1992 CDBL Playoff Preview: Manhatten Beach Mashers (112-50, Aaron division champs) vs. Dewey Beach Lush (94-68, AP Conf wildcard) Dewey Beach's youth movement has started to pay off. Young 3B Gary Sheffield hit 34 home runs with 106 runs scored and 122 RBI. 1B Frank Thomas hit .295 with 106 runs scored. Larry Walker drove in 104 runs. Veteran Candy Maldonado contributed 28 home runs, 92 runs scored and 104 RBI. Starter Kevin Gross went 21-7 with a 3.28 ERA, while Dave Fleming finished the season with a 17-9 record and a 2.84 ERA. Closer duties were split between Xavier Hernandez and Doug Jones, who combined to win 13 games and save 38 games. Manhatten Beach put up one of the most dominanting seasons on record. Bash brothers Mark McGwire and Rob Deer combined to smack 93 home runs and drive in 258 runs. 3B Dave Hollins scored 132 runs and drove in 86. Rickey Henderson sported a .405 on base average with 97 runs scored and 105 RBI. Despite tying the league record for wins, no starter won 20 games. Tom Candiotti went 17-5 with a 2.74 ERA, Dennis Martinez was 15-9 with a 2.39 ERA, and Danny Jackson went 15-8. Closer Mike Fetters won 8 games and saved 32. In 8 regular season contests the Mashers lost to the Lush 5 games to 3, but have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dewey Beach (Gross) at Manhatten Beach (Martinez). The pitchers were in control in game one. So much so, that both teams were held scoreless through 9 innings. In the top of the 10th, the Lush had a chance to score with the bases loaded and 1 out, but pinch hitter Todd Benzinger hit into a inning ending, non-scoring double play. The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the 12th inning, when Mark McGwire hit a walk-off home run off of Doug Jones. Manhatten Beach wins game 1 by a score of 1-0. In the bottom of the 8th, Jay Bell hit a solo home run. 8-7 Dewey Beach. Heading into the top of the 9th, Dewey Beach held onto a slim 1 run lead. Doug Jones was on in relief. Rick Wilkins hit a leadoff single and was replaced on the basepaths by Eric Davis. Consecutive groundouts put 2 outs on the board but allowed Davis to move to 3rd. It was now up to Dave Hollins. Down 1-3, the Lush had to win this one to stay alive. From the early stages of the game it looked like that wasn't going to happen. Manhatten Beach scored 4 runs by the 4th and were leading 6-1 after 6 1/2 innings. Dewey Beach made a run in the 7th with a bases loaded situation. Sheffield hit an infield single, scoring a run. Candy Maldanado was plunked by a pitch, forcing another run in. Larry Walker and Sammy Sosa drove in additional runs to make it 6-5 Mashers. The game remained 6-5 in favor of Manhatten Beach heading into the bottom of the 9th inning. Closer Mike Fetters was pitching. First batter up, Gary Sheffield, walked. Gerald Young replaced Sheffield on the basepaths. Maldonado flied out for out #1. Young made the most of his pinch running spot, stealing 2nd. That resulted in Larry Walker being intentionally walked. Young attempted to steal 3rd, but was thrown out (Walker moved to 2nd in the chaos). 2 outs. With Sammy Sosa at bat, Fetters balked, sending Walker to 3rd. Sosa needed a hit or a walk to keep the game alive, and he chose hit. Walker scored, and the game was tied at 6. We would go to extra innings. The 10th-12th innings were blanks. The Mashers scored once in the 13th, and the Lush responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning to prolong the game. 7-7 ballgame. In the 14th inning, 2 singles and a sacrifice fly gave the Mashers the lead again, making it 8-7. Heading into the bottom of the inning, Dewey Beach needed to score at least 1 run to prolong their season. Vince Palacos was pitching for the Mashers. The hero of the 9th, Sammy Sosa, grounded out. Casey Candaele flied out for out #2. It was now down to shortstop Jay Bell. Bell singled, placing the tying run at first, and the representing the winning run, Dave Valle, was at bat. At least for a moment. Valle popped out at first, ending the game and the Lush's season. Manhatten Beach wins in extra innings, 8-7, and advance to the AP conference finals.
