1990 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Montreal Mashers (Aaron division pennant, 4-3 over Friars in Rd 1) vs. Arkham Investigators (AP Conf wildcard, 4-3 over Hurdlers in Rd 1) Both teams won over 100 games during the regulator season. Both teams were heavily favored over their first round opponents. Both took their series to 7 games before prevailing. Much like the regular season, the post-season offense has been a team affair. 6 players have at least 4 RBI, and Randy Milligan leads the batters with 8 runs driven in (and a .444 average). Game one started out as a pitcher's duel. Neither side scored until the bottom of the 5th, when Kal Daniels drove in a run with a single. In the 6th, Burks and Fisk singled in 2 more runs. In the 8th, the Mashers loaded the bases and got 3 more runs on a single by Javier Ortiz and a misplayed ball by Kevin Mas. 6-0 Montreal going into the bottom of the 9th. Meanwhile, Ben McDonald was still pitching the 9th, and he was throwing a no-hitter. The first batter up, Mark Parent, flied out. 2 more outs to go. Next batter up was Lenny Dykstra. Fly out? No, double. End of the no hitter. Next batter, Bill Doran. Double. Dykstra scores, end of the shutout. Brook Jacoby walked and Kevin Maas had a base hit to load the bases with 1 out. McDonald sat down, and Rob Dibble came on to pitch. Ken Griffey Jr. popped out, and Jack Daugherty struck out to end the game. Montreal wins game 1 by a score of 6 to 1. It was another pitcher's duel early in the game. Arkham was the first team to score, in the top of the 5th inning. Tony Phillips walked, stole 2nd, moved over to 3rd on a sacrifice fly by Charlie Leibrandt, and scored on a Lenny Dykstra double. Montreal tied up the game in the bottom of the 6th. Rob Deer hit a 2 out single, and was doubled in by Bill Bathe. In the 8th, Rob Deer hit a 1 out single, and scored when Bill Bathe took Leibrandt deep. 3-1 Montreal. Bobby Witt pitched a complete game, getting flyouts from Jacoby, Daulton and Phillips in the 9th inning. Montreal wins game 2 by a score of 3-1. In the 4th, Hal Morris cut the lead to 2 with a solo shot by Hal Morris. The score would remain that way going into the bottom of the 9th. Dennis Eckersley was on in relief for the Mashers. Darren Daulton grounded out, and Randy Milligan and Shane Mack stuck out. End of game. Montreal wins game three by a score of 3-1, and are 1 win away from advancing to the CDBL world series. Montreal had been in this situation before, up 3-0 in a series with the Friars. They then dropped 3 straight and had to have some 9th inning heroics just to advance to the conference finals. Arkham was hoping that the Masher choke effect was in full force, as they would have to win 4 straight to advance to the CDBL world series. Montreal put some runs on the board in the 3rd. Alan Trammell singled, Rickey Henderson walked, and Javier Ortiz took them all home with a 3-run shot. Frank Viola was in control of his game, throwing 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Going into the bottom of the 9th, Montreal's Jeff Gray was on the mound trying to maintain the 3 run lead. First batter up, Lenny Dykstra, struck out. Next batter, Tony Phillips, singled. Gray was pulled and on came Eck. Next batter, Bill Doran, struck out. 2 outs. The Investigator's season now came down to how well Lenny Dykstra did in his at bat. Dykstra hit a blooper in front of Ellis Burks. Runner on first, and Randy Milligan was now at bat. Milligan, who was hitting .391, their best hitter for the playoffs. But the Masher pitching staff was just too much for Arkham this series. Milligan struck out to end the game. Montreal completes the 4 game sweep, and advance to the CDBL world series.
