1990 CDBL Playoffs Preview Hurdle Mills Hurdlers (92-70, Paige Division Pennant) vs. Arkham Investigators (107-55, AP Conference Wildcard) This round 1 series features two teams that were once among the elite, only to struggle for a few years but return to prominance again in 1990. The last time Arkham saw success was in 1987, when they made a world series appearance. 2 rough rebuilding years later, the retooled Investigators are back. Their runs for/runs against margin of 321 was best in the majors. Young outfielder Ken Griffey Jr hit 26 home runs with 96 runs scored and 123 RBI. Tablesetter Lenny Dykstra hit .352 with a .424 on base average and 102 runs scored. 3B Brook Jacoby drove in 113 runs. Starter Jose Rijo won 20 games, with a 3.17 ERA. Charlie Liebrandt was 19-3 with a 2.81 ERA, while Mike Harkey finished the season with 16 wins. Closer Jerry Don Gleaton was 6-2 with 16 saves and a 1.71 ERA. After winning the pennant in 1984, it was a long 6 years before the Hurdlers saw their next winning season. Which, coincidentally, also was the same span between pennants. Outfielder Lonnie Smith hit .320 with 96 runs scored. SS Tony Fernandez had 20 triples, scored 87 runs and drove in 89. Alvin Davis had a .400 on base average with 20 home runs. Starter Greg Hibbard went 17-11 with a 3.3 ERA. Brian Holman was 11-3. Closer Dave Smith saved 24 games with a 2.01 ERA. In 8 games between them this season, Arkham was 6-2 against the Hurdlers. Hurdle Mills Hurdlers has home field advantage as the pennant winner. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Investigators (Rijo) at Hurdlers (Hibbard). Crazy, crazy game. In the bottom of the 1st, Lonnie Smith hit a leadoff triple, and scored on a single by Delino DeSheilds. Craig Biggio singled, and the runners performed a double steal. A Rijo balk made it 2-0 Hurdle Mills' favor. Rick Leach capped off the inning with a 2 RBI homer. 4-0 Hurdlers after 1 inning. The Investigators responded in the top of the 2nd. The bases were loaded with 1 out, and Rijo put Arkham on the board with an RBI single. Bill Pecota hit a 2 RBI double, knocking out Hibbard. Randy Milligan hit a 2 out, 2 RBI double to give the Investigators the lead, 5-4. They expanded their lead in the 3rd with a 2-run homer by Glenn Braggs. 7-4 Arkham. In the bottom of the 5th, with 2 on, Jeff Treadway hit a single, scoring Tony Fernandez and sending Jose Rijo home for the day. 7-5 Arkham. In the 6th, with 2 on and 2 out, Brook Jacoby singled, giving the Investigators an even bigger lead, 9-5. Then something happened. It started out innocently enough in the bottom of the 6th. 2 batters on base, with Kevin Appier facing Craig Biggio. Biggio gets hit by the pitch, and takes offense. Both benches clear, and Appier and Biggio are thrown out of the game. Bill Swift comes on for the Investigators, and loads the bases with 1 out. A balk scores a runner, and makes it 9-6. Tony Fernandez hits a 2 RBI single. The lead is down to 1. Stan Javier doubled, moving Fernandez to 3rd. Edwin Nunez comes on the mound for Arkham. BJ Surhoff pops out for out #2. Up comes Hurdlers reliever Gene Harris to the plate. Easy out, right? Not in this game. Harris hits a bloop single, 2 runners score, and Hurdle Mills retakes the lead, 10-9. In the 7th inning, Bill Pecota doubled, stole 3rd, and scored on a Darren Daulton sacrifice fly. 10-10 ballgame. The Investigator bullpen would fail them in the 7th. Arkham loaded the bases with 0 outs and Atlee Hammaker on the mound. Gary Ward hit a 2 RBI single, and Surhoff a 2-RBI double to put 4 runs on the board in the inning for the Hurdlers. 14-10. In the 8th inning, Randy Milligan closed the lead to 3 with a solo shot, but that's as good as they would get. Hurdle Mills wins a real slugfest, 14-11, and take the opening game of this round 1 series. The pitchers got a lot of work in game one. How would they fare in game two? In the early innings, it was a lot like game one. In the top of the 1st, Lenny Dykstra was issued a 0 out walk, and 2 outs later, Kevin Maas hit a towering 2 run home run off Brian Holman. Hurdle Mills made it a 2-1 Arkham game in the bottom of the inning when Lonnie Smith reached on error, was sacrified over to 2nd by Treadway, and scored on a 2 out single by Gary Redus. The Investigators were not done with their run scoring, as in the top of the 2nd, Darren Daulton and Tony Phillips were issued walks, and both scored on a single by Dykstra. Bill Doran smacked a 2-run shot, and Brian Holman was done for the game. 6-1 Arkham, and the Hurdlers never recovered. The Investigators win game two by a score of 7 to 3 to even up the series. In a series so far dominated by the hitters, it would be only natural that the pitchers would have their way at some point. The game was scoreless until the 4th inning. In the bottom of the 4th, Lenny Dykstra was walked with 0 outs, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a flyout and scored on a single by Shane Mack. Mack would score later on with a Glenn Braggs 2 out single. The game would remain 2-0 Arkham until the top of the 8th. BJ Surhoff singled, and Pete Coachman was hit by a pitch. Delino DeSheilds drove the first Hurdle Mills run home with an RBI double. Alvin Davis hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to tie things up at 2. In the 9th inning, the score was still 2-2. Jerry Don Gleaton was on the mound for Arkham. The first batter up, Tony Fernandez, singled. Stan Javier walked. Pinch hitter Steve Decker flied out, sending Fernandez to 3rd. With 1 out, Surhoff struck out. With 2 outs, and runners at first and third, Gleaton pulled through, getting pinch hitter Tim Naehring to fly otu. Wayne Edwards manned the mound for Hurdle Mills in the bottom of the 9th. Daulton walked. Glenn Braggs flied out. Bill Pecota struck out. With 2 outs in the game, score tied, bottom of the 9th, up came pinch hitter Ken Griffey Jr. The young phenom had a chance to win the game for Arkham, but passed that honor to the next batter by hitting a single. The next batter was not-so- young, not-so-phenom Willie Randolph, who killed off the inning with a flyout. Both pitching staffs would get to work even more in extra innings. Hurdle Mills failed to score in the top of the inning. In the bottom of the 10th, Randy Milligan was issued a 1 out walk (his 4th of the game). Shane Mack singled, moving Milligan to 3rd. On comes Hurdler closer Dave Smith, marking his 1st appearance of the post-season. Brook Jacoby was at the plate. Jacoby hit an infield ball to Fernandez. Milligan went for home. Fernandez threw home. Biggio was able to tag Milligan out before he reached home, keeping the game tied at 2 with 2 outs. Shane Mack advanced to 3rd in all of the chaos. Up to bat was Darren Daulton. Could Daulton succeed where Randolph had failed the previous inning? Yep. Daulton hit a scorcher past DeShields, scoring Shane Mack. Arkham wins a close one, 3-2 in 10 innings, and take the lead in the series. This series just gets better and better. In the bottom of the 3rd, with Greg Swindell on the mound, Trevor Wilson and Bill Doran reached on singles. Lenny Dykstra also singled, driving in a run. Doran attempted to stretch 2nd into 3rd, but was thrown out. 1-0 Arkham. A Shane Mack run-scoring groundout and Brook Jacoby RBI single made it 3-0 Investigators after 3. In the top of the 4th inning, Hurdle Mills closed the gap. Brian Downing walked, and scored on a BJ Surhoff triple. Surhoff scored on a sac fly by Tim Naehring. 3-2 Arkham. In the bottom of the 4th, Mark Parent reached on error and Glenn Braggs walked. Trevor Wilson sacrificed them over to 2nd & 3rd. With 2 outs, Bill Doran was intentionally walked to load the bases. Up came Lenny Dykstra. But Dykstra couldn't capitalize on the situation, grounding out to have it remain a 3-2 game. The 5th saw Hurdle Mills tie it up with one swing. Lonnie Smith took Wilson deeping, tying it at 3. In the 6th inning, Hurdle Mills took the lead. Brian Downing and Gary Redus walked. Surhoff sacrificed them over to 2nd & 3rd, and Naehring drove in a run via sacrifice fly. 4-3 Hurdlers. The lead was short-lived, as in the bottom of the inning Glenn Braggs hit an RBI double to tie it up at 4 apiece. Hurdle Mills made another move in the 7th. Gary Ward singled, and Pete Coachman was hit by a pitch to put 2 runners on. The HBP was Coachman's 3rd of the series. With 1 out, Jeff Treadway singled, scoring a runner to give the Hurdlers the 5-4 lead. Wilson was done for the day. Reliever Edwin Nunez walked Downing to load the bases with 1 out. The next batter, Larry Sheets, singled, scoring 2 runs to give Hurdle Mills the 7-4 lead. Bill Pecota cut into the lead in the 8th, hitting a solo shot to make it 7-5. In the top of the 9th, BJ Surhoff padded the lead with a single, making it 8-5. Hurdlers closer Dave Smith closed out the 9th, giving up a single to Randy Milligan but no more. Hurdle Mills wins game 4 by a score of 8 to 5, and evens up the series. Yet another close game between these two contenders. In the top of the 1st, a series of singles by DeSheilds, Biggio and Fernandez scored a run. The Investigators answered in the bottom of the inning on a Doran walk, Dykstra single and Randy Milligan RBI single. 1-1 game. In the top of the 2nd, BJ Surhoff hit a triple, and scored on Greg Hibbard's sacrifice fly. Hurdle Mills takes the 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Bill Doran doubled and scored on a Randy Milligan single. 2-2 game. Arkham took the 3-2 lead when Shane Mack hit a double . Greg Hibbard singled and Lonnie Smith walked to put 2 runners on with 2 outs in the 5th. Jose Rijo faced Alvin Davis. Rijo's been having a rough post-season, and it was about to get rougher. Davis took Rijo deep. 3-run shot, and the Hurdlers took a 5-3 lead. Rijo would last 5 1/3 innings. Would Arkham simply roll over and die? Are you kidding? In the 6th inning, Mark Parent doubled, and Bill Pecota doubled in Parent. Hibbard was done, lasting 5 1/3 innings. Tony Phillips hit an RBI single to tie the game up at 5. Phillips stole 2nd, and scored on a Doran double. Arkham takes the lead, 6-5. Would Hurdle Mills now just roll over and die? What do you think? In the 8th inning, Tony Fernandez singled. When the next batter was at bat, reliever Kevin Appier tried to pick him off at 1st, but threw the ball away. Fernandez to 2nd. Appier then balked, moving Fernandez to 3rd. Larry Sheets hit an RBI single. 6-6 tie ballgame. BJ Surhoff hit yet antoher triple. Hurdle Mills takes the lead, 7-6. Delino DeSheilds doubled, scoring Surhoff. 8-6 Hurdlers. Would Arkham be able to respond? In the top of the 9th, Wayne Edwards was on the mound for Hurdle Mills. Bill Doran walked, and Lenny Dykstra singled to put 2 runners on with 0 outs. The winning run, Jack Daugherty was at the plate. He flied out, failing to advance the runners. 1 out. Shane Mack was at the plate. A single would likely tie it, a homer win it. Instead, the magic ran out. Mack hit into a game ending double play. Hurdle Mills wins yet another wild one, 8-6, and are 1 game away from advancing to the AP conference finals. It was do or die time for Arkham. Down 2-3, if they lost this game, their season would be over, and Hurdle Mills would advance to the conference finals. Win it, and they would force a decisive game seven. The Hurdlers struck first in the first. Lonnie Smith and Jeff Treadway were issued 0 out walks. Brian Downing singled to load the bases with 0 outs. Things were spiraling out of control. But, the next batter, Gary Redus, hit into a double play, putting 2 outs on the board with a runner scoring. 1-0 Hurdlers. BJ Surhoff grounded out to quickly kill the inning. Arkham responded in the top of the 2nd with a couple of solo shots by Ken Griffey Jr and Brook Jacoby. 2-1 Arkham. In the bottom of the 2nd, Gary Ward and Tony Fernandez singled. Brian Holman singled as well, scoring Ward to tie the game up at 2. In the top of the 4th, Jack Daugherty reached on error. Darren Daulton and Tony Phillips each singled, scoring Daugherty and giving Arkham the 3-2 lead. Ken Griffey Jr padded the lead in the 6th with another solo home run. 4-2 Investigators. Hurdle Mills had a chance to shorten the lead in the 8th. Gary Redus doubled, and BJ Surhoff walked. PH Coachman sacrificed the runners over to 2nd & 3rd. But, with 2 outs, Tony Fernandez grounded out, ending the inning with the game still 4-2 in Arkham's favor. Jerry Don Gleaton was pitching for Arkham in the 9th, protecting a 2 run lead. First batter up, Craig Biggio, grounded out. Stan Javier flied out. 2 outs, and Hurdle Mills was down by 2. Up next was Lonnie Smith. Perhaps in other series, Smith would strike out to end the game quietly. But not this series. Smith took Gleaton deep, closing the lead to 1. The tying run, Jeff Treadway, was now at the plate. But unfortunately for Treadway, Lonnie Smith used up the last of the magic for the Hurdlers in this game. Treadway grounded out, ending the game and giving the Investigators the 4-3 victory. In a series this grand, it would be only natural that it goes to a seventh and final game. This was it. The seventh and final game in this epic series between the Investigators and Hurdlers. The winner would advance to the conference finals. The loser would see their season come to an end. Unfortunately for Hurdle Mills, game seven was the game that the sleeping beast awoke. The Investigators exploded for 7 runs in the 1st inning. Bill Doran walked, Lenny Dykstra singled, Randy Milligan homered, Shane Mack singled, Brook Jacoby doubled, Mark Parent grounded out, scoring a run, Glenn Braggs singled, Bill Pecota doubled. Before Ojeda knew it, he was down 6-0 with only 1/3 of an inning pitched. Bill Doran had another at bat in the first, and doubled to make it 7-0. Hurdle Mills was not able to recover. Arkham wins game seven by a score of 8-2, and advance to the AP conference finals.
