The one game where the starters are assured they won't appear in the series again. And wouldn't you know it, it's the game 4 starters that put in the best performances of the series. Both sides were kept hitless until the bottom of the 4th inning, when Danny Heep hit a single in a scoreless inning. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Tim Raines walked, moved to 2nd on Bip Roberts' groundout, and scored from 2nd on Danny Heep's single. 1-0 Point Lomas. In the bottom of the 7th, Tim Raines hit an RBI single to make it 2-0. The game would remain that way going into the top of the 9th, with Point Lomas still holding a 2-0 lead. Marty Clary was aiming for the first complete game of the '89 playoffs. First batter up, Rickey Henderson, hit an infield single. Kal Daniels singled. 0 outs. Pedro Guerrero was next up to the plate, and hit into a double play. 2 outs, but Henderson was at 3rd and last game's hero, the tying run, Paul O'Neill was at the plate. Every game so far there was the hit of the game. Would O'Neill make it 2 in a row? Nope. O'Neill grounded out, ending the game. Marty Clary pitches a complete game shutout to even up the series with a 2-0 game four victory. SERIES TIED 2-2. Gary Pettis sparked an early Friars rally. Pettis singled, stole 2nd, and scored on Ivan Calderon's single. 1-0. Bip Roberts walked. Vet Dwight Evans hit a single, scoring Calderon. Roberts cycled around to 3rd, where O'Neill tried to throw him out. Instead, the ball sailed over Walling's head, scoring Roberts. 3-0 Point Lomas. With 2 outs, still in the 1st inning, Sandberg was intentionally walked to face Mike Gallego. Gallego hit an infield single, scoring Evans. 4-0. Higuera had the extra day's worth of rest, folks. Scott Garrelts grounded out to end the inning, but the entire Point Lomas lineup got an at bat in the 1st. In the 4th inning, Paul O'Neill put the Mashers on the board with a solo shot. 4-1. In the bottom of the 7th, Bip Roberts tripled, and scored on Dwight Evan's single. 5-1 Friars. Bill Landrum closed out the 9th with 3 straight outs. Point Lomas wins game five thanks to a 4-run first inning, and are 1 game away from advancing to the AP conference finals. To do so, they will have to win on Milwaukee's turf. FRIARS LEAD 3-2. The Mashers were in a must-win situation in game six. In the bottom of the 1st, Rickey Henderson singled, moved to 3rd on a Vance Law single, and scored on a Carmen Castillo hit. 1-0 Milwaukee. Bud Black threw a wild pitch, advancing the runners. Ellis Burks grounded out, scoring Law. Another wild pitch scored Castillo, to put Milwaukee up 3-0 after 1. Ryne Sandberg and Mike Scioscia singled in the bottom of the 2nd. Gary Pettis grounded out, advancing both runners, and Sandberg scored on Nick Esasky's sacrifice fly. 3-1 Mashers. In the 3rd inning, Bud Black singled, and while waiting at first, there was a rain delay. Black's arm stiffened up and he had to leave the game. I guess he didn't use his exercises while standing at first base in the rain. In the 5th inning, Ron Oester tripled and scored on a Tim Raines 2 out double. 3-2 Mashers. Bip Roberts walked, and a Danny heep single scored Raines. 3-3 tie ballgame. In the bottom of the 5th, Rickey Henderson singled with 0 outs. He stole second andmoved to 3rd on a Vance Law flyout, but the other teammates couldn't bring him home. Still 3-3. In the top of the 6th inning, Gary Pettis singled, moved to 3rd on a single by Esasky, and later scored on an Oester single. 4-3 Friars. The bottom of the 6th saw Tim Laudner single, bringing Alan Trammell to the plate. Trammell game through with the hit of the night, tagging reliever Willie Fraser with a 2-run shot. Milwaukee takes a 5-4 lead. Trying to protect a 1-run lead in the top of the 9th was Mashers closer Jay Howell. Ron Oester grounded out to Trammell for out #1. Pinch hitter Dwight Evans singled, putting the winning run, Tim Raines, at the plate. But Raines struck out. 2 outs. Next up was Bip Roberts, who singled. 2 on, 2 out for Danny Heep. But Heep wouldn't deliever the goods, grounding out to Trammell for the 3rd out. Milwaukee takes game 6 by a score of 5-4, and force a decisive game 7 to be held in Milwaukee. SERIES TIED 3-3. It is only fitting that an exciting series has its best game of all in game #7. The Friars scored first in the top of the 2nd, when Mike Scioscia doubled in Tim Teufel. Sandberg made it 2-0 in Point Lomas' favor with an RBI single in the same inning. In the top of the 3rd inning, Gary Pettis singled. Ivan Calderon hit into a potential double play ball, geting Pettis out, but Calderon made it to first in time. Good thing for the Friars, as 2 batters later, vet Dwight Evans hit a 2 out, 2 run homer. 4-0 Point Lomas. In the top of the 4th inning, Ryne Sandberg hit a solo shot to make it a seemingly unsurmountable 5-0 lead. And yet the Mashers would make a comeback. In the bottom of the 7th, with 2 on and 0 outs, Denny Walling put the first Mashers run on the board with an RBI single. Jeff Treadway cleared the bases with a 2 RBI single. 5-3 Friars. Alan Trammell hit a single, and tried to stretch it into a double, but was thrown out. Treadway to 3rd, 2 outs. Brad Arnsberg comes on the mound. Arnsberg hasn't had a good series, and game seven was no exception. Pinch hitter Terry Pendleton tagged him for a 2 run homer. 5-5 tie ballgame. But the Friars were not done. In the top of the 8th inning, Mike Scioscia singled and moved to 2nd in a Ryne Sandberg groundout. Scioscia scored on a clutch 2 out hit by John Moses. 6-5 Friars. In the top of the 9th, Bip Roberts walked, stole second, and scored on Dwight Evans' single. 7-5. In the bottom of the 9th, Alejandro Pena was on the mound. Game seven was Pena's first appearance in the post-season, and pitched a scoreless 8th inning. Up first was Walling, who hit a 0 out single. Next up, Jeff Treadway, singled as well. Ellis Burks singled to load the bases with 0 outs. Pinch hitter Lennis Harris hit a shallow pop out to Ivan Calderon. Walling couldn't advance to home. 1 out. Next up, Rickey Henderson. Deja vu, as Henderson hits a shallow pop out to Calderon, and Walling can't advance. 2 outs in the 9th, and the Mashers are down by 2. Their season hinged on Kal Daniels. With it all on the line, Daniels came through, hitting a clean single. Walling scores. Treadway motors around 3rd, the throw goes home, but Treadway scores before the tag can be made. 7-7 tie ballgame. Bill Landrum comes onto the mound, and issues a walk to Pedro Guerrero. Bases loaded, 2 outs for Paul O'Neill. The Mashers were looking to win, the Friars were looking to put the game into extra innings. The pendulum swung Milwaukee's way. O'Neill singled, scoring Burks from 3rd base. The Mashers win a terrific game seven by a score of 8-7 to the delight of the hometown crowd. Milwaukee advances to the AP conference finals to take on the winner of the DC Riots/Trout series. MASHERS WIN 4-3.
