1989 CDBL WORLD SERIES PREVIEW Elk Grove Trout (4-1 over Riots in rd 1, 4-0 over Mashers in AP Conf Finals) vs. Albuquerque Maul (4-0 over Bulldogs in rd 1, 4-3 over Surfers in AP Conf Finals) The lefties vs. the righties. Pitching vs hitting. Elk Grove has a pitching staff and hitting lineup stacked with left handed hitters, while the Maul is almost exclusively right handed. Elk Grove has the best team ERA. Albuquerque has scored the most runs. Both extremes have helped each team make it to their first ever world series. Elk Grove captured the league wildcard, but they bumped their game up a notch, rolling over DC and Milwaukee to advance to the world series. Their 2.09 team ERA is the best of the post-season teams. Their lone righty starter, Eric Hanson, has thrown 18 consecutive shutout innings, going 2-0 in that span. Chuck Finley has a 1.08 in 3 starts. Center fielder Tony Gwynn is having an excellent post-season, hitting .333 with 11 runs scored in 9 games. Shortstop Dickie Thon has 5 RBI and 2 home runs, and Will Clark is hitting .333 with 5 runs scored. Albuquerque mowed over Boston and took a commanding lead in the GT conference finals before succeeding Ocean Beach in 7 games. Albuquerque's 4.4 runs a game is best among post-season teams. 1B Glenn Davis and CF Jesse Barfield each ahve 7 runs scored and 7 RBI. Stan Jefferson has 4 runs and 3 RBI in just 10 at bats. Greg Briley is hitting .324 with 4 runs scored. Chris Bosio has a 2.95 ERA and a 2-0 record in 21 1/3 innings of work. Dennis Lamp has been amazing in the closer role, saving 5 post-season games with a 0.90 ERA. Albuquerque won the season series 4 to 2, and have home field advantage (due to the Maul being the GT conf wildcard, while Elk Grove is the league conf wildcard). ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Trout (Finley) at Albuquerque (Stieb). Boy did the pitchers get a beatin' in this one. In the top of the 1st, Wade Boggs singled, stole second, and scored on a Will Clark double. Geno Petralli homered off of Stieb to make it 3-0. Glenn Davis made the score 3-2 in the bottom of the 1st with a 2 run homer off Finley. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the bases were loaded with Maul batters with 1 out. Randy Ready singled, scoring Wynne and Heath. Chuck Finley was out after 1 1/3 innings. Reliever Duane Ward threw a wild pitch, scoring Stieb from 3rd. The Maul were up 5-3. The Trout came right back, tying the game in the 3rd on a Will Clark 2 run homer. 5-5. The Maul didn't let up, taking the lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Davis doubled and scored on a Jesse Barfield single. 6-5 Maul. After 3 innings. The Trout's turn at loading the bases with runners came in the 4th inning with 1 out. Dave Stieb was done, not lasting much longer than his opponent. Mike Jackson was on the mound. Tony Gwynn hit a foul popup, which was caught by Heath. Will Clark struck out to end the scoreless inning. Still 6-5 Albuquerque. Gregg Olson was on the mound for Albuquerque in the 6th. Randy Velarde and Wade Boggs were issued walks. A Will Clark groundout advanced the runners to 3rd & 2nd. Olson threw a wild pitch, scoring Velarde. 6-6 tie ballgame. With 2 outs, and runners at 1st & 3rd, the Trout took the lead when Geno Petralli singled in Boggs. 7-6 Elk Grove. The Trout added 2 runs in the 8th on a Julio Franco home run. 9-6 Trout. Dan Plesac, the 5th Trout pitcher and the only lefty reliever, was on the mound for Elk Grove in the bottom of the 9th. 2 quick outs were recorded. Randy Ready hit a 2 out grounder to Boggs, who couldn't quite come up with it. Ready reaches on error. Shawon Dunston singles, bringing the tying run, Jody Reed, at the plate. Scott Williamson came on in relief. Reed singeld to load the bases. 2 outs, bases loaded, bottom of the 9th and the winning run, Glenn Davis, was at the plate. Williamson walked in a run, and the score was 9-7. The next batter was Jesse Barfield. A hit could tie or even win it. But Williamson shut him down, striking out Barfield to end the game. Elk Grove wins game 1 in a slugfest, 9 to 7. TROUT LEAD 1-0. If game one was an all-out slugfest, this was trench warfare. In the bottom of the 1st, Randy Ready hit a 0 out double. Shawon Dunston sacrificed him over to 3rd. Jody Reed was walked, putting runners at 1st & 3rd. Glenn Davis hit a hard grounder to Wade Boggs, who juggled and dropped it. Davis was safe at first on an error, and Ready scored. 1-0 Albuquerque. Glenn Davis hit a solo shot in the 3rd inning to make it 2-0 in Albuquerque's favor. In the top of the 5th inning, with Boggs at 2nd, Julio Franco took Bosio deep, tying the game at 2. In the 6th, Dave Clark walked and Sid Fernandez hit a well placed single. Clark tried to score from 1st, but ended up getting thrown out. Game still tied at 2. The bottom of the 6th inning saw Glenn Davis and Mike Heath single, and Pete Incaviglia walked to load the bases with 2 outs. The next batter was Chris Bosio, who anti-climatically popped out to end the inning. Game still tied at 2. Jesse Barfield broke the deadlock in the 8th, hitting a solo home run off of Fernandez. The game would remain 3-2 in Albuquerque's favor going into the top of the 9th. Gregg Olson was on the mound for the Maul. Rick Cerone struck out for out #1. Wade Boggs got a base hit, and was replaced by Rolando Roomes as a pinch runner at first. An Olson wild pitch moved Roomes to 2nd. A hit would likely tie the game. But Olson struck out Tony Gwynn and Will Clark to secure the victory. Albuquerque wins game 2 by a score of 3 to 2. SERIES TIED 1-1. With the series tied at 1, the series shifted to Elk Grove for a 3 game stand. In the bottom of the 3rd, Herm Winningham walked, and starting Trout pitcher Eric Hanson singled. Wade Boggs hit a flyout to Jesse Barfield. Winningham tried to advance to 3rd on the flyout, but Barfield's gun got the ball to 3rd before Winningham. 2nd out of the inning, and the scoring opportunity was gone. In the bottom of the 5th, Ron Kittle singled. Dickie Thon singled, moving Kittle to 3rd. A passed ball scored Kittle and moved Thon to 3rd. Winningham walked again. Boggs hit into a potential inning ending double play, but made it to first in time to allow Thon to score. 2-0 Elk Grove. Dickie Thon hit a solo homer in the 7th. 3-0. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Geno Petralli hit a 3-run blast off of Mike Jackson. 6-0 Trout. With the game little in doubt, Eric Hanson was working on his 3rd straight complete game shutout. But it was not to be. With the bases loaded, 2 outs, and the score still at 6-0, Stan Jefferson hit an RBI single, ending Hanson's streak at 26 2/3 innings. Another run would score, but that was it. Elk Grove wins game 3 by a score of 6-2. TROUT LEAD 2-1. With Doug Bair relieving for Elk Grove, Jesse Barfield threw down the gauntlet early, hitting a 0-out solo home run. The Maul took the lead for the first time in the game, 3-2. Dennis Lamp would come on in the bottom of the inning, trying to protect a 1-run lead. Things did not start out well for Lamp. Gwynn hit a 0 out base hit. Will Clark hit an infield grounder to Dunston, who didn't get it to 2nd in time. Base hit. 0 outs. Next batter, Rick Cerone, singled as well. Gwynn motored around 3rd to advance home. Jesse Barfield threw the ball home. The ball sailed over Heath's head. Gwynn scored. Will Clark scored. That's the ballgame. Elk Grove scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th to take game four by a score of 4-3, and are 1 win away from their first ever CDBL championship. TROUT LEAD 3-1. If Elk Grove won this one, they would be CDBL world champs. Albuquerque was looking for a game six. In the bottom of the 1st, Randy Ready hit a leadoff single, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a Jody Reed groundout, and scored on a Glenn Davis single. Albuquerque took the early lead, 1-0. In the bottom of the 7th, with the game still 1-0 in the Maul's favor, Greg Olson was pitching in relief for Albuquerque. Dickie Thon singled, and pinch hitter Rick Cerone hit a 2 out double. Thon went for home, as did the ball. The ball got there before Thon, and he was tagged out. Still 1-0 Maul. In the bottom of the 8th inning, with Olson still on the mound, Will Clark singled and Franco doubled, moving Clark to 3rd. 1 out. Olson threw a wild pitch, scoring Clark, moving Franco to 3rd and tying things up at 1. Geno Petralli hit a sacrifice fly, giving Elk Grove the lead. Lee Mazzilli hit a solo shot, putting the Trout at 3-1, all in the 8th inning. Albuquerque would need to score at least 2 runs in the next inning for the season to continue. Duane Ward was on the mound for Elk Grove, trying to get the win and make the Trout champions. Glenn Davis was first at bat. Single. Jesse Barfield, the tying run, was at the plate. Barfield proceeded to hit into a double play, 2 outs, nobody on base. It was now up to young Joey Belle to save the Maul's season. But it was not to be. Belle grounded to Thon, who threw to Will Clark for the final out. Elk Grove wins game 5 by a score of 3 to 1, and win the series 4 games to 1. The Trout are the 1989 CDBL champions! TROUT WIN 4-1. 1989 CDBL PLAYOFF MVP: Eric Hanson, Trout, SP. Hanson was the only Trout starter to win all of his starts, and did so in dominant fashion. Hanson finished the post-season 3-0, with 2 shutouts, the other start lasting 8 2/3 innings, and giving up just 2 earned runs for a 0.67 post-season ERA.
