1990 CDBL Playoffs Preview Albuquerque Maul (90-72, Gehrig division pennant) vs. Concord Minutemen (89-73, GT conf wildcard) The battle for the Gehrig division pennant lasted the entire year, and this round 1 matchup will decide the victor once and for all. The Albuquerque Maul won their first ever pennant in 1990. The Maul featured the all-star double play combination of 2B Jody Reed (.282 average, 90 runs scored) and SS Shawon Dunston (.472 slugging, 20 home runs). OF Hubie Brooks hit 22 home runs with 91 RBI, and Jesse Barfield had 27 home runs. A key acquisition was 1B/OF George Brett, who hit .345 with 51 home runs in just 84 games. Starter Eric King was 12-9 with a 2.95 ERA, and Dave Stieb and John Smoltz won 15 games each. Closer Greg Olson saved 26 games with a 6-1 record and 2.05 ERA. The 1990 edition of the Concord Minutemen was dominated by a single individual: Jose Canseco. Canseco merely slugged .634, with 54 home runs, 110 runs scored, and 146 RBI. Kirby Puckett scored 109 runs, while George Bell slugged .484 with 25 home runs and 70 RBI. All 5 starters (Nolan Ryan, Zane Smith, Jose DeJesus, Jimmy Key, and Tim Belcher) sported double digits in wins, while closer Randy Myers saved 28 games and had a 2.04 ERA. Albuquerque won the season series 7 games to 3. Albuquerque has home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Minutemen (Ryan) at Maul (Stieb). This game was played about as well as you can play a game and still have someone come out the winner. The Maul scored first in the 2nd, when Sam Horn hit a solo home run. In the 7th inning, Carlos Baerga walked, Kirby Puckett doubled, and Jose Canseco hit a sacrifice fly to tie things up. The Minutemen took the lead when Dave Parker singled, scoring Puckett. 2-1 Concord. The Maul tied it up in the bottom of the 7th on a solo shot by George Brett. Concord took the lead again in the top of the 8th when Canseco singled in Baerga. 3-2 Concord. The Maul tied it up yet again in the bottom of the 8th when pinch hitter Glenn Davis homered off Ryan. 3-3. In the top of the 9th, Gregg Olson retired the side in order. Nolan Ryan continued to pitch in the bottom of the inning. George Brett flied out for out #1. Hubie Brooks gets a key hit, a triple. A deep flyout would win the game for Albuquerque. Wasn't gonna happen. Sam Horn and Travis Fryman both strike out to end regulation. Ryan and Stieb both pitched good games, but it would be up to the relievers to decide the victor in this game. Olson threw another hitless, scoreless inning in the top of the 10th. In the bottom, on came closer Randy Myers. The first batter up, Brian Harper, doubled. Up next was shortstop defensive replacement Greg Smith, who, as a defensive replacement would usually do, grounded out without advancing the runner. 1 out. Next batter, Jody Reed, singled, moving Harper to 3rd. To face the lefty Myers, the Maul trottle out Jesse Barfield. What happens? Barfield hits it deep. Not deep enough to clear the wall, but deep enough that Canseco didn't even bother to chase it down, converting the sac fly to a single, but scoring a run either way. Albuquerque wins game 1 by a score of 4-3 in extra innings. After winning game 4, the Minutemen were looking to make it 2 in a row. Albuquerque was looking to close out the series and advance to the conference finals. Carlos Baerga hit his 2nd straight 1st inning home run for the quick 1-0 Concord lead. In the 4th, Jose Canseco was plunked by a pitch, and Dave Parker got revenge with a 2-run shot. Meanwhile, Nolan Ryan was throwing a dominant performance. Other than a solo home run by Travis Fryman in the 7th, the Maul were held in check. Ryan finished the 9th with 2 K's (12 total) and a popout by Sam Horn to end the game. The Minutemen win game 5 by a score of 3-1. If Concord could win this one, they'd get to come back for another game for all of the round 1 marbles. This was also Albuquerque's 3rd chance to close out the series to advance to the conference finals. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Shawon Dunston hit a solo shot. The Minutemen responded in the 2nd with solo shots of their own from Jose Canseco and Gary Carter. 2-1 Concord. In the 3rd inning, Eric King singled, and Jody Reed hit a solo home run. 3-2 Albuquerque. Concord made their move in the top of the 6th inning. Kirby Puckett singled. Jose Canseco hit a ball towards Brooks. Rather, make that ball past Brooks. Error to the outfielder, Puckett winds up at 3rd, and Canseco at 2nd. Dave Parker grounded out, scoring Puckett. George Bell homered, giving the Minutemen a 3-run 6th inning. Luis Aquino didn't help the Maul's effort in the 7th, balking in a run to make it 6-3. Randy Myers pitched the bottom of the 9th with a 3 run lead. 3 more outs and there would be a game seven. First batter up, Travis Fryman, walked. Ron Oester and Rance Mulliniks struck out. Jody Reed was hit by a pitch to put 2 on, and the tying run, Shawon Dunston, at the plate. Dunston hit a deep fly ball, but not deep enough. Jose Canseco caught it for the final out. Concord wins game 6 by a score of 6-3, and force a seventh and final game in this round 1 series. Win or lose, somebody's season was ending today. In the bottom of the 2nd, Brian Harper and George Brett singled. Glenn Davis hit a deep flyout. Harper went to advance to third. Kirby Puckett threw to Baerga for the out, but the ball sailed over Baerga's head. Harper scored, 1-0 Maul. In the top of the 3rd, Mike Brumley doubled. Then Kirby Puckett doubled, tying the game at 1. Then Canseco doubled, giving the Minutemen the 2-1 lead. George Bell singled in a run to make it 3-1 Minutemen. In the 5th, Jose Canseco hit a solo shot. 4-1 Minutemen. The game went into the bottom of the 9th, with Concord still up 4-1. Zane Smith was still in the game. If Smith could get 3 more outs, Concord would have done the unthinkable and come back from an 0-3 series deficit. First batter up, Jesse Barfield, singled. Brian Harper hit a potential DP comebacker to the mound, but Zane Smith bobbled it. Runners safe, error to the pitcher, 0 outs. Representing the tying run at the plate, George Brett, grounded out. Barfield and Harper moved to 3rd & 2nd. Representing the tying run this time was Glenn Davis. Davis has had a long and storied career in Albuquerque, and this may very well be his last year with the team. Would this be his last at bat? Not necessarily. Davis came through in the clutch, taking Smith deep. 3-run homer, and the game was tied at 4. We would go to extra innings. Greg Olson retired Goff, Puckett and Canseco in order in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, relievers Randy Myers and Jeff Reardon gave up a couple of hits but got through the inning without allowing a run. Greg Olson pitched the 11th as well, and retired Parker, Bell and Carter in order. In the bottom of the 11th, Jeff Reardon was pitching. The first batter up was Glenn Davis.
