At the plate was Geno Petralli ... and Wegman walked him. Ron Kittle took his sweet time crossing to home, and Elk Grove won a tight one, 5 to 4. The Trout are now just 1 game away from the AP conference finals. TROUT LEAD 3-1. Meeting #2 for the aces, and DC's Mike Moore was hoping for a better performance this time around, particularly since his team was down 3-1 in the series. For most of the game, both pitchers pitched well. The first hit of the game by either team occurred in the 3rd, when Mike Moore himself singled. Through 6 innings there were only 2 hits total for both teams. The first scoring opportunity for the Riots came in the 7th. Gary Templeton hit a 1 out double. Pinch hitter Fred McGriff walked. Chris Sabo grounded to Franco, who couldn't handle the ball. Sabo reached first on an error, and the bases were loaded. Up at the plate was Mike Moore, who grounded it to Franco. Franco gets the out at home, and then doubles Moore up at 1st. The Trout got out of the inning with the score still tied at 0. All this time all hits had been from the Riots. Mike Moore was pitching a no-hitter. Until the bottom of the 8th, when Dave Clark hit a 0 out solo homer. First hit of the game for the Trout, and it put them up 1-0. The game would go to the top of the 9th, with the Trout still up 1-0. Duane Ward was in the game to protect the lead and send the Trout to the conference finals. First batter up, Damon Berryhill, struck out. One out. Next batter, Dan Gladden, singled. Gary Templeton hit a double, moving Gladden to 3rd, with 1 out. Jim Gantner grounded out, but it allowed Gladden to score, 1-1 tie ballgame. Elk Grove would get out of the inning with a tie score, but would need to score in the bottom of the 9th to avoid putting the game into extra innings. Mike Moore was still on the mound for the Riots, having only given up 1 run and 2 hits. 1-1 ballgame. Tony Gwynn grounded out for out #1. Will Clark hit a double. Julio Franco was intentionally walked. 1 out. Dennis Eckersley was brought into the game to face Geno Petralli. If the Riots were going to go down, they'd go down with the best closer on the planet. And that's how it happened. Petralli singled, scoring Clark from 2nd. Elk Grove pulls the upset of the post-season, winning game 5 by a 2-1 score, and winning the first round series against the DC Riots 4 games to 1. The Trout advance to the AP conference finals.
