1990 CDBL Playoffs Preview Montreal Mashers (112-50, Aaron Division Pennant) vs. Point Lomas Friars (95-67, League Wildcard) The Aaron division was dominant over the rest of the league this year, with 3 of the teams seeing post-season action. This first round series features a battle between 2 of those teams. The 1990 Montreal Mashers are a well-oiled machine. Their 112 wins was a league record, as was their batting, on base and slugging average. Rickey Henderson hit .325 with 29 home runs, 130 runs scored, and 58 stolen bases. Kal Daniels hit 31 home runs with 105 runs scored and 104 RBI. Ellis Burks hit 27 home runs with 121 RBI, and SS Alan Trammell hit .301 with 113 runs scored. The Mashers sported not one, but two elite closers in Dennis Eckersley and Rob Dibble. Between them they posted 160 innings of relief, 16 wins, 32 saves and ERA's below 2.0. Frank Viola won 19 games as a starter, and Bobby Witt was 17-7 with a 3.20 ERA. The Friars faced some stiff competition in a division with two 100+ game winners, but held their own to nab the league wildcard. The hitting was based around Eddie Murray (.343 average, 111 runs and 106 RBI) and 2B Ryne Sandberg (28 home runs, 98 runs scored, 108 RBI). Longtime star outfielder Tim Raines scored 87 runs with 67 stolen bases. Starter Bud Black was their rock this year, going 17-9 with a 3.33 ERA. Alejandro Pena was 7-1 with 15 saves and a 1.72 ERA, while Keith Comstock saved 26 games as the primary closer. In 12 games this year, Montreal won the season series 9-3. The Mashers have home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Friars (Tudor) at Mashers (McDonald). Point Lomas was backed up against the wall, down 0-3 in the series. This was a must-win situation for them. The two teams traded home run salvoes in the early innings. Fisk with a 2-run shot in the top of the 2nd, and Sandberg and Calderon hitting solo homers in the bottom of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Tim Raines singled and stole 2nd. Eddie Murray walked, and the two runners proceeded to perform a double steal. Ryne Sandberg hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a runner to give Point Lomas the 3-2 lead. Montreal evened it up in the 4th with a solo home run by Rob Deer. Starting out in the 5th inning, Bip Roberts hit a ball to left field. Rickey Henderson misplayed it and Roberts wound up at 2nd on the error. Tim Raines doubled, scoring the unearned run and giving Point Lomas the 4-3 lead. The Mashers tied it right back up in the 6th, when Carlton Fisk scored on a fielder's choice. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 8th, the Mashers started bringing out the heavy artillery. Rob Dibble made his first appearance of the post-season. The Friars did not bat an eyelash. Sandberg signled. Karl Rhodes walked. Ivan Calderon singled, scoring Sandberg. Point Lomas took the 5-4 lead. Alejandro Pena was on the mound for Point Lomas, aiming to get 3 outs while protecting a 1-run lead. Didn't quite happen that way. First batter up, Alan Trammell, took Pena deep with a solo home run. 5-5 ballgame. Point Lomas failed to score in the bottom of the 9th, so the game would go into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Ellis Burks hit a fly ball to Ivan Calderon, but the ball went through his legs to put Burks at second base on the error. 1 out. A single by any of the next two batters would give Montreal the lead, but Keith Comstock struck out Javier Ortiz and Pat Tabler to end the inning. 5-5 ballgame. As if facing Rob Dibble wasn't bad enough, the Friars now had to face Montreal's other fireballer, Dennis Eckersley. Eddie Murray hit a blooper off Eck. The ball careened towards Kal Daniels, then at Daniels, then behind Daniels. Error to the outfielder, and Murray arrived at 2nd base on the error. With 0 outs. Ryne Sandberg singled, moving Murray to 3rd. Now up to bat was Mike Blowers, facing Dennis Eckersley in a double play situation .. but with 0 outs. Anything short of a K and the Friars would win. Blowers got the ball past the infield, and that was the ballgame. Murray scored from 3rd. Point Lomas wins game 4 by a score of 6 to 5, and live to fight another day. Point Lomas staved off elimination in game four. Would they continue the trend in game five, or would Montreal advance to the AP conference finals? Ben McDonald helped his own cause out in the top of the 2nd, when he doubled in Pat Tabler to score the first run of the game. In the bottom of the third, with runners at 2nd & 3rd, Bip Roberts grounded out, scoring a run and tying the game up at 1. McDonald found himself in trouble in the 5th, loading the bases with 0 outs. The next batter up, Friars pitcher John Tudor, struck out. Bip Roberts hit a grounder to Rob Deer at first, who threw home for the out. Bases still loaded, but no one scored and there were 2 outs. The Mashers would not go unscathed in the inning, as Raines walked, forcing in a run to give the Friars the 2-1 lead, but that was all for the inning. Eddie Murray struck out to end the 5th. Montreal quickly evened things up in the 6th with a solo shot by Rob Deer. 2-2. In the 7th inning, with McDonald on the mound, pinch hitter Oscar Azocar (Os-car! Az-o-car!) singled. Bip Roberts walked. Tim Raines walked. Bases loaded situation again, only this time there were 2 outs. McDonald faced Eddie Murray, who got the bases loaded walk, forcing in a run and giving Point Lomas the 3-2 lead. But the Friars were not done yet. McDonald was pulled, and on came Rob Dibble. Ryne Sandberg singled off Dibble, scoring 2 more runs to add to the lead. 5-3 Friars. Alejandro Pena pitched the 9th, and got consecutive flyouts from Lenny Harris, Kal Daniels, and Paul O'Neill. Point Lomas wins game 5 by a score of 5-2. Once down 0-3, the Friars have won the past 2 contests. If they won game six, they would force a decisive game seven. If the Mashers won, they would advance to the AP conference finals. The Mashers struck first. In the first. Rickey Henderson walked, and Rob Deer drove them both home with a home run. 2-0 Montreal. In the top of the 3rd, Bud Black doubled and Tim Raines walked. Von Hayes doubled, scoring a run. Mike Blowers hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at 2. In the 4th, Frank Viola ran into trouble, loading the bases with 1 out. Tim Raines singled, scoring 2 runs. 4-2 Point Lomas. Von Hayes cleared the bases with a homer. 6-2 Point Lomas, and Viola was done. Alan Trammell hit an RBI double in the 4th, but the Friars added to their lead in the 6th, when Hayes hit a home run and Boone and Schofield hit RBI singles to make the commanding 9-3 lead. It looked as if the Mashers were done. Or were they? Rickey Henderson cut into the lead in a big way in the 6th inning, smashing a 3-run shot. Lead down to 3. In the 7th, Ellis Burks swung and missed for strike 3, but the ball got past the catcher, and Burks wound up at first. Lemke doubled him in. 2 run lead. Pat Tabler hit an RBI single. 9-8 ballgame. In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Friars' Xavier Hernandez was on the mound protecting a 1 run lead. 3 outs without a score, and the Friars force game seven. Give up a run, it would go to extra innings. Give up 2 runs, and the season was over. First batter up, Kal Daniels, grounded out. Second batter, Franklin Stubbs, grounded out. 2 outs. It was now up to Ellis Burks to make something happen. Burks was issued a 2 out walk. He was replaced at first by Cecil Espy, and representing the winning run, pinch hitter Paul O'Neill, was at the plate. O'Neill singled, and Cecil Espy moved to 3rd. It was now up to Pat Tabler. Tabler, who was hitting 0.444 for the series. Tabler, who already had 2 hits, a run and a run driven in for the game. A single would tie it up. A double might just win it. Would Tabler come through? Not today. Tablier flied out to Ivan Calderon, ending the game. Point Lomas wins a close one, 9-8, and even up the series. Once down 0-3, they've won 3 straight to force a seventh and final game. Daniels hit a deep fly ball, but not deep enough, as it was caught at the track. End of the inning. In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Mashers had another chance to score. Rickey Henderson hit the ball towards Murray, but it went under his glove. Henderson was safe at first, error to the first baseman, 0 outs. But Franklin Stubbs popped out and Ellis Burks hit into an inning ending double play. Game still 5-4 in Point Lomas' favor. In the top of the 9th, Dennis Eckersley retired the batters 1-2-3. Would Point Lomas' counterpart be able to do that as well? Scott Scudder started the 9th inning for the Friars, protecting a 1-run lead. Alan Trammell hit a shallow fly out. 1 out. 2 more outs and the Friars would advance to the AP conference finals. Next batter, Carlton Fisk, walked. The tying run was at first, and representing the winning run, Mark Salas, was at the plate. A double play would end the game. But Salas walked as well. Billy Spiers replaced Fisk at 2nd as the pinch runner. Lenny Harris was at bat. Scudder was replaced by Xavier Hernandez on the mound. 2 more outs and the Friars would advance to the AP conference finals. And oh how one little swing can change everything. Harris did the unprobable, taking Hernandez's second pitch deep, straight out of the park, 3-run homer. Mashers win! With one swing, Harris changed the scope of the game and the series. Montreal wins game seven in dramatic fashion, 7-5. The Mashers advance to the AP conference finals.
