Von Hayes put the Surfers on the board early, hitting a solo homer off Mike Scott in the 2nd inning. In the 3rd inning, Dunston & Reed singled. Glenn Davis singled, scoring Dunston. 1-1 ballgame. In the 4th inning, Mike Heath took Smiley deep with a solo shot, giving Albuquerque the 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Mickey Tettleton walked. Von Hayes continued his game two magic, hitting an RBI triple to tie it up at 2. Hayes would score later in the inning on a groundout by Jim Eisenreich. Surfers in the lead, 3-2. With 2 outs in the 6th inning, Marvell Wynne hit a double. Mike Heath was intentionally walked to bring Mike Scott to the plate. Normally this would result in the pitcher whiffing to end the inning, but only in the playoffs would Scott have the biggest hit of his season. Scott hit a solid double, driving in 2 runs to give the Maul the 4-3 lead. Randy Ready hit a single, and Scott tried to score from 2nd, but the catcher was waiting with the ball by the time Scott lumbered towards the plate. Albuquerque added another run in the 8th with a de los Santos RBI scoring Albert Belle. 5-3 Maul. Dennis Lamp started his 2nd inning of relief in the top of the 9th inning trying to protect a 2 run lead. Ozzie Smith singled with 0 outs. Jesse Barfield couldn't handle the return throw, and Smith wound up at 2nd as a bonus. 0 outs. Pinch hitter Mike Macfarlane grounded out, but Smith couldn't advance. 1 out. Wally Joyner grounded out, but Smith advanced to 3rd. 2 outs, Surfers down by 2. Jerry Browne hit a single, scoring Smith and clipping the Maul lead to 1. Browne was the tying run at 1st, and Gary Redus was the winning run at bat. But Redus couldn't deliver, popping out to end the game. Albuquerque wins game 2 by a score of 5-4. SERIES TIED 1-1. Ahhh, baseball. A carefully played game of opportunities, key sacrifice bunts, and a stolen base here or there. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Glenn Davis singled and moved to 2nd base on Jesse Barfield's groundout. Stan Jefferson hit a grounder to Jack Howell, who made the routine throw at first .. but it went past Joyner's glove and bounced into foul territory. Davis scored for a 1-0 Maul lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Barfield singled, and Jefferson doubled him in for a 2-0 lead. Shawon Dunston's flyout advanced Jefferson to 3rd. Chris Bosio walked. With Jody Reed at the plate, Kevin Brown balked, automatically advancing Davis home. 3-0 Maul. Chris Bosio remained on the mound in the top of the 9th, having only expended 86 pitches, and had a 3-0 lead. Jerry Browne got a leadoff single. Next batter was Gary Redus ... who made the game interesting with a 2-run homer. 3-2 ball game. Chris Bosio was done. Dennis Lamp entered the game with 0 outs. First batter of Lamp's day, Mickey Tettleton, grounded out to Dunston. Von Hayes flied out. With 2 outs and the Surfers down by 1, it was Jack Howell's chance to shine. Howell, who made the costly error in the 2nd allowing an unearned run to score. The very same unearned run that the Maul was leading by. Howell could atone for that mistake and more with one swing of the bat. Unfortunately, Howell's swing put the baseball into the waiting mitt of a Maul outfielder. Out #3. Albuquerque wins game 3 by a score of 3-2, and takes the lead in the series. MAUL LEAD 2-1. The Surfers were down 3 games to 1 in this series, and needed to win this one to continue. Both starters threw shutouts through 5 innings. In the 6th, Jerry Browne singled, moved to 2nd on a balk, and moved to 3rd on a Jack Howell infield single. The next batter at the plate, Mickey Tettleton, singled, scoring Browne. Howell tried to go to 3rd, as did the ball ... but the ball sailed past Jody Reed's mitt, and Howell scored. 2-0 Ocean Beach. In the same inning, Von Hayes and Jim Eisenreich walked, and Ozzie Smith doubled them both in. 4 runs in the 6th, 4-0 Surfers. Glenn Davis put Albuquerque on the map with a solo shot in the 7th. But that's all the Maul had in the tank today. Tettleton hit a 2-run shot and Von Hayes a solo shot in the 8th to put the game well out of reach. Ocean Beach wins game 5 by a score of 7-1, and have lived to fight another day. MAUL LEAD 3-2. The Surfers were looking to get to game seven, while the Maul had their 2nd shot at putting the Surfers away and advancing to the world series. In the first inning, with 2 outs, Glenn Davis singled. Next batter, Jesse Barfield, eeked out an infield single. Brian Harper singled. But Danny Tartabull juggled and dropped the ball, letting Davis advance to home and the rest of the runners an extra base. 1-0 Maul. The Surfers quickly tied it up in the 2nd. Von Hayes hit a solo shot. They took the lead in the 3rd on a Jack Howell homer. 2-1 Surfers. Pete Incaviglia singled in the top of the 7th with the score still 2-1 in Ocean Beach's favor. Pinch hitter Greg Briley doubled, and Incaviglia used this to try and score from first. Didn't work. Inky was thrown out at home, and the score was still 2-1. In the bottom of the 7th, Jim Eisenreich singled and stole 2nd. The next batter, in a curious move, Danny Tartabull was pulled for pinch hitter Otis Nixon. The switch worked, however, as Nixon tripled in Eisenreich. 3-1 Surfers. Nixon scored on a John Smily single. The Surfers added 2 more runs in the 8th to take a commanding 6-1 lead. An eventless 9th sealed the win for Ocean Beach. Once down 3 games to 1, the Surfers have come back to tie up the series at 3, and will play a decisive game seven on home turf. SERIES TIED 3-3. Once down 3-1, the Surfers have roared back and have made the Gehrig-Tiant conference finals a 1 game, winner take all battle on their home turf. The winner would advance to the CDBL world series, and the loser would go home. Ocean Beach's first scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Ozzie Smith singled to start things off. John Cangelosi was plunked for the second straight at bat (he had also been hit in the 1st). Rather than starting a bench-clearing brawl, he walked down to first. The Surfers got their payback, as the next batter, Jerry Browne, hit a hard ground ball down the left side. Dunston dived for it, but it screamed past into the outfield for a base hit. Smith went for home, as did the ball. There would be a play at the plate, except for the fact that the ball sailed over Harper's head. Smith scored, as did Cangelosi. 2-0 Surfers. In the 6th inning, Mickey Tettleton doubled, moved to 3rd on a Von Hayes groundout, and scored on a Danny Tartabull single. 3-0 Surfers after six. In the top of the 7th, with Glenn Davis at 2nd, Tony Armas hit an RBI single. 3-1 Surfers. Todd Worrell was on the mound in relief for Ocean Beach in the 8th inning. Pinch hitter Rob Ritchie hit a double. Jody Reed almost took Worrell deep to tie it up, but it fell short for an RBI double. 3-2 Surfers. Brian Harper walked and Pete Incaviglia hit a single to load the bases with 1 out, Maul down by 1. Glenn Davis was at the plate. Davis, a rookie for Albuquerque back in 1984, this year was probably his last as a prime time player. It was his chance to shine. But he struck out for out #2. Next up, Jesse Barfield, who had been hot in this post-season. 2 outs, bases loaded. But Worrell was much too strong, striking Barfield out to end the inning. Surfers lead, 3-2. In the top of the 9th inning, closer supreme Mark Davis was on the mound to close out the series. They needed just 3 outs to advance to their 2nd world series ever. Tony Armas started things off with a single, and was replaced by pinch runner Stan Jefferson. Shawon Dunston singled, and Jefferson moved to 3rd. 0 outs, runners on 1st and 3rd, Surfers up by 1. Pinch hitter Luis de los Santos subbed for Gregg Olson, who had pitched a shutout 8th inning. Single. Stan Jefferson scores, and the ballgame is all tied up at 3. On the same play, Shawon Dunston tries to move to 3rd from 1st, but is thrown out. Out #1. Mike Heath pinch ran for Santos. Heath tries to steal 2nd, but was thrown out. 2 straight bone-headed running attempts, and suddenly Albuquerque is 1 out away from ending the inning. Jody Reed got a 2 out walk, and Greg Briley got a 2 out single to put runners at first and second. Steve Bedrosian came on in relief. Brian Harper was at the plate. Harper, who really broke out this year with a chance to put the Maul in the lead. And it happened. Harper ripped one to right field. Base hit, and Jody Reed scored. 4-3. The Surfers would find themselves going into the bottom of the 9th needing to score one run to tie, and 2 runs to win. Dennis Lamp was on the mound for the Maul in the bottom of the 9th. Danny Tartabull was once again replaced by pinch hitter Otis Nixon. Nixon had tripled in a run and scored one of his own in game 6. But game 7 would prove differently. Nixon grounded out. Wally Joyner got the 1 out walk, and was replaced by Gary Redus as the pinch runner. Ozzie Smith grounded out, advancing Redus to 2nd. 2 outs. Mike Macfarlane was at the plate. Macfarlane, the backup catcher who had all of 8 at bats in the regular season, was now the single hope for the Surfers to advance to the world series. But Macfarlane would not deliver.
