Arkham had a repeat of game 1, with Reggie Sanders hitting a walk off home run off Steve Bedrosian to win it. Arkham wins game 2 by a score of 6-5 in 10 innings. This game would determine who went to the AP conference finals. Calfornia got off to the early start with an Al Martin RBI double in the 1st inning. In the 3rd, Lou Whitaker reached base on an error by Wally Joyner. The following batter, Lance Blankenship, made Joyner pay for his mistake, hitting a rare home run to make it 3-0 Kamados. A score in the 4th and 6th innings made it 5-0 California and quieted the native Arkham crowd. The Investigators made a comeback in the bottom of the 6th inning. With the bases loaded with 0 outs, Wally Joyner grounded out to 2nd, allowing a runner to score. With 2 outs, Willie Wilson singled, clearing the bases of remaining runners and cut the Kamado lead to 2. In the 7th inning, Greg Gagne hit a leadoff double and scored on a Reggie Sanders single. 1 run game. 2 singles later put runners at first and third. A sacrifice fly by Robin Ventura tied up the game. With 2 outs and 2 on in the inning, Ron Karkovice singled, scoring 2 runners and gave Arkham the 7-5 lead. Arkham's hit parade continued in the 8th with 3 more runs. Scott Radinsky closed out the 9th. California had a good run in the post-season, but they were unable to contain the hit machine of the Investigators. Arkham wins game 7 by a score of 10-5, and advance to the AP conference finals.
