1992 CDBL Playoff Preview: Arkham Investigators (105-57, AP Conf Wildcard) vs. Springfield Isotopes (102-60, Paige division winner). Arkham has been at the pinnacle of contending for several years now, and '92 is no exception. Ken Griffey Jr emerged as a force, hitting 23 home runs with 135 RBI. 2B Tony Phillips had a .364 on base average with 114 runs scored, while 3B Robin Ventura had 92 runs scored. The starting pitchers had it going on, with Jose Rijo going 19-7, Bill Swift 17-10 and Kevin Appier at 22-7. Their 2.79 team ERA was league best. Storm Davis was a bit of an unconventional closer with a fairly high 3.63 ERA, but that didn't stop him from saving a league high 36 games. Springfield is just starting to hit their stride. Barry Bonds had a smashing year, hitting 10 triples, 32 home runs, 124 runs scored and 105 RBI with 41 stolen bases. The perfect blend of speed and power (for these years at least!) Rookie Pat Listach sported a .336 batting average, .379 on base average, 107 runs scored and 50 stolen bases. Greg Vaughn was the other big bat, hitting 30 home runs with 126 RBI. Melido Perez was among the elite pitchers this year, going 23-6 with a 2.45 ERA. Curt Schlling went 17-10. Closer Dennis Eckersley won 8 games in relief and saved 33 with a tiny 1.94 ERA. The two teams battled to a 4-4 tie in the regular season. Still, Arkham was down 1-0 heading into the top of the 9th, with just 3 outs to score a few runs. Schilling was working on a shutout. The first batter up, Mark Leonard, singled. Dickie Thon was put in as a pinch runner. After a Kevin Maas strikeout, Wes Chamberlain singled, putting 2 men on. Tony Phillips struck out. 2 outs. It was now down to Shane Mack to try and extend the game. And extend he did. A key single scored Thon from 2nd, tying the ballgame. Ken Griffey Jr was at the plate for the win, but he struck out. Still, the game was now tied and Springfield went to the bottom of the 9th with 3 chances to win the game outright. Arkham closer Storm Davis pitched the bottom of the 9th. The first two batters were retired without much effort. But the final batter, Jeff Blauser, got the better of him. 2 out solo home run, and Springfield wins game two with the last at bat.
